A teenage worker at a Chili's restaurant in Baton Rouge says she was attacked by a large group of women while trying to enforce COVID-19 restaurant guidelines.According to WAFB, 17-year-old Kelsy Wallace was working her hostess position at the Chili's on Constitution Avenue when she was attacked by a group of 11 or more women on Sunday, August 9.The women had apparently become irate after requesting to be sat together. Wallace said that restaurant policy only allows for groups of up to six to sit together.Wallace tells WAFB that she got the manager to deal with the women when an exchange of words between Wallace and the women led to an altercation.One woman, according to Wallace, took a wet floor sign and struck her near her eye.Officers were called to the scene but the women had left by the time they arrived.Wallace was taken to the hospital to get stitches for her eye. During the altercation, some of her hair was pulled out and nails broke. A mild winter could be in store for much of the United States, according to the seasonal forecast released Thursday by NOAA.States from the Pacific Northwest through the Northern Plains and into the Northeast are likely to see above-average temperatures, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center reported.No parts of the country are due to see a colder-than-normal winter.Meantime, drier-than-average conditions are expected for the Great Lakes and portions of the Northern Rockies and the Northern Plains.Those factors could mean less snow from the Mountain West to the Midwest, where lake-effect-snow season is right around the corner.Even so, it's no time to ditch the shovels and heavy winter jackets, with NOAA warning that its forecast does not mean the winter of 2018-2019 will not feature major snowstorms."Even during a warmer-than-average winter, periods of cold temperatures and snowfall are still likely to occur," the agency stated in its outlook. 1007

A Massachusetts school district is waiting to see how many students test positive for the novel coronavirus after one student came to school after testing positive for the virus. Almost 30 teens had to go into quarantine. The student in question reportedly got the positive test results on Friday, Sept. 11, and still went to school the following Monday.Are there legal ramifications to knowingly going out in public spaces while infected with COVID-19?Mike Lawlor, an associate professor of criminal justice at the University of New Haven, says there are two types of law that could be at play: criminal law and civil law.If someone gets infected and you can trace it back to a specific exposure where the person knew they had COVID-19, then that would be a case of reckless endangerment."Almost every state has a law like this. On top of that, if you can show that people intentionally did this and it’s certainly conceivable that someone intentionally tried to expose people to the virus-- if you can show that they actually got the virus-- then that would be an assault," explained Lawlor.But Lawlor says whether criminally prosecuting is a good idea or not is debatable. What is more likely is a civil case in the form of negligence or willful misconduct."This does have a cost when you do it, right? There’s an emergency cleaning operation that has to take place. These other students have to be provided for in distance learning. And if anyone were to be able to demonstrate they were exposed and became positive, the health consequences of that could be very significant," said Lawlor.He says, either way, both the student and the parents run the risk of criminal prosecution. 1692

A Middle Tennessee woman visiting Gatlinburg with her family got quite a surprise when she found a bear outside their hotel.  Kim Vastola, of Watertown was in Gatlinburg for her son’s baseball tournament and was staying on the first floor of a Quality Inn.Vastola was startled when she heard people yelling about a bear. She went outside and captured video of the bear on a tree behind the hotel before he made his way around the building.  Vastola said the person at the front desk told her the "town bear" – named Robert – was lurking around but there was no need to be alarmed.Apparently, “Robert” lives in the area and roams when he comes out of hibernation. A significant earthquake shook the Los Angeles area Thursday afternoon, the US Geological Survey reports.Initial readings by the USGS report that the 5.3 magnitude quake struck about 60 miles off the Santa Monica coast near Santa Cruz island.There are currently no reports of any damage or injuries.
