WASHINGTON (AP) — More police officers have died in the line of duty this year in the United States than in 2017, according to data released Thursday. Most were killed by gunfire, and vehicular accidents claimed nearly as many officers' lives.The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund said in a report that 144 federal, state and local officers have died so far in 2018. That figure represents roughly a 12 percent increase from the 129 who died in 2017.The majority of the officers who died were either shot — 52 this year, up from 46 in 2017 — or fatally injured in car or motorcycle crashes, which accounted for 50 deaths. Other fatalities involved heart attacks, strokes, drownings and cancer and other illnesses among those who responded to the 9/11 World Trade Center attack.Of the officers who were shot, eight were killed during investigative activity and six were killed while responding to calls of a domestic or public disturbance, according to the report. Two were shot while serving warrants, two died while handling or transporting prisoners and two others were inadvertently shot by other officers.Craig Floyd, the fund's chief executive officer, called the increase in deaths disappointing after a decline in 2017."Sadly this reminds us that public safety is a dangerous job and can come at a very steep price," Floyd said in a statement. "We must never take the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers for granted, and we must remember the families of the fallen who are left behind."Of the officers who died in traffic-related incidents, 32 were killed in crashes involving another vehicle and 14 were struck while outside their vehicle. An additional four were killed in a motorcycle accident.The officers who died in 2018 include a sheriff's deputy in Sacramento County, California, killed in a shootout at an auto parts store; a Greensboro, North Carolina, police officer killed in a car crash while responding to a call for a robbery; and a Greene County, Missouri, sheriff's deputy who drowned when his car was swept away by water.The states that experienced the highest number of officer fatalities were Texas, California, Florida and New York, where eight died. 2214

The Trump administration had tried to block the release because of concerns that classified information could be exposed. (KGTV)—  Hundreds of volunteers and voters attended the “Moms Demand Action” Rally in Vista.They gathered, rallied, and went door to door, advocating for what they call, “common sense gun legislation.” They featured a special guest speaker, Fred Guttenberg, who lost his daughter to an active shooter in Parkland, Florida this February. With only two days left until the deadline of voter registration, volunteers are ramping up their last-minute pushes. 10News followed a few volunteers on their door knocking routes in Vista. They said every step they took was to garner every vote for their cause. “We need to vote like our lives depend on it, because they do,” Wendy Wheatcroft, California Chapter Leader of “Moms Demand Action,” said. It’s something Fred Guttenberg knows all too well. “My daughter was… my life… she’s gone,” he said. His daughter, Jaime Guttenberg, was 14 years old when she was killed at Stoneman Douglas High School. “When you live through what we’ve lived through, it ain’t easy,” Guttenberg said.Guttenberg said since his daughter’s death in February, his life mission has changed. It is now to get people around the country to the polls, and advocate for what he calls “common sense gun legislation.”“I support the 2nd Amendment,” Gutenberg said. “My father-in-law owns guns. I have no problem with legal gun owners. It is an effort to keep weapons out of the hands who intend to kill others.”That is the message he hopes will resonate with voters across the aisle.“I am here today for one reason. VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — A Vista bike shop owner is fed up after his shop was broken into for the third time in six months.Early Sunday morning, Jesse McCormack got a call from his security company. The person on the phone notified him that thieves had gotten into his shop, 211 Bikes, again.“I woke up in an immediate panic,” McCormack said.This month, he was supposed to be celebrating his one year anniversary at the location. Instead, he is filing yet another police report.The surveillance video shows a man wearing a hoodie and shorts ransacking the shop, snipping cable locks, and running out.The man captured on the security video took a 2017 MASI Volare worth ,199, a MASI Vivo Uno worth ,999, a Haro Shredder 12" worth 0, a rack of sunglasses worth ,000, and several important files.The first time 211 Bikes was the target of a crime was last October, just six months after opening. No one was arrested for the crime. “It was a wake-up call,” McCormack recalled.The second break-in was on December 10, 2017. Five rare road bikes, along with other equipment, were stolen. “There’s some nights that I don’t really want to go home,” McCormack sighed. “I just feel like I need to stay the night here, and just keep an eye on things.”In the last six months, McCormack has lost at least ,000. He and his landlord have put up new security cameras, LED lights, locked up the bikes, even changed the dead bolts.When one of the stolen bikes was listed on online sale app, he even worked with detectives to arrest the seller. But the thefts continued.McCormack recently got a call from another bike shop owner. They sent McCormack a photo of a man, riding a rare and expensive road bike in San Marcos —The exact one that was stolen from his shop in December.He immediately noticed that the leg tattoo on this rider was very similar, if not a match, to the tattoos on the man captured on Sunday morning’s surveillance video.“He matches the description I have of the prior incident,” McCormack said.This could be a break, he said, hoping that somebody recognizes the man, and turns him into the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.“Action needs to be taken,” McCormack said. “We need to have the ability to feel safe, in order to conduct business, especially as a small and vulnerable business owner, who is operating on a shoe string budget."McCormack is now working with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, asking for increased patrols in the area.He thought about changing locations. But because the area is surrounded by great bike trails, and he services so many local loyal customers, he said moving is not an option.  2698

(KGTV) — Jurors have reached a verdict in the trial of a documented Escondido gang member accused of killing a passing motorist while attempting to shoot rival gang members.Dionicio Torrez Jr., 25, was charged with murder in connection with the death of 55-year-old Catherine Kennedy.Friday, jurors found Torrez Jr. guilty of first-degree murder with a special-circumstance gang allegation, attempted murder, and shooting at an occupied vehicle.
