Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) announced that they agreed with United Airlines not to furlough any of its pilots.In a press statement, the ALPA said the agreement keeps all 13,000 pilots employed and cancels the 2,850 previously announced layoffs.The planned layoffs were to take place Thursday when the CARES Act pandemic payroll support expired, USA reported.The Cares Act provided a billion bailout to keep US airlines afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic.Lawmakers are looking to extend the program by introducing a new bill to protect workers' jobs until March 31.Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) introduced the Air Carrier Worker Support Extension Act of 2020 last week."The CARES Act successfully saved thousands of jobs that support the airline industry and provided these businesses with some breathing space after the drastic drop in air travel caused by the COVID-19 pandemic," said Wicker in a press release. "However, the market has not turned around as much as we had hoped, and additional relief is needed to prevent more than 60,000 aviation sector employees from losing their jobs beginning October 1. This legislation would extend the critical Payroll Support Program to provide support for passenger air carriers, cargo air carriers, and aviation contractors. It would also preserve our nationwide service by requiring airlines to maintain routes as a condition for receiving assistance. Maintaining a strong national air transportation system is critical for today's economy and the continued recovery."The ALPA says the deal also offers pilots over the age of 50 with 10 years of experience second round of first separation options. ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) -- The woman authorities say was shot and killed in an Alpine neighborhood Saturday has been identified. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, Melanie Benitez, 27, was shot on the 2800 block of North Victoria Drive around 2 p.m. The department also identified the suspect in the case as Paul Paraschak, 42. Deputies say Benitez and Paraschak were dating and lived together in Alpine. An area resident heard a scream and called 911 around 2 p.m. Saturday. Deputies detained Paraschak on foot about a half mile away with two hand guns, said Lt. Aaron Hernandez, the former NFL star who took his life while serving a murder sentence in prison, had chronic traumatic encephalopathy -- commonly known as CTE -- attorney Jose Baez said Thursday.Baez cited study results compiled by the Boston University CTE Center, which examined Hernandez's brain for the neurodegenerative brain disease.Hernandez played for the New England Patriots from 2010 to 2012 after a standout collegiate career at the University of Florida.According to a statement from BU, Hernandez's brain was examined by Dr. Ann McKee, director of the CTE Center. The neurodegenerative brain disease has Alzheimer's-like symptoms, including memory loss, confusion, aggression, rage and, at times, suicidal behavior. It is believed to result from repeated trauma to the head, which results in a buildup of the abnormal protein tau that clumps in the brain.The disease is categorized in four degrees, with Stage 4 being the most severe. According to McKee's analysis, Hernandez was found to have Stage 3 CTE, which is commonly associated with cognitive and memory loss, as well as behavioral changes and impaired judgment. Hernandez was found to have early degeneration of brain cells and large tears in the septum pellucidum, a central membrane of the brain.The CTE Center statement added that he had "severe deposition of tau protein in the frontal lobes of the brain" as well as a "deposition of tau protein in nerve cells around small blood vessels, a unique feature of CTE."The initial examination was confirmed by a second neuropathologist at Boston University.CTE can be diagnosed only after death. Researchers are working on ways to detect it in the living, with the hope of being able to treat it one day.Hernandez hanged himself in prison in April. He was 27."Aaron suffered from a severe case of CTE," Baez said. "Not only were the results positive, but we're told that it was the most severe case they had ever seen for someone of Aaron's age."A representative for Boston University's CTE Center did not confirm to CNN that it was the most severe case it had seen and said, "We have nothing further to add."A federal lawsuit suing the National Football League and the New England Patriots was filed Thursday by Shayanna Jenkins Hernandez, Hernandez's fiancee, on behalf of their daughter, Avielle.
