"I'm not just running through the center or a room to try to get away."Second: Hide.Hardman says to look for a spot that might stop bullets."I position myself to where I've got that filing cabinet, that copier, something that's heavy."Hardman says never try to reason with someone already shooting. Statistics show you cannot stop him at that point."Once that active killing starts, that rationalization is out the door."Obviously, your best bet is to escape. HEALY, Alaska – The book and movie “Into the Wild” profiled Christopher McCandless, a young man who left his family to connect with nature in Alaska in the 1990s.The old bus he lived in before he died has attracted sightseers that have risked their lives to see it in a remote area. Soon, anyone will be able to see it without a dangerous hike.“Maybe not everybody would have done exactly what he did, but the fact that he did that is very attractive in the hearts of a lot of different people,” said Patrick Drunkenmiller, Director of the University of Alaska Museum of the North.Drunkenmiller says the state is far too familiar with McCandless’ story.McCandless hiked his way through the interior to live off the land. That’s when he found the bus, Fairbanks Bus 142, and used it as shelter for 114 days, according to Alaska historian Angela Linn.“That story and the resulting tragedy that he wasn’t able to make it out of there, it’s kind of one of those classic stories that we’re trying to understand on the grand Alaskan scale, of course, because this happens to a lot of people,” said Linn. “Disappearing in the Alaskan wilderness happens to a lot of people.”McCandless died after not being able to cross back through a river. He ate a poisonous plant and died in the bus after leaving a farewell letter. Decades later, people from all over the world have traveled to Alaska to find Bus 142.“So, sure, people thought let’s go check this out, unfortunately the Teklanika River was the same barrier to many of those visitors as Christopher McCandless for trying to leave,” said Drunkenmiller.“Unfortunately, two people died, lots of other people had to be rescued, because they weren’t prepared to either go across one way or come back the other way,” said Linn.With countless rescues and two deaths, the most recent one last year, the state finally decided to remove the bus in June.“A lot of people have a lot of strong feelings about DNR removing the bus from that location. They felt like it acted as a symbol of that place and that story and that feeling, that emotion that he was trying to connect with," sid Linn.“The owners of the bus, the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, said enough is enough, this is a real menace to public safety,” said Drunkenmiller.The famous bus is now at an undisclosed location. It’s in the process of making its way to its new home, the University of Alaska’s museum.While McCandless’ story can be considered a controversial, it is a storied part of Alaska’s history.“This is part of the craziness that is Alaska, this wildness of Alaska, that 20 miles off the highway, that this kind of thing can happen,” said Linn. 2673

The annual Perseid meteor shower is underway and will hit its peak this weekend.The meteor shower, so named because the meteors appear to come from the constellation Perseus, lasts for several weeks – from July 17 to Aug. 24 – but peak meteor activity will take place between about 4 p.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 12 and 4 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 13, according to NASA.During the peak, one can expect to see as many as 60 or 70 meteors per hour.Night sky conditions should be great for meteor viewing: The peak coincides perfectly with the new moon, meaning the sky will be plenty dark and meteors will be easy to spot. Most meteor showers are best after midnight. 702

GENEVA (AP) — The U.N. humanitarian office says needs for assistance have ballooned to unprecedented levels this year because of COVID-19, projecting that a staggering 235 million people will require help in 2021.This comes as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and global challenges, including conflicts, forced migration, and the impact of global warming.“The humanitarian system again proved its worth in 2020, delivering food, medicines, shelter, education, and other essentials to tens of millions of people,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres in a press release. “But the crisis is far from over. Humanitarian aid budgets face dire shortfalls as the impact of the global pandemic continues to worsen. Together, we must mobilize resources and stand in solidarity with people in their darkest hour of need.”The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA, expects a 40% increase in the number of people in need of such assistance in 2021 compared to this year.OCHA made the projections in its latest annual Global Humanitarian Overview on Tuesday, saying its hopes to reach 160 million of those people in need will cost billion.
