SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police arrested a domestic violence suspect Friday morning after a standoff in La Mesa that temporarily blocked access to parts of Grossmont Center. The La Mesa and San Diego police departments responded to the situation at Grossmont Center Drive and Center Drive just before 8 a.m. Both streets were closed as officers worked to detain the suspect, La Mesa Police reported in a tweet.The situation started Thursday night when police received a call from the victim, saying she was choked by her ex-boyfriend at a residence on the 6800 block of Hyde Park Drive, San Diego police said.Police responded about 7:20 p.m. but the suspect already had fled in the girlfriend's car. Officers took a crime report and the victim was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital in Kearny Mesa as a precautionary measure.The suspect returned to the residence this morning and the victim called the police again, according to SDPD. The suspect then drove to Grossmont Center, where police found him around 7:30 a.m. The suspect was arrested at 8:19 a.m. and taken into custody.The streets in the area were reopened around 8:30 a.m., SDPD said. 1145

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego's Old Globe Theatre will present its 15th annual Globe Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony virtually on its website and social media channels at 6 p.m. tonight to kick off the holiday season.The ceremony will feature songs, videos, and special hellos from some of the theater's favorite company members from the past 22 years, James Vasquez, director of the theater's production of ``"Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas." The Grinch himself will present the final countdown to the lighting of the tree.Designed by Grinch scenic designer John Lee Beatty, the tree will be located in the center of the Globe's Copley Plaza and will remain through December 31. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County health officials have reported 2,490 new COVID-19 infections and 14 new deaths, marking 104,958 total cases and 1,151 total deaths.Saturday marked the fourth consecutive day that more than 2,000 new cases were reported, with 2,867 cases -- a record -- reported Friday, 2,050 reported Thursday and 2,104 Wednesday. It is also the 12th day with more than 1,000 new cases. It is just the sixth time the daily cases have crossed 2,000 -- all of which have come in the past week.Of 27,599 tests reported Saturday, 9% returned positive.The number of hospitalizations continued to rise, with 38 people hospitalized and four patients put in intensive care units. The COVID-19- related hospitalizations increased to 965 -- 249 in ICUs. Since the pandemic began, 5,064 or 4.9% of cases have been hospitalized due to coronavirus, 1,098, or 1.1% have been sent to the ICU.The county's hospitals have 16% of their ICU beds available, down from 21% Thursday. The state now estimates the ICU bed availability in the 11- county Southern California region at 6.2%, down from 7.7% on Thursday.Of the 4,627 people hospitalized in the county, 20% are due to COVID- 19, and 44% of ICU patients. This compares to 7.7% and 20%, respectively, one month ago.The county has seen a 199% increase in COVID-19 related hospitalizations in the past 30 days and a 148% increase in ICU patients in the same time frame. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - One person was killed today in a fiery collision near Fairbanks Ranch Country Club.The crash, which involved a big rig and another vehicle, happened at about 12:30 p.m. in the 14900 block of San Dieguito Road in the North City area, according to San Diego police.The accident forced a closure of the roadway in the area to allow for investigation and cleanup, SDPD public affairs Sgt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Association of Governments and Caltrans will begin three nights of overnight closures of northbound Interstate 5 Tuesday night after completing overnight work along southbound I-5 ahead of schedule. Work crews will close northbound I-5 from state Route 52 to Genesee Avenue from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night though Thursday, according to SANDAG. The closures are necessary to remove wooden structures that supported the recently completed construction of a trolley overpass at Voigt Drive Neither agency expected to begin closures of northbound I-5 until later this month or early July due to similar work on a trolley overpass spanning southbound I-5 at Nobel Drive, which began June 9. Those closures were expected to last until June 28 but concluded early last Tuesday morning. SANDAG expects to conduct additional closures of northbound I-5 June 23-27. The closures are part of the .17 billion Mid-Coast Trolley Blue Line Extension, which includes a planned 11-mile extension of trolley service by San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System from Santa Fe Depot in downtown San Diego to University City. The extension will add trolley stops in Mission Bay Park, UC San Diego and Westfield UTC. SANDAG is receiving .04 billion in funding from the Federal Transit Administration to complete the project. The extension and related projects are intended to reduce traffic congestion as the county's population increases. Construction on the extension began in 2016 and is scheduled to be completed in 2021. 1548
