It seems Americans are returning to air travel, despite another spike in coronavirus cases in the United States.The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) says it screened more than 1 million passengers Sunday, the highest number of travelers screened at the agency's checkpoints since March 17, around the time the pandemic hit the U.S.The weekly volume of screenings was also the highest it’s been since the onslaught of the coronavirus, with about 6.1 million passengers screened nationwide last week.The number of fliers remains well below pre-pandemic levels, but TSA says the 1 million single-day passenger volume is a noteworthy development that follows significant TSA checkpoint modifications in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.The agency says it has been deploying acrylic barriers and technologies that reduce or eliminate physical contact between passengers and TSA officers.New credential authentication devices are also being installed at various airport checkpoints, enabling passengers to insert their ID directly into a card reader, eliminating the need for a TSA screening officer to touch the ID.Additionally, many checkpoints now feature computed tomography (CT) scanners, allowing TSA officers to manipulate an image on screen to get a better view of a bag’s contents.“This technology often enables officers to clear items without having to open a carry-on bag,” TSA said. “The new CT scanner further reduces the need for a passenger to remove contents of their bag during the screening process.”TSA has established a “Stay Healthy. It's no secret that smoking and secondhand smoke are not good for your health. But a new study shows just how detrimental secondhand smoke is for children. "In past studies, we found up to nearly one-in-two children who come to the pediatric emergency department are exposed to tobacco smoke," said Dr. Ashley Merianos, an associate professor in the School of Human Services at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Merianos led the study, comparing 380 children living with a tobacco smoker with 1,140 children who are not. The ethnically diverse study found that the children exposed to secondhand smoke at home were more likely to be hospitalized."We also found that the children who had been exposed had increased respiratory-related procedures, increased diagnostic testing. So, for example, being tested for the flu and laboratory testing, as well as radiologic testing, including x-rays of the chest and lateral airways," said Dr. Merianos.The children who were exposed to secondhand smoke were also more likely to be prescribed medications like steroids or inhalers. "Our findings highlight the need to universally screen for tobacco smoke exposure during every pediatric healthcare visit and provide interventions to reduce and prevent exposure among patients and their families," said Dr. Merianos.Dr. Merianos says intervention is key since hospital emergency departments mostly treat underserved patients with high tobacco use and limited access to information about quitting."I think right now, with the COVID-19 pandemic, there has never been a better time to quit. And the reason I say that is we know that there is emerging evidence that both smoking and vaping make it more likely that you have COVID and more severe COVID symptoms," said Dr. Susan Walley, the Chair of American Academy of Pediatric's section on Nicotine and Tobacco Prevention and Treatment. Dr. Walley says she's not surprised by the results of the University of Cincinnati's study, adding that secondhand smoke exposure has short-and-long-term health effects on children."Children who have secondhand smoke exposure are more likely to have ear infections, pneumonia, asthma and if they have asthma, more likely to have more severe asthma attacks like we see in this study," said Dr. Walley.Dr. Walley says children exposed to tobacco smoking parents or older siblings are also more likely to smoke themselves as they get older. In the 2020 general election, President-elect Joe Biden beat out a number of formidable candidates to earn the highest office in the land, including President Donald Trump, Libertarian nominee Jo Jorgensen and Santa Claus.Yes, even ol' Kris Kringle received at least one vote for president in 2020, according to the Vermont Secretary of State's website.Every state has its own rules for conducting write-in candidates. In fact, according to Ballotpedia, most states will only accept votes for certain pre-approved write-in candidates.Ballotpedia reports that only eight states — Alabama, Delaware, Iowa, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, and Wyoming — will count the write-in votes for any write-in candidate. And of those states, it appears only Vermont publishes the name of every write-in candidate on its election results webpage.Write-in candidates received 1,942 votes for president in Vermont in the 2020 presidential election. That's compared to the 242,820 that Biden received in carrying the state. It's also more than the 1,269 that independent candidate Kanye West received, despite being listed on the ballot.Among write-in candidates, Sen. Bernie Sanders received the most with 619. That's not exactly a surprise — the left-wing, progressive senator calls the state home and is currently in the midst of his third term as one of the state's senators.Other top vote-getters included moderate Republicans like Sen.
