Ten-year-old D'Mya Newton was ecstatic when she found out she'd be able to play basketball this summer."She was in the garage all day just putting up shots," said Brittney English, D'Mya's mom.However, after playing several games in mid-June in a suburb of Kansas City, she began to feel sick."Once we took her to the hospital, they gave her an IV of saline solution and Motrin," English said.Her mom said Newton has some health issues, and wanted to take her to the hospital as her fever rose.Days later, doctors told English her daughter tested positive for COVID-19.41 Action News spoke with English over Zoom as the family is in quarantine. She said she believes her daughter got the virus from the KC Premiere Basketball tournament."She was feeling fine before we attended the basketball game on Sunday," English said. "She is the one that is always cleaning her hands, washing her hands and using the hand sanitizer."The Platte County Health Department said it alerted families that had close contact with the player who tested positive. The department also said it worked with the tournament director to conduct contact tracing.The director said four teams were alerted within hours of knowing about the positive COVID-19 case.Doctors said it is dangerous when parents send their kids back to the court."They are absolutely putting their kids at risk. You have to weigh the risk versus the benefit. The benefit is up to the parent and up to the kid," said Dr. Simon Clark, an emergency physician at Overland Park Regional. "Of course they want to get back to action and sports. The risk is definitely there."A question many parents have is if they should let their kids play or keep them at home."I can't really advise whether or not it's a good idea. I think the risk is there. I kind of have to defer to the local health department's experts. I can just say the risk is there," Clark said.D'Mya's mom wants parents to take extra precautions when letting kids go back to playing their favorite sport."Just looking at the signs when they come home. If they are tired, if they are fatigued or anything like that, just be aware," English said.D'Mya lives in Wyandotte County, Kansas. The health department there said it was also taking community precautions."I can tell you that public health officials have conducted contact tracing with any close contacts of the person who initially developed symptoms and tested positive, and have been in touch with the team directors/coaches to advise their players on self-quarantine procedures and monitoring for symptoms," said Janell Friesen, spokesperson for the Wyandotte County Health Department.Several health departments around the area said they are not seeing COVID-19 outbreaks in children from playing sports.In Johnson County, a few Shawnee Mission East athletes tested positive for the virus last week.A spokesperson with the school said they have no information that would indicate that their diagnoses were related to playing sports at the school.KC Premiere has listed the precautions being taken due to COVID-19 on its website.This story originally reported by Jordan Betts on kshb.com. 3158

Texas Democratic Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke said at a CNN town hall Thursday night that he would still vote to impeach President Donald Trump.The El Paso congressman challenging Sen. Ted Cruz said that his position on impeachment hadn't changed, even as Cruz has used the issue to galvanize conservative voters against O'Rourke's campaign.Asked by CNN's Dana Bash if he had changed his mind after saying he'd vote to impeach Trump this summer, O'Rourke said, "I haven't."He pointed to the ongoing probe into whether Trump's 2016 campaign colluded with Russia."There may be an open question as to whether the President, then the candidate, sought to collude with the Russian government in 2016," O'Rourke said. I'm at the Starbucks at 18th and Spruce," a Starbucks employee told police last Thursday shortly after 4:30 p.m.The brief 911 call was among recordings released Tuesday by the Philadelphia Police. Authorities also released dispatch and officer communications.The men had initially asked to use the restroom inside the Starbucks but were told the cafe's bathrooms were for customers only. They then sat at a table without making a purchase, which many observers have noted is a common occurrence at the franchise's locations.A manager called police after the men declined to leave the premises because, they said, they were waiting for an acquaintance.The men were arrested for trespassing but no charges were filed.The incident led to protests at the Rittenhouse Square location, including one that briefly shut the location down, and criticism of the mammoth coffee chain. TEMPE, Ariz. — An Arizona woman said a man posing as a Lyft driver tried luring her into his car. Around 9 p.m. Saturday, Bradie Trippi was waiting to be picked up in a parking lot in Tempe, Arizona. The Lyft app showed her driver was a minute away when a man in a gold Infiniti sedan pulled up next to her, she said. “He says, ‘I’m your Lyft’ and then took a phone, flashed it in my face,” Trippi told KNXV. She said the man showed her the passenger app — not the driver app — and the letter “f” of the “Lyft” emblem on his car was backward. Given the fact the man did not match the photo of her driver or description of her driver’s car, Trippi declined to get in the car. “He got aggressive,” she said. “Told me to get in the car, he’s gonna kill me, called me the ‘b word’, started yelling the ‘f word’ at me — I got kind of scared.”When her actual Lyft driver arrived, Trippi said the man sped off. Lyft and Uber spokespeople told KNXV that passengers should always check to make sure the photo of their driver, description of the vehicle and license plate match up before getting inside. Passengers should ask open-ended questions to their driver, like “who are you here to pick up?” Instead of “Are you here to pick up [name]?”Trippi and her actual Lyft driver described the imposter driver as a bald, African-American man with an accent. Starbucks opened the first of its fancy new Reserve stores Tuesday, as it continues battle competition from upscale coffee brands like Blue Bottle and Intelligentsia.The company said the store, which debuted inside its Seattle headquarters, is the first of 1,000 planned Reserve stores.Starbucks described the store concept as "an open, marketplace style" with a Princi bakery counter, a full liquor bar and a Reserve coffee bar, with tables, lounge areas and two fireplaces."Our Reserve store takes the best of coffee craft as well as artisan baking and layers in a marketplace-style customer experience creating a space that has both energy and moments of intimacy," said Liz Muller, senior vice president of Creative, Global Design & Innovation at Starbucks, in a statement.The company said the new products at the Seattle Reserve store include the Nitro Draft Latte, Spiced Ginger Cold Brew and an espresso drink called Bianco Mocha.Starbucks said that its Reserve rollout, which has been in the works since 2016, will also include 20 to 30 new Roasteries, with locations planned for Milan and New York this year, and in Tokyo and Chicago next year. The company said that some of the new Reserve stores will be converted from existing Starbucks stores.The company said it already has dozens of Reserve bars open in existing Starbucks locations.
