BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- China and Pakistan pledged to strengthen defense ties Thursday at a meeting between Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie and visiting Pakistani Chief of Army Staff Ashfaq Parvez Kayani."Cooperation between the Chinese and Pakistani armed forces is exemplary and has been fruitful," Liang, also a state councilor, said during the meeting at Diaoyutai Guest House Thursday morning.Liang said the two sides should make continuous efforts to conduct their cooperation programs well.He said China would join hands with Pakistan to bring military relations to a new high.Kayani said Pakistan values its defense and security cooperation with China, noting that the two countries have cooperated fruitfully in national defense industries in recent years.He added Pakistan would further strengthen exchange and cooperation with China.Kayani also met with Chinese State Councilor and Minister for Public Security Meng Jianzhu, top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo, and Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission Guo Boxiong later Thursday.During the meeting with Meng Jianzhu, the two sides discussed bilateral cooperation in law enforcement and security.Hailing results achieved in the two fields, Meng pointed out Pakistan's active efforts in cooperating with China, including in anti-terrorism. TAIPEI, June 21 (Xinhua) -- The economic authority of Taiwan has approved investment totaling 77.13 million U.S. dollars from the Chinese mainland, according to a statistics report released Monday.From the end of June last year when Taiwan opened to mainland investment, the authority had approved 52 investment projects on the island by the end of May, said the report from the authority.The top three industries for mainland investment -- accounting for 44.84 percent of the total mainland investment -- were computers, electronics and optical products manufacturing.At the same time, the mainland saw a sharp increase in investment from Taiwan. In the first five months of this year, the Taiwan authority approved investments in 187 projects on the mainland.New investment from Taiwan on the mainland from January to May totalled 4.59 billion U.S. dollars, a year-on-year increase of 239.9 percent.About 75 percent of the Taiwan investment in the first five months went to Jiangsu, Guangdong, Fujian and Shandong provinces, said the report.

ASTANA, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived here Friday evening for a two-day state visit to Kazakhstan.Hu said in a statement released upon arrival at the airport that, with the effort of both sides, his visit would be a total success and help advance the strategic partnership between China and Kazakhstan to a new stage.During the visit, Hu will hold talks with his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev and meet with parliament and government leaders.The two sides will outline the future development of bilateral links.
