So last year, she and her Corgi, Luke, embarked on their retirement dreams by selling her dream home of 42 years, moving into the Waterford Terrace retirement community in La Mesa and paying rent for a one-bedroom apartment home."The numbers made sense ... was emotionally attached to the house, but ready for a change," said Tillinghast.She's not alone in her thinking. According to a new study from Moneyrates.com, the San Diego area ranks 20th best in the country when it comes to seniors 'downsizing,' defined as selling their home to rent in a smaller place. According to the study, selling a median priced home will net you 32.67 years of rent in a two-bedroom apartment. That's despite sky-high rents. LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A hospital parking lot isn’t the typical place for a family reunion, but after 69 days in the hospital, it was the perfect place for the Rael family to gather to celebrate the fact that Wanda Vigil is now going home.Wanda spend 69 days at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood battling COVID-19 — 42 of them on a ventilator.“She’s a fighter. We were told 20 days in she probably wasn’t going to make it,” brother Alan Rael said.Alan and about two dozen family members gathered in the parking lot of St. Anthony’s on Thursday as Wanda was discharged from the hospital.“It’s a beautiful thing. It’s miraculous,” sister Linda Deborah Sanchez said.Hospital workers lined the lobby in a socially distanced fashion to clap and cheer as Wanda was wheeled out. Her family was waiting outside with signs and hugs.“I am so grateful,” Wanda said.She still has a damaged vocal cord, meaning she can only whisper, and her family acknowledged that she had plenty of recovery still to go.“She still has a journey ahead of her, but she’s alive,” Sanchez said.“My heart is so happy. I’m so happy. My family has been there through thick and thin,” Wanda said.Multiple members of the Rael family were diagnosed with COVID-19, and all recovered. They wanted to send the message that though this day was a happy one, and the vaccine is now being distributed, there are still many people in the hospital fighting the virus.“It’s a serious thing. Latinos are more likely to have to stay in the hospital and are also more likely to die from coronavirus, according to experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).A number of factors contribute to a higher risk, including language barriers and not receiving important information in their native language.That's why communities across the country are focusing on finding bilingual contact tracers.Community Care of North Carolina has a team of them.“We do try to find individuals that match the community, because that's what builds the trust, and people are more willing to talk to people that are like them, and their community,” said Christina Page with Community Care of North Carolina. “So, we try really hard to try to find bilingual individuals who can go out into the community.”Not only are people in the Latino community more willing to speak to a contact tracer, it's also easier to speak about their own health.“It is hard for the community to communicate through interpreters and that is a barrier for trust. It is easy for somebody, if you are talking in your language, to connect and express how you are feeling and what are the problems that you have,” said Wendy Pascual with Community Care North Carolina.Contact tracers aren't just finding people who have been exposed to coronavirus. They're often giving people information they had not received before and also connecting families with resources that help them get food and pay for utilities.There's also need for contact tracers who speak other languages, but the biggest need is for people who speak Spanish. 1609

LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The mother of a crash victim is pleading for the driver of the car to come forward.Monica Cloyd said her son, Michael Gutierrez, was severely injured Saturday morning on Wildcat Canyon Road near the Barona Casino when the driver of the car he was in crashed into a pole.She says the car belonged to her son, a 23-year-old ironworker, but said he had been drinking so he gave his keys to his friend.RELATED: Prosecutors: Ramona driver tried to hide evidence of hit-and-run crashEarlier in the night, she said they had been at a party in La Jolla but her son’s friend ended up driving them to Barona instead of going home.They made it to the casino, but on the way back, the car crashed along Wildcat Canyon Road.Cloyd said a 16-year-old girl was also in the car and was seriously injured.RELATED: Hit-and-run victim placed on life support days before his wedding dayThe man who was driving ran from the scene, according to Cloyd. She said authorities have not been able to locate him. (KGTV) -- San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore asked the National Guard to support local law enforcement officers in keeping looters and rioters from destroying properties amid demonstrations against police brutality and racism.The City of La Mesa posted a message saying a portion of the guard would respond to the city Wednesday night.The new rules and assistance of the National Guard were requested in La Mesa after what started out as peaceful demonstrations turned violent Saturday night when several banks and vehicles were set on fire, and numerous businesses were ransacked.In a post on Twitter late Wednesday, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office announced that 200 members of the California Army National Guard are in the county following a request from Gore. "They will work alongside law enforcement providing security to critical infrastructures (public buildings, courthouses, power grids, etc.) during the protests to prevent looting & arson," the sheriff's office said. "This mutual aide will help keep our communities safe while protecting everyone's right to protest."One hundred National Guard members were deployed to La Mesa, with the other 100 assigned to other parts of the county.The news comes as cities throughout the county enforce a days-long curfew. Wednesday night, the City of La Mesa is under a curfew from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. According to the city, the rule will be in effect through June 8.
