RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A rare crocodile monitor lizard is in the care of Riverside County Animal Services Friday while staff members search for its owner.Christine and J. Craig Williams found the five-pound, four-foot long lizard Wednesday at their Riverside home after their dogs began to bark at it, according to a news release.Animal Services Officer John Hergenreder used a loop to capture it. “It did not try to escape when I walked up to it, but it did start to hiss loudly,” Officer Hergenreder said. “It sensed I was coming to grab it.”“Crocodile monitors are not usually kept as pets by private individuals,” said reptile expert Kim McWhorter. “They need specialized care, mostly due to the large size they can reach. An owner would need a custom-built, room-sized enclosure. We hope the owner realizes we have their pet now. People are accustomed to coming to the shelter if they lose a dog or cat, but don’t necessarily think of us when they lose a lizard.”The Riverside City/County animal shelter in Jurupa Valley will hold the exotic pet for a period to allow the rightful owner to claim his/her lizard. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Californians will vote next year whether the state should issue billion in bonds for school construction and modernization projects.Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation Monday placing the bond on the March 2020 ballot. He says improving physical conditions in schools will improve students' educational experiences.Nine billion dollars will go to facilities serving students in pre-school through 12th grade. Two billion dollars each will go to the University of California system, the California State University system and community colleges.Local governments have to provide matching funds. But the state will provide a greater share of the money for districts with high percentages of low income, foster care and English learning students.Newsom says he's confident voters will approve the bonds. 838

RIDGECREST, Calif. (KGTV) — A 4.7-magnitude earthquake hit just outside the town Southern California town of Ridgecrest late Thursday.The quake struck near area of Little Lake, Calif., about 20 miles away from Ridgecrest just after 5:40 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. USGS estimated the earthquake's depth at about 1.2 miles.The earthquake could be felt from as far away as Spring Valley, according to the USGS' "Did You Feel It?" map.Several aftershocks were recorded around the area following the 4.7 shake up. No injuries were immediately reported. On July 5, magnitude 5.4 and 7.1 quakes hit the Ridgecrest area, causing millions in damage locally. Those quakes could be felt as far away as Las Vegas. 729

(AP) — Lawmakers can avoid the long lines plaguing California's Department of Motor Vehicles offices by visiting an office near the Capitol not open to the public, a decades-old practice under fresh fire as wait times surge.The office provides services for current and retired lawmakers, their staff and some other state employees, The Sacramento Bee reported Thursday. DMV spokesman Artemio Armenta said its primary purpose is to handle constituent requests that arrive on lawmakers' desks and that the two-member staff handles 10,000 requests per year.But one lawmaker said it shouldn't provide extra perks for the Capitol community as regular Californians are forced to wait up to hours in line for services at their local office.RELATED: Shorter lines?
