Acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner John Sanders is resigning, he said in a message sent to agency employees Tuesday, amid the dramatic increase in the number of undocumented migrants crossing the border and a fight over how to address it."Although I will leave it to you to determine whether I was successful, I can unequivocally say that helping support the amazing men and women of CBP has been the most fulfilling and satisfying opportunity of my career," Sander writes. To this day, I get choked up when speaking about it and I can't adequately express my thanks. As a result, let me simply say I will never stop defending the people and the mission for which 427 people gave their lives in the line of duty in defending. Hold your heads high with the honor and distinction that you so richly deserve.Throughout our journey together, your determination and can-do attitude made the real difference. A single, small slug has been blamed for a massive power failure that brought part of Japan's high-speed rail network to a standstill last month.An estimated 12,000 passengers were delayed on May 30, after power was cut on lines operated by rail company JR Kitakyushu, in the country's southern Kyushu region.The outage occurred during peak commuter time, at 9.40 a.m, forcing the company to cancel a total of 26 trains.Japan is famous for its large network of efficient high-speed trains, which run the length of the country and carry thousands of passengers every day.During a later inspection of the network's electrical equipment, the company's engineers discovered a dead slug, measuring about 2 to 3 centimeters (0.7 to 1.1 inches) long.According to a company spokesman, the slug had burned to death after touching an electrical cable leading to the mass power failure.Although it was discovered on May 30, shortly after the outage, the reason for the disruption wasn't revealed for more than a month.Local media first reported the unusual cause of the transport chaos on June 22.A JR Kyushu spokesman told CNN that the slug had got in through a gap in the power box."We have not heard of power outages caused by slugs in recent years," a spokesman said Monday."If we find such a gap when inspecting equipment (in the future), we will fix them." 1363

A Spanish man spent his summer vacation paddling his way from the west coast of the U.S. across the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii.It took Antonio de la Rosa 76 days to paddle some 2,500 miles while standing on a submarine-shaped craft. He had planned to make the trip in 70 days, but suspects he drifted too far north at one point during his journey.He celebrated his 50th birthday at sea and arrived Saturday in Honolulu.de la Rosa said Monday that he's feeling a bit tired.He paddled eight-to-10 hours daily and slept every night. But he was always tired because he woke up hourly to check on his gear.In addition to a sleeping cabin, de la Rosa's boat included computers and GPS systems that ran on solar energy created by panels on the roof. However, the boat was only moved by wind, ocean currents and de la Rosa himself.He believes no one has ever done what he accomplished.In Spain, he runs an adventure tourism business and says he enjoys adventurous vacations. 976
