CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A developer wants to add 300 more units to the Otay Ranch project in Chula Vista, expanding the housing options on the 35 acre site.Baldwin and Sons, the developer behind the project, is asking for public input at a meeting Tuesday night. It's at 6:30 pm at the Residence Inn by Marriott at 2005 Centerpark Road in Chula Vista.Right now, the project, called Otay Ranch, calls for 600 multi-family units, a 2 acre park, 15,000 square feet of commercial retail and two hotels. One of the hotels opened in 2017 and construction on the 292 planned for-sale condos is underway.Now, they want to add 300 units to the plans."There's a real need for housing in this location," says Nick Lee, a spokesman for Baldwin and Sons.Under the original plans, 300 apartments would have been built, with most of them being two or three-bedroom units. The new plans call for 600 apartments, with 65% of them being either studio apartments or one-bedroom units.Lee says this will bring in more young professionals, instead of families with children. That will minmize the impact on nearby schools, which are all near capacity.People who live nearby are more concerned about the traffic problems that will come about with 1000 new homes in the area."It's unbearable," says Michelle Harrison. "I don't think anyone planned for the congestion we already see on a daily basis."Lee says the soon to open South Bay Rapid from MTS will alleviate some of the traffic problems. The apartments are a 5 minute walk to the Otay Ranch Station.He adds the developers have worked with the city and are keeping the project well within the bounds of the General Plan. Also, Lee says an updated Environmental Impact Review showed the additional housing will not create any greater impact on the area than the original plan.Lee says Tuesday's meeting will be important to find out what the people who live nearby want to see in the complex.The company hopes to have final plans approved by the City Council in the start of 2019, so construction can begin as soon as possible. 2079

But a group of Chula Vista students has it down to a science.Rancho Del Rey Middle School's Royal Robotics team is a "well-oiled machine," as they like to put it. "It's just an amazing amount of dedication."Thanks to the completeness of their design notebook, which houses all their data, the team hopes to grab the award for best design and have a championship banner to hang at Rancho Del Rey.But the team faces one last obstacle, getting to Kentucky."It is an enormous financial obligation that I'm trying desperately to make up because the funding is basically all us," Braito said.The team has set up a GoFundMe to help with expenses and has raised almost half of their goal. CHULA VISTA, Calif., (KGTV) — More and more San Diegans are rushing to get tested for COVID-19, but the wait times at some South Bay locations are hours long.Cars wrapped around the South Chula Vista Library as hundreds of people are waited to be tested for the coronavirus."Testing is just something that we all need to be doing regularly right now," Nancy Maldonado, CEO of the Chicano Federation, said.Recently, the lines and wait times at the county's free testing sites have been getting longer, especially in the South Bay. Maldonado says this area is home to many Hispanic or Latino San Diegans who have front line jobs, with greater exposure to the virus."The other reason is the multi-generational housing, and the lack of housing here in San Diego," Maldonado explained.At its peak, Hispanic and Latinos made up 63% of the County's infection rate, despite only being 34% of the population. Most recent statistics show that number dropped to 57.7%."It's still high, and it's still alarming, but we have seen that number start to come down," Maldonado said.It's thanks to community organizations like the Chicano Foundation and the San Diego Latino Health Coalition that take away the stigma of testing. They offer resources for those who test positive, support for families, and even quarantine locations."There are resources available, so they don't have to stay within that household," Maldonado said.But there are still some obstacles. There have been reports of many people going to Aquatica, not knowing about the "appointment only" system. So they are being turned away."A lot of the county sites are switching to 'appointment only,' but that message isn't getting out fast enough," Maldonado said.That is why it is essential to check online before leaving your home, although making appointments is always recommended."It's up to all of us to make sacrifices right now and do everything we can to bring down this infection rate so we can reopen and so our small businesses don't have to keep suffering," Maldonado said.The county is now working with community partners to set up more testing locations where there is the greatest need. 2159

More than 60 homeless children and families had their holiday gifts paid for by a group fundraiser. ‘Making San Diego Smile’ formed at the end of November and was able to escort each child on a 0 Walmart shopping spree Wednesday night.“It just brings joy to my heart to know in such a short time we were able to bless so many children,” said Tony Castro, one of the organizers behind 'Making San Diego Smile.'The group says the fundraiser will be much larger next year after knowing the the popularity of it in just a few weeks. 657

(KGTV) -- Hope, peace, unity and love are some of the simple words painted on rocks that Maria Gutierrez walked by each morning."I was thankful and I would look for more and more stones," Maria said.Maria just moved to the neighborhood and was surprised to learn who was behind those painted messages."One day I was walking my dogs and I saw Ava carrying a couple of stones and just quietly putting one down," Maria described.Ava is her neighbor, an 8-year-old doing her part in lifting others in difficult times."I’s because a lot of people aren’t happy right now. My mom and I were trying to make the people in our neighborhood happy," said Ava.I asked Ava what works like hope meant for her and she replied, "if someone doesn’t think they can do something, there’s hope they’ll make it."Her mom Cyndi said others neighbors have joined in their "rocks of hope" movement."We noticed other stones placed around the tree. It was cool because other people starting doing it as well," Cyndi said.Maria moved to Eastlake last month and said Ava's efforts showed how helpful and hopeful her neighborhood could be."It made me smile and I didn't really know anybody here. It just gave me a positive feeling inside.""Little acts like that can bring other people joy in so many different ways," said Cyndi. 1325
