SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Military families say the squalid living conditions detailed in a new report by the Military Family Advisory Network released Wednesday don't fully portray their struggle. In Murphy Canyon, the issues range from mice, to dry rot to rust. Shelby Stevens' husband is in the Navy, and they've been stationed in San Diego for three years. On the porch she pointed out what looked like half painted pergolas and said they were full of dry rot. Inside there is no microwave, and the kitchen was much the same as it was originally in the 1990's. "We've got ant problems, roaches, mice," Stevens showed 10News her shed in the back yard. Inside there's half a dozen mice traps, with little black dots covering the floor. Stevens says those are mice droppings. On her phone, an image of a dead mouse, she said her dog killed. These issues echoed throughout the military community.A woman who didn't wish to be identified, for fear of retaliation, said her closet door had loose rusted screws she had to keep out of her toddlers' reach. She said the repair work on a clogged toilet was shoddy, saying the men left mold, and poop around the base of the toilet. The new report by the Military Family Advisory Network breaks down the problems renters face by base. For San Diego military families, the top two issues are maintenance and mold."We absolutely know that the nearly 17,000 who responded to our questionnaire, this is their reality," Shannon Razsadin, Executive Director of MFAN, said. The survey went out last January and ran for a week. Razsadin hopes the report gives military families a tool to create change. The military moms who spoke with 10News say it's not a complete picture of what they're dealing with. Stevens said 17,000 people across the country is a very small part of the military community as a whole. She said in the last several months their service has declined."We've had no shows from maintenance men, we've had no shows from contractors who are scheduled to come out to my house, no show, no call. The office hasn't been in contact with any of us," she says. Her sense of despair growing, "these are the kinds of conditions we're living in," she said tearing up.The women said they pay more than ,000 a month and say the high cost of living is what keeps them in the military housing.10News reached out to Lincoln MIlitary Housing and recieved a comment Thursday morning: 2416

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s not the new uniform that sells to thousands of adoring fans.  However, San Diego Gas & Electric’s new employee uniforms could save customers hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. All of SDG&E’s 1,800 employees that work in the field will have new uniforms by the end of the year.“The new uniforms have an embroidered logo on them. The other ones had a patch, which potentially could be removed,” said SDG&E Gas Training Supervisor Scott Hazlett.Hazlett said that embroidered logo replaces a patch worn on uniforms.  He said scammers could take the patch and put it onto any clothing. Hazlett said the embroidered logo is harder for scammers to duplicate. An SDG&E spokeswoman said someone tries to scam a customer almost every day.  The new uniforms give customers another layer of proof that they’re dealing with a legitimate SDG&E employee.Hazlett added any customer with doubts should always ask for identification and they should call SDG&E directly at 1-800-411-7343 to confirm they are dealing with an employee. The new uniforms are also lighter weight and can protect employees better from sparks and fire.“It feels great to know that the company really values its safety,” said Hazlett. 1263

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Low-lying parts of San Diego are dealing with the possibility of more coastal flooding Saturday and Sunday morning because of "King Tides." The high tide event is expected to occur the mornings of December 22 and 23, according to tidal charts. King tides occur when there is an alignment of the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's something many of us do in San Diego: We see a picturesque sunset. Rummage around for our phone and open up its camera. Snap a photo and post it to social media. One San Diegan who did just that could see her photo named the Smithsonian's mobile photo of the year.Jacqueline Mckune was walking along the Pacific Beach boardwalk with a group of friends when they stopped to notice the serene orange glow of the evening's sunset."It happened to be a really good sunset too, we just took some previous pictures before with the whole group," McKune said, and that's when she noticed a particular subject against the scenic backdrop.RELATED: Where to capture the most picturesque scenes of San DiegoThe silhouette of man creating massive bubbles with rope strung between two poles against the soft glow of the sunset."So this guy’s making these huge bubbles … and I saw the colors with the sunset behind it," McKune said. Snap. She posted her photo to Facebook and soon, commentators suggested she submit it to a photo contest. After a quick search, she came across the Smithsonian's 16th Annual Photo Contest.RELATED: Convoy Street rooster mural highlights efforts for future neighborhood archwayThat was in June of 2018. McKune's photo would slowly climb with interest: First being a photo of the day, then an "editor's pick.""It was really, really exciting," McKune says. Now, it's a finalist in the mobile category against 9 other finalists picked from thousands of submissions from hunderds of countries. And locals can help make sure it takes home the prize by voting on the Smithsonian's website here."I’m hoping to get at least the photo category," McKune said. "I’m usually a dramatic person so [if I win] there’s probably a scream in there."Voters can submit one vote per day until March 29 at 2 p.m. for McKune's photo. 1855
