BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying said Tuesday Premier Wen Jiabao's Europe trip aims to promote the two sides' comprehensive strategic relationship.Fu made the remarks at a press briefing at which she and Vice Foreign Minister Zhai Jun briefed the press about Wen's upcoming visit to Europe.Wen will pay an official visit to Greece, Belgium, Italy and Turkey from Oct. 2 to 9 at the invitations of Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.Wen will attend the eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and the 13th China-European Union (EU) summit from Oct. 4 to 6 as guest of European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.The Greece visit is the first by a Chinese premier in 24 years. During his stay, Wen will meet George Papandreou and discuss China-Greece relations. The two leaders will also witness the signing of several cooperation agreements. Wen will also deliver a speech in the Greek parliament on China-Greece relations and China-EU relations."Coping with the financial crisis will be an important topic for talks between Wen and Greek leaders. We have a positive attitude about the measures taken by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund. We have noticed that the Greek government has adopted measures which have been effective. We hope Greece will recover soon from the difficulties," Fu said.Speaking highly of the role Belgium has played in promoting China-EU relations during its rotating presidency, Fu said China-EU relations will be on the top agenda of Wen's meeting with Belgian leaders.Wen will hold talks with Yves Leterme and meet King Albert II. The two countries will also sign deals on nuclear energy.During Wen's visit to Italy, he will have talks with Silvio Berlusconi and meet President of the Italian Senate Renato Schifani, and President of the Chamber of Deputies Gianfranco Fini. Premier Wen will also attend the opening ceremony of the Chinese Culture Year."There are lots of cooperation programs between China and Italy, especially in technology, environmental protection and trade. The two countries will sign some new deals during Wen's visit and some documents to map out future cooperation," Fu said.According to Zhai, Wen will hold talks with Recep Tayyip Erdogan and meet Turkish President Abdullah Gul during his visit to Turkey from Oct. 7 to 9.He will also meet people from business circles and hold seminars with people from cultural circles."China-Turkey relations have witnessed smooth development, and the two countries cooperate fruitfully in many areas. Cooperation in such areas as investment, transportation and energy are progressing steadily. BEIJING, Sep. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said Thursday it would urge industrial enterprises to produce high-quality products as part of the effort to enhance the image of "made in China."The Ministry would also draw up a blacklist displaying the names of those firms breaching quality-related regulations, said Li Yizhong, Minister of the MIIT.The MIIT would reward those companies that have good records for producing quality products with increased policy and funding support, and punish those with poor quality-control records, said Li at a forum held in Beijing which focused on how to improve the quality and reputation of Chinese industrial products.The MIIT would also move forward on a campaign to allow enterprises to make promises on producing quality products, and work together with quality supervision authorities to incorporate the quality-based credit system of enterprises into the whole social credit system, Li said.During the forum, 156 Chinese firms signed a written proposal "promising to make quality products for the world," and called upon their peers in China to raise the quality of industrial products.

HEFEI, Sep. 4 (Xinhua) -- Innovation in Chinese enterprises is steadily increasing with more patents filed and more funds invested in research and development (R&D), the China Enterprise Confederation (CEC) said Saturday.The top 500 Chinese enterprises possessed 169,000 patents in 2010, up 13.3 percent from last year, according to a report released by the CEC.Among the top 500 companies, 41 had more than 1,000 patents, while 36 companies owned more than 200 patents for innovations, the report said.Chinese enterprises were also investing a larger share of their revenues into R&D.Each of the top 500 firms allocated, on average, 775 million yuan (113.93 million U.S. dollars) into R&D, an increase of 14.4 percent from 2009 and accounting for 1.4 percent of their total revenues, the CEC said.Of the 500 firms, 17 spent more than five percent of their revenues on R&D, while another 60 enterprises invested from five to 10 percent of their revenues into R&D, according to the report.In 2009, China filed 7,946 international patents, up 29.7 percent from 2008 and ranking fifth in the world, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

HANOI, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Monday accepted an invitation to visit China early next year, a Chinese official said.Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie extended the invitation during his talks here with Gates, Guan Youfei, a Chinese Defense Ministry official, told a press conference.Although very brief, the meeting showed that both sides attach great importance to developing military ties between the two countries, and was helpful to enhance mutual understanding and trust, he said.The tete-a-tete between the two defense chiefs was their first since bilateral military ties soured in January following Pentagon's decision to sell a 6.4-billion-dollar arms package to China's Taiwan province.While noting the setback, Guan said that ties between the two militaries have never ceased moving forward, and dialogues and exchanges under some established frameworks will continue.Beijing and Washington will hold their annual consultations on maritime security in Hawaii later this week, which will be followed by a new round of annual defense consultations in Washington, he added.The schedule has not been fixed for the Washington meeting, which is to be co-hosted by Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Ma Xiaotian and U.S. Under-Secretary of Defense Michele Flournoy, Guan said.Commenting on the on-again-off-again military ties between China and the United States, Guan stressed that the main obstacle is Washington's arms sales to Taiwan.During talks with Gates, the Chinese defense minister said it is important for the two countries to respect each other's core interests and major concerns, consolidate mutual trust and decrease suspicion and misjudgment, and properly settle differences and sensitive issues in order to keep bilateral military ties in a healthy track.

HANGZHOU, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm Meranti hit east China's Zhejiang Province at 7 p.m. Friday after leaving the neighboring province of Fujian where about 150,000 people were evacuated, said local authorities.Typhoon Meranti weakened to a tropical storm at 2 p.m. in Fujian Province, and then to a tropical depression at 8 p.m. in Zhejiang.The tropical depression was tracked as it passed through Lishui City of Zhejiang at 8 p.m., with a wind speed of 54 km per hour near its center, according to Zhejiang provincial flood control authorities.The storm is moving northeastward at 20 km per hour, and may leave Zhejiang Saturday morning or further weaken, according to the Zhejiang meteorological center.Photo taken on Sept. 10, 2010 shows high waves hitting a port in Pinghai Town of Putian, southeast China's Fujian Province, Sept. 10, 2010.
