BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- The government has cut back on import taxes on spare parts of large equipment and canceled the import tariff exemption on some complete sets.     The adjustments were made to support the domestic manufacturing of large equipment, said the Ministry of Finance.     Taxes levied on domestic enterprises for importing key spare parts of large equipment, including ultra- and extra-high voltage transmission equipment and transformers, large petro-chemical equipment and large coal-chemical equipment, would be refunded and injected into the enterprises as investment from the nation, it said.     The policy applied to imports after Jan. 1, 2008, depending on the date of declaration of imports.     In the meantime, the import of some complete sets of equipment by enterprises approved after Sept. 1, 2008 would no longer enjoy the tax exemption. Both domestic and foreign-funded projects are subject to the new policy, the ministry said.     Imports of such equipment by enterprises approved before Sept. 1 would continue to enjoy the previous tax policies until March 1,2009.

NANNING, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here Sunday that China's financial institutions have generally increased their strength, profitability and risk-resisting ability, and the financial system as a whole is sound and safe in face of the international financial crisis.     Wen made the remarks during an inspection tour to Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southwest China. As a result, the country's economy has maintained its momentum of smooth and rapid development, Wen said.     Generally speaking, China's economic foundations have not changed and the economy is developing towards the preset macro control targets, said the Premier.     "We have full confidence in China's economic development and financial stability," Wen said, stressing that the most important thing is to do our own business well, maintain the stability of the economy and the financial and capital markets.     "It is the biggest contribution to the world when a big country with a population of 1.3 billion is able to maintain a lasting, smooth and fast economic development," he said.     On Saturday and Sunday, Wen inspected villages and factories in the cities of Beihai, Qinzhou and Fangchenggang, and talked with local people of different nationalities and from all walks of life.     He said that the development of Beibu Gulf should focus on technological innovation and environmental protection to build into an important zone for international and regional economic cooperation.     In Gaosha Village of Qinzhou, Wen inspected rice paddy and visited farmers' homes. BEIJING, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China's Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) urged local governments to strengthen flood control at a meeting here on Thursday.     Water resources authorities should double check the preparation work for the incoming flood season, strengthen monitoring systems and ensure the safety of major rivers and large- and medium-sized reservoirs, it said.     It also asked relevant authorities in quake zones to pay special attention to flood control and protect earthquake victims from fresh dangers.     Flood control precautions and safe water supplies in cities holding competitions for the 2008 Olympic Games in August should be ensured. It added that drought prevention work should also be listed on the agenda.     The SFDH initiated a level-three emergency response to the torrential rains that hit China over the past week causing 57 deaths.

BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday visited hospitals, communities and supermarkets in Beijing to see for himself the infants sickened by tainted milk powder and the milk market. His first stop was Beijing Children's Hospital, where many parents had brought their children for kidney tests.     Outside the consulting room, ultrasonic scan room and medical wards, Wen asked parents and children how they were faring. He was please to hear she was in good health. None of those companies with no professional ethnics or social morals will be let off," Wen said to applause.     Later, Wen went to a supermarket and checked the milk products.     "We should check every batch of the milk powder and other milk products, and mark them so buyers can be assured of their quality."     More than 6,200 infants had developed kidney stones and four infants have died after drinking baby formula tainted with melamine, a chemical illegally added to give false protein readings in tests.
