HONOLULU (AP) — Intense turbulence struck an Air Canada flight to Australia on Thursday and sent unbuckled passengers flying into the ceiling, forcing the plane to land in Hawaii.The flight from Vancouver to Sydney encountered "un-forecasted and sudden turbulence," about two hours past Hawaii when the plane diverted to Honolulu, Air Canada spokeswoman Angela Mah said in a statement."The plane just dropped," passenger Stephanie Beam told The Associated Press. "When we hit turbulence, I woke up and looked over to make sure my kids were buckled. The next thing I knew there's just literally bodies on the ceiling of the plane."A woman behind her hit the ceiling so hard that she broke the casing of an oxygen mask, said Beam, of Colorado Springs, Colorado.Of the 37 passengers and flight crew members injured, nine had serious injuries, emergency responders said. Thirty people were taken to hospitals.Honolulu Emergency Medical Services Chief Dean Nakano said the injured ranged in age from children to the elderly. Customs agents and emergency responders met passengers at the gate at the Honolulu airport to ensure they could get medical attention quickly.Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokeswoman Shayne Enright said injuries included cuts, bumps, bruises, neck pain and back pain. More than two dozen people were taken to hospitals, she said."I watched a whole bunch of people hit the ceiling of the plane," said another passenger Alex MacDonald. "A couple of the air hostesses were bringing food out at the time, and they hit the roof as well."Passenger Luke Wheeldon told Honolulu news station KTIV about half the passengers weren't wearing seatbelts."There was no warning and then half of them, their head hit the roof all at once," he said. That is until this election.A recent research study found 7 out of 10 Latinos voters want stricter gun policy.In El Paso, Texas, a mass shooting that left 23 people dead and several injured has caused people to pay closer attention to gun policy and take a stance.On Monday, we ran into Adrian Loera at Sportsman Elite. Loera was at the gun store practicing shooting his gun at the range.“You never know when something is going to happen,” he said. “That is one of the reasons why I got my handgun license, because of the events that happened here last year.”Loera is referring to August 3, 2019, when a gunman drove hundreds of miles to an El Paso Walmart, with the sole purpose of killing Latinos.Last year's shooting changed a lot for El Paso. It robbed the community of a sense of security they once felt. Loera says he never thought about owning a gun before and now not only does he own a gun, he wants to make sure no one takes away his right to do so. His new beliefs would influence his vote this coming election.While Loera’s views on gun policy have changed, the same horrible event had quite the opposite impact on Miranda Escobar Gregory. As she stands in front of the newly erected memorial for all 23 of the victims, she recalls the paralyzing fear she felt the day of the shooting. She says the entire city was locked down for hours.“It’s not a need to have a giant machine gun or semi-automatic gun when you are just playing it safe,” said Escobar Gregory.She wants assault-style guns to be banned at the federal level and a mental health screening as part of the purchasing process. In Texas, you can buy a gun as long as you pass a criminal background check.Critics of a more restrictive purchasing process say there are other tactics that should be considered.“Another law preventing or trying to prevent law abiding citizens from getting access wouldn’t have changed the outcome of that day,” said Richard Garcia, the director of training at Sportsman Elite.Garcia says he is a proponent of decreasing all types of violence but feels as a nation, we need to get to the core issue of why these things keep on happening.“I think we should be moving towards the actual root of the problem, which does back to the individual. What can we learn from the person who did this so we can prevent something like this from happening in the future,” said Garcia.Garcia says conversations need to be had and arguments need to be worked through so that we can come to a compromise on how to best address the issue.“I know there is no such thing as a perfect compromise, but that is what the laws in the books are for,” said Garcia.Escobar Gregory says she will continue to fight for stricter gun policies and vote for those who will support her wishes. Georgia’s governor has withdrawn a request for an emergency order to block the state’s largest city from ordering people to wear masks in public or imposing other restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic while a lawsuit on the matters is pending. A spokesman for Gov. Brian Kemp announced late Monday that the Republican wanted “to continue productive, good faith negotiations” with Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and the City Council. The Republican governor argues local leaders cannot impose measures that are more or less restrictive than those in his executive orders. From millennials to baby boomers, almost everyone is affected by the opioid epidemic.While the issue touches so many people, a study done by Stericycle shows that Americans aren't as educated as they could be when it comes to disposing their leftover opioids. The study indicates that leftover opioids are proving to be a large source of this national epidemic. Sharing opioids: The study digs into people's habits when they are prescribed medications and how they usually dispose of them. It found that 74 percent of people think sharing and selling unused prescriptions is contributing to the growth of the epidemic. While a majority of Americans feel this way, the study also found that Millennials are 68 percent less likely than Baby Boomers to agree that sharing or selling their unused prescriptions is a contributing factor. Millennials also aren't concerned about sharing their leftover opioids. Compared to Baby Boomers, Millenials are more than twice as likely to share their unused prescriptions with a family member, and 33 percent more likely to have used an opioid recreationally in the last six months.Holding onto the medication:While most Americans think sharing is contributing to the problem, 30 percent admitted to keeping leftover prescriptions for future use out of a fear of an illness returning.  Collection of opioids: The study reveals that 15 percent of these people hanging onto their medication are doing so because they don't know how to dispose of them. 68 percent of people agree that having access to safe and secure disposal methods would help the epidemic, but 83 percent admit they have never participated in these available programs. While the need for programs like this is evident, the study shows that tackling a problem like this it isn't so simple.  1910
