SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's been a tumultuous year for East Village's Monkey Paw Brewery.The local brewing company was purchased by Coronado Brewing Company in July 2017, put up for sale in May of this year, and closed its downtown San Diego brewpub Monday.Coronado Brewing Company (CBC) CEO Brandon Richards said in May, months after finalizing the purchase, the sale was part of a refocusing for CBC.RELATED: Miramar's Intergalactic Brewery is closing its doors"While we were excited about the potential of Monkey Paw, the decision to sell came from the need to refocus our energy toward Coronado Brewing," Richards said. Blair said he had not received any payments, which were to be made monthly, since Oct. 2017.At the time CBC announced the sale, Richards told Brewbound the decision was not a result of the pending lawsuit. 1859

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Many of the 134 cats rescued from a Lakeside apartment are up for adoption in County animal shelters. Sheriff’s deputies who were conducting a welfare check at the apartment Thursday discovered the cats and called animal services.Most of the animals appear to be healthy and well-fed, though stand-offish at the moment.  RELATED: 'Dozens' of cats found inside Lakeside apartment during elderly neglect callThe adoptable animals are at the shelters in Bonita and Carlsbad.  All have been checked out by the veterinary staff and given flea and worm medicines.  Each will be spayed or neutered and chipped before adoption.  The adoption fee is per cat or kitten. 745

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Inside the 3D Innovations Lab at Rady Children's Hospital, the hearts, bones, skulls, and spines of patients are brought to life in a new way.Justin Ryan, Ph.D. is director of the lab. Using 3D printers, they can replicate a patient's anatomy down to every precise detail, giving doctors critical information before surgery.“The concept is by giving our doctors more information they can perform a better procedure; they can even perform it with less time. So that means less time under bypass, less time under anesthesia, which is great for the patients themselves," said Ryan.For example, if a patient is a candidate for a stent or valve, doctors could use the 3D model to try different sizes before entering the operating room. “We give them more information to plan a better procedure," said Ryan. While some of the models take several hours, many can be created within the day. “There isn’t an average day, I might have a cardiac case in the morning, an ortho case in the evening, I'll have a doctor have an idea for a medical device that they wanted to design or develop, and that all happens here," said Ryan. Ryan says the 3D models are also useful when explaining the procedure to families. The technology is currently being funded by grants and donations, at no extra cost to families. They paid off ,000 in debt and saved ,000 for the down payment.“It’s actually like adjusting in terms of watching television, and they had like the Disney Channel on, and we had to take turns so I could watch the news,” said Jennifer’s father.According to Hot Pads, it takes 28 years for a San Diego renter to save enough to put down 20 percent on a median-priced home. Moving in with parents can cut that down to 12 years.Relying on relatives may not be an option for many San Diegans.Todd Lane, president and CEO of California Coast Credit Union, says you don’t necessarily need to save as much money if you have a higher income.“Look for a program out there with a mortgage lender that offers you the option for not having to pay for mortgage insurance and making less than 20 percent down payment that’s really the key,” said Lane.Lane also suggests you avoid making big purchases prior to applying for a home loan.“Don’t just go out and borrow for a car loan just before your gonna go out and get an home loan; keep that older car,” Lane recommended.Financial adviser Dennis Brewster said aiming for a condo instead of a home is a great way to get in the home buying game.“Anything to start building the equity helps – instead of paying rent,” said Brewster.Other pro tips include using 401K investments for a down payment, or having relatives co-sign the loan. 1704
