BOSTONIA (CNS) - A 29-year-old woman was killed in a two-car collision in a neighborhood just north of El Cajon Friday, authorities reported.The woman was making a left turn from northbound Peerless Drive onto westbound Pepper Drive in the Bostonia area when her 2000 Chevrolet Malibu was struck broadside by an eastbound 2003 Volkswagen Passat shortly before 7:30 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.Medics took the mortally injured El Cajon resident to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, CHP public affairs Officer Travis Garrow said.Her name was withheld pending family notification.The driver of the Volkswagen, a 22-year-old El Cajon man, suffered minor injuries in the crash, Garrow said.Investigators were attempting to determine which driver was at fault. 805

(AP) - A man who police say was run over with a lawn mower while trying to kill his son with a chainsaw has had to have his leg amputated.The Bristol Herald Courier reports that a warrant for 76-year-old Douglas Ferguson couldn't be served until Tuesday because of the severity of his injuries.According to a Sullivan County Sheriff's Office release, officers called to a home June 28 found Ferguson bleeding from his leg and head. A preliminary investigation indicated he had tried to attack his son with a running chainsaw while he son mowed the yard.Detectives say the father and son had an ongoing feud.Ferguson is charged with attempted second-degree murder and violating probation. BARNEGAT LIGHTHOUSE STATE PARK, N.J. — A dead whale is sitting on a New Jersey state park beach after a Christmas storm blew through the northeast.The humpback whale is near Barnegat Lighthouse State Park in Ocean County. It is unclear at this time how the roughly 20-foot-long whale died, according to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, a marine animal focused organization that responded to the whale Saturday. They said it could have been hit by a boat or something else during the storm, or died from contracting a disease. In addition to coming ashore on a holiday weekend, when few state employees are working, the below-freezing temperatures are also delaying the whale’s removal.“The whale’s too frozen,” Bob Schoelkopf, the director of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center said. “We can’t even cut into the blubber, it’s too thick and frozen.”Schoelkopf believes the dead whale was washed ashore on Christmas Eve, then taken back out to sea on Christmas as a large storm came through, and then came back ashore Saturday.Anyone visiting the area should stay clear, Schoelkopf said, because of the possibility for diseases to be in the carcass.Whale watching boats had spotted the whale alive earlier this year in Sandy Hook bay, where it had been photographed feeding, Schoelkopf said.In September, a different humpback whale was found dead off the Jersey Shore after being entangled.
