DOWNEY, Calif. (AP) — A man suspected of gunning down a liquor store owner near Los Angeles leaned out a car window during a chase and blasted away with a handgun before being dragged wounded from the car Friday.There was no word on his condition as he was taken away in an ambulance.He is believed to be the gunman who walked into a Downey liquor store on Tuesday night and shot down Gurpreet Singh, 44, of Cerritos, Sgt. Mark Haxton said.Police have said nothing was taken from the store and there was no immediate word on a motive for the attack.On Friday afternoon, police and Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies began chasing a black Toyota Prius in Downey, southeast of Los Angeles.The high-speed chase stretched along a freeway and surface streets, during which video showed a passenger in a black T-shirt lean halfway out of the front passenger's window and fire two-handed at pursuing patrol cars.Video showed the man using a distinctive long-barreled revolver strikingly similar to one that was used in the store killing.The chase ended at about 3 p.m. in neighboring Vernon when traffic trapped the car and the passenger again fired. A car behind the Prius managed to back away, and police who pulled up in the next lane riddled the Prius with gunfire, shattering windows.A short time later, a bloodied woman driver got out and surrendered. There was no immediate word on her condition.The street near a railroad track was emptied, and sheriff's SWAT teams were called in. Two armored vehicles blocked in the Prius.During a standoff that lasted more than an hour, authorities rolled a robot up to the open driver's door to peer inside the car and later fired two flash-bang grenades into the vehicle.When the man inside didn't get out, a police dog was sent in to pull at him. (KGTV) - In a vigil of hope held Friday night, at least 60 people shared their homes that an El Cajon teen who is reported missing in Phoenix would soon be found. Nineteen-year-old Kiera Bergman grew up in El Cajon and went to Valhalla High School, her aunt, Mindy Tarantino told 10News. The teen moved to Phoenix earlier this year with her boyfriend. Bergman's roommate reported her missing Monday when she didn’t return home and had not shown up to work.“We were told she left her house without her purse, without her car, why would she do that,” Tarantino said. “This isn't in her character. She doesn't stop communicating with people.”Kiera’s mother and sister are in Phoenix waiting for any word from the police. Meantime, her family and friends in El Cajon lit candles and prayed for her safe return.“We haven’t slept in this whole week. It’s just horrible,” Tarantino told the crowd, reminding them to stay optimistic. “Somebody is going to crack and lead us to her.” 1014

Dr. Deborah Birx, a key member of the White House’s coronavirus task force, sent a sharply-worded memo to the administration over her concerns about the rise in coronavirus cases, the New York Times and Washington Post reported on Monday.The memo comes as confirmed coronavirus cases are at record levels in the US. Cases in recent weeks have risen sharply, and a rise in hospitalizations have corresponded in recent days. Johns Hopkins University data shows cases are especially high through the middle of the US.In the memo obtained by the Washington Post and New York Times, Birx said that “aggressive action” is needed. While many states implemented shutdowns in the spring as cases surged, especially in the northeast, Birx was not calling for economic shutdowns in her memo.“This is not about lockdowns — It hasn’t been about lockdowns since March or April. It’s about an aggressive balanced approach that is not being implemented,” Birx said, according to the reports.The New York Times reported that Birx also warned against large political rallies, which President Donald Trump has been holding in recent weeks as the presidential campaign comes to a conclusion on Tuesday.Late last week, Stanford researchers said they observed a spike of coronavirus cases in communities where Trump held large rallies that had no social distancing and few people wearing masks.Dr. Anthony Fauci, a fellow member of the White House’s coronavirus task force, has become increasingly vocal as he called for an “abrupt change” in the United States’ handling of the coronavirus in an interview with the Washington Post last week."We're in for a whole lot of hurt. (KGTV) - Extra security is in place at Valhalla High School in El Cajon Wednesday after a threat was found on an athletic field.Parents and students showed 10News an email sent by school officials, which indicated the concerning message was not a credible threat.The email to parents indicated that school officials began immediately investigating the threat.Classes are operating on a normal schedule Wednesday.  Deputies are on campus along with the school resource officer. 506
