NEW YORK (AP) — Lawyers for the Girl Scouts say that the century-old organization is now directly competing with the Boy Scouts for female recruits and that it's not a fair fight. The lawyers filed papers Thursday in federal court in Manhattan to repel an effort by the Boy Scouts to toss out a 2-year-old trademark infringement lawsuit. Lawyers for the Boy Scouts last month asked a judge to reject claims that the organization is infringing on trademarks when it recruits girls with words like “scouts" and “scouting.” The Girl Scouts say in their filing that the Boy Scouts' marketing of expanded services for girls is “highly damaging.” 648

NILES, IL — Most would agree 2020 has been a tough year. For one custom toymaker, though, it has been fueling his niche business. Part Santa’s elf, part satirist and a kid at heart, Dan Polydoris' home in Niles, Illinois is a shrine to toys. But for the avid toy collector, it wasn’t enough to just collect. A decade ago, he decided to create.“Most of the time, for figures, I start with some kind of existing figure,” he explained. “I have parts upon parts.”Death by Toys was born out of that need. But his re-purposed action figures and throwback novelties aren’t just toys, they’re often imbued with scathing social commentary.“I like a good jab at a fragile male ego as much as I love just a forklift driver who looks sexy or something like that,” said Polydoris.Everything is painstakingly made by hand. Nothing is mass-produced, which means everything is made in small batches or even as one-of-a-kind creations.Items like the limited edition "Karen" figure sell for 5. A package of air is sold as "100% Genuine Thoughts & Prayers."Last month after a fly landed on Mike Pence’s head during the vice-presidential debate, Polydoris offered up 50 "Mike Pence Head Fly" toys. They sold out almost immediately.“We're just all the worst. And we all were like, 'That fly is the hero we needed.’”In 2016, horror filmmaker Eli Roth gifted one of Polydoris’ Maniac-inspired bloody scalps to writer Stephen King. His toy-making handiwork has even been featured on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.“I will say the generally positive response to the garbage that I make has been surprising and has been a pleasure and a nice little treat," the toy maker said. But Polydoris says it’s not the mass appeal he’s interested in and he knows his edgy brand of "art" may not be for everyone.“The truth is anything that has a point of view will have someone that doesn't like that,” he said. “So, that's just the deal.”Still, in a year like 2020 where his bestselling items include the coronavirus and a garbage fire, Polydoris says his custom collectibles may just be the brand of humor we all need right now.“Someone who might have at the beginning of the year been like, ‘No thank you,’ but now, after a year of living alone and growing a beard down to here, you know we're all kind of pushed to the edge a little bit. So, I think that that kind of stuff speaks to all of us right now.” 2392

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed into law Thursday a bill that prohibits the sale of the Confederate flag and other "symbols of hate" at the New York State Fair, and bans the display of those items in public buildings. The bill was sponsored by state Sen. Alessandra Biaggi, D-Bronx, Westchester, and "prohibits the state of New York from selling or displaying symbols of hate or any similar image, or tangible personal property, inscribed with such an image unless the image appears in a book, digital medium, museum or serves an educational or historical purpose."According to the bill, a "symbol of hate" is defined as "symbols of white supremacist and neo-Nazi ideology or the Battle Flag of the Confederacy."The bill also empowers the Commissioner of the Department of Agriculture and Markets to prohibit the sale of "symbols of hate" at any other fairs in New York that receive federal, local or state funding."This bill would limit the display of the Confederate flag, as well as other symbols of hate, on or within the grounds of public property, including fairgrounds. Further, it makes clear that New York State will not tolerate racism, exclusion, oppression, and violence through the display of such antagonistic and deeply hurtful symbols," the bill said.Click here to read the full text of the bill. This story was originally published by Anthony Reyes on WKBW in Buffalo, New York. 1407

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials are taking a new tack in the coronavirus fight by emphasizing recent research that finds a mask protects the person who wears it. Previously, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised masks because of medical evidence that it stops people who are infected with coronavirus — whether they know it or not — from spreading it to others. But this week the CDC posted on its Web site a scientific brief discussing recent studies finding that a wearer gets some protection even if an infected person has no mask. The brief added that adopting a universal masking policy, "can help avert future lockdowns, especially if combined with other non-pharmaceutical interventions such as social distancing, hand hygiene, and adequate ventilation.""Experimental and epidemiological data support community masking to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2. The prevention benefit of masking is derived from the combination of source control and personal protection for the mask wearer. The relationship between source control and personal protection is likely complementary and possibly synergistic, so that individual benefit increases with increasing community mask use," the brief read. Researchers pointed to the coronavirus outbreak on the USS Theodore Roosevelt as an example of the effectiveness of mask-wearing, saying, "use of face coverings on-board was associated with a 70% reduced risk."The brief said more research is needed to identify combinations of materials used for face coverings to maximize blocking and filtering effectiveness, as well as durability and comfort. 1620
