SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Police Department is preparing for the possibility of big demonstrations on and around Election Day. "We don't have any credible information to say that there's going to be civil unrest or large protests groups out on Election Day or soon thereafter on Election Day. However, we have been in contact with other cities throughout the United States. We've been in contact with our federal partners throughout the United States. We're preparing for possible unrest to occur on Election Day and afterward," said SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi.SDPD will not reveal exact staffing levels but said that officers will be ready to handle the calls. Lt. Takeuchi added that SDPD has nine stations throughout the city and it’s up to each station's captain to determine appropriate staffing levels for the election. He said that officers are mindful of concerns surrounding the ballots and the pandemic. “As humans, when you don't know your future, I think it brings out a little bit of anxiety and so I think that we are aware of that and the emotions,” Takeuchi added.Sean Eldridge, with Protect the Results, told ABC10 News his group is focused in part on preparing several upcoming rallies in San Diego and beyond.“Part of our work at Protect the Results is to encourage every American to be patient and realize that it could take days if not longer before we know the full count of this election,” said Eldridge. "We have nearly 400 pre-planned events across the country which could happen as early as the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 4, the day after Election Day, if Trump were to try to undermine the election results.”Eldridge says that participants are being encouraged to remain peaceful.Lt. Takeuchi is asking for any groups planning demonstrations to please reach out to SDPD ahead of time so that officers can ensure everyone’s safety. 1871

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The San Diego Unified School District said Wednesday that they are coordinating and organizing with student leaders for March 14th, when students from across the country are planning for a walkout. The walkout is in response to the Florida shooting.  The student-led demonstration is meant to urge lawmakers to pass stronger gun control laws.“We support student's voice,” School Board President Kevin Beiser said in news conference Wednesday. The protests are planned at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14th.  The district wants students to help plan events at all participating schools, which are mostly high schools, according to Andrew Sharp, a district spokesman. It will be up to those school communities to come up with a plan.  Sharp says, in general, the district would rather the students keep activities on campus in so-called “teach-ins” as opposed to “walk-outs but the superintendent has said, “students will not be disciplined for participation in planned peaceful demonstrations occurring at schools.” District heads will be meeting with student leaders from “Equity Coalition” on Wednesday, March 7 to hear their ideas on the protest. The district wants the events to be meaningful and respectful.  1290

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thirty-seven people were charged with drug and firearms trafficking throughout North San Diego County, according to unsealed indictments — in some case, feet away from schools.More than 100 members of the North County Regional Gang Task Force, the FBI SWAT team, and other local agencies arrested 18 of the 37 defendants Wednesday.Heroin, methamphetamine and fentanyl and firearms, including a semi-automatic pistol, revolvers, and a two AR-15 style assault rifles, were also seized during the arrests, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of California.Officials said the drugs and firearms being trafficked were stored and sold in North County, including near Libby Lake Park and several schools: Jefferson Middle School, Clair W. Burgener Academy, Mission Elementary School, San Marcos High School, and Joli Ann Leichtag Elementary School.Wednesday's arrests are part of a federal and local investigation into street gangs operating in Encinitas, San Marcos, Oceanside, Vista, Carlsbad, Escondido, and elsewhere. Many of those arrested reportedly have ties to the Mexican Mafia, officials said.In total, 27 of the 37 being charged are in custody, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of California. The remaining 10 are being sought."We have a special resolve to go after gangs that have the audacity to operate on the boundaries of our schools, where children play and learn," U.S. Attorney Adam L. Braverman said in a release. "The gangs are always on our radar, but when they endanger our most precious and vulnerable population – our children - we will act decisively."Some of the narcotics trafficked were obtained in Tijuana, Mexico, investigators said, and then brought to North County gang members via "unsanitary methods.""They repeatedly smuggled small quantities of narcotics in body cavities, via pedestrian lanes at the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa border crossings," the U.S. Attorney's Office release said.In one instance, one alleged gang member, Theresa Lapolla, was found in possession of more than 100 grams of heroin at her home, located less than 700 feet from three Oceanside schools. 2214

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier arrived in its new home port of San Diego Monday, bringing thousands of sailors and hundreds of millions of dollars in estimated annual economic impact for the region. The Navy will relocate another carrier strike group, the USS Carl Vinson, to San Diego this summer, giving the city three carriers for the first time in a decade. Each carrier has about 3,000 sailors attached to it.RELATED: USS Abraham Lincoln returns from around-the-world deploymentThe two new carriers are expected to boost San Diego’s economy by .6 billion each year, according to a 2019 study by the San Diego Military Advisory Council. The study found that each carrier generates about 0 million in annual economic impact. The USS Roosevelt left for a seven-month deployment last week.RELATED: Thousands of sailors leave for 7-month deployment on USS RooseveltAlthough the Navy will house some of the roughly 6,000 new sailors and their families in military housing, many will be looking for places to stay in San Diego’s rental market, said real estate economist Gary London.“It will tax our housing system,” he said. “The amount of people that are coming off those carrier groups that get infused into the San Diego housing market is roughly the equivalent of the number of units that we built all of last year in San Diego County.”London estimated that San Diego’s rental market is about 95 percent occupied, and said the supply of moderately priced housing is thin.“This is a supply constrained housing market, particularly on the rental side,” he said. “Whenever you’re infusing on the demand side, more people needing housing, you are in effect bidding up the rental rates for all housing in San Diego.” “It’s going to increase the rental rates in San Diego,” he said. 1820
