CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A pedestrian died and others, including children, were injured Monday in a crash involving a construction truck in Chula Vista. The truck driver lost control about 1:15 p.m. in the 500 block of 4th Ave near Shasta Street, police said. The location is a residential street near Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista. The truck hit parked cars including a black pickup, which then struck a pedestrian before flipping over, said officers.Paramedics took the pedestrian to the hospital with critical injuries. The victim, an 81-year-old, later died, police confirmed. A mother and her two children, a baby and a girl, were in a parked car and suffered minor injuries. Chula Vista police are investigating the cause of the crash. At this time, police say it's unclear whether or not drugs or alcohol were involved. 844

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Experts at the Living Coast Discovery Center are keeping a close watch on their animals after a student jumped into a shark enclosure on Tuesday. The video featured a Montgomery High School student climbing on rocks before jumping in the enclosure and swimming a lap. LCDC officials believe the student took part in the stunt on a dare. The boy was not in any danger from the sharks, which were primarily sharks that don't like to be spooked, experts said. "They don't like to be scared by all those quick motions and loud noises," said Elizabeth Argyle, the director of education and guest experience for the center. "You don't know the consequences that you're going to create, and for the animals, they get spooked by it." None of the animals were harmed. The center's care staff said their animals are doing well and a veterinarian performs check-ups weekly. The student’s actions took place weeks before the center is set to open a new display. The exhibit, called the "Sea of Change" will be about co-existing with and respecting animals, focusing on how humans can live with them harmoniously, said Argyle. "We're very deeply disappointed in the actions that some of these students chose to do," Argyle added. She hopes this incident will serve as a teachable moment for others. The Sweetwater Union High School District said the teen’s behavior was inappropriate. School officials are working with LCDC to prevent similar incidents from happening again and create an opportunity for appropriate restitution for the student. 1568

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The Chula Vista Police Department is investigating a deadly crash that happened Saturday night on Telegraph Canyon Road. Surveillance at a nearby business captured the accident."Of course it was scary watching the video, right in front of our workplace here, it is scary," said Hector Ruiz, a Chula Vista real estate agent.At around 8:25 p.m., a man is seen crossing the road outside of a crosswalk. He makes it past the eastbound lanes but is then hit by a car traveling west.The driver remained on scene after the crash and has been investigating with officers. The driver did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol; no charges are expected to be filed against him. Ruiz says he is constantly worried about speeding along that stretch of Telegraph Canyon Road.Chula Vista Police say they welcome tips from the public regarding dangerous roads or places where drivers tend to speed. They can bring speed trailers to those areas to determine if there is a speeding problem. 1028

Cigarette boxes sold across the United States soon will display a new court-ordered accessory.Starting Wednesday, tobacco brands have been ordered to put "corrective statements" on product packaging that clearly state the harmful health effects of smoking, according to court documents.The order follows a long and rocky road of litigation against the tobacco industry.It comes as a result of a 1999 lawsuit that the US Department of Justice filed against the country's largest cigarette manufacturers and tobacco trade organizations, claiming civil fraud and racketeering violations over the course of more than 50 years.In 2006, federal Judge Gladys Kessler ruled that the tobacco industry had violated civil racketeering laws and ordered companies to issue "corrective statements" on their packaging, on company websites, and in print and television ads. 865

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- As the Sweetwater Union High School District deals with financial trouble totaling tens of millions of dollars, employees are starting to feel the impact. At least 300 employees with the district opted for early retirement, some of whom retired this December. Peter Bishop has worked for the district for more than 17 years as a math and science teacher. RELATED: Lack of oversight, massive spending and even larger deficits continue to plaque SUHSDBishop says he, along with hundreds of others, was offered early retirement after learning that the district was operating at a deficit. “There’s always a little bit of emotion when you go through a life transition like that. I’m sorry to leave the kids, sorry to leave my colleagues, those are the folks I’m going to miss, but, you know, time to move on.”Bishop expects that there will be an impact to schools throughout the district as experienced teachers move out and younger, less experienced ones move in. The teachers that retired were all long-term teachers. Very experienced. The offer comes as the district figures out how to deal with financial woes. A recent report by the Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team found massive spending, tens of millions in deficit and lack of oversight as just a few reasons for the financial trouble facing the district. 2213
