WASHINGTON, April 30 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Friday celebrated here the opening of U.S. Pavilion in 2010 Shanghai World Expo, which kicked off with a grand opening ceremony earlier in the day.Clinton invited business leaders to attend the reception, which featured a live feed from the Pavilion in Shanghai. She said the Pavilion promotes a "people to people connection" between the United States and China, which is "the base of a long-lasting relationship."Clinton thanked corporate partners for their participation, saying the pavilion is not only a partnership between China and the United States, but also a partnership between the U.S. government and the country's corporations.U.S. law forbids using federal money to participate in World Expo. In order to have a presence in the Expo, Clinton committed her "personal prestige" and helped to raise funds for the Pavilion, according to Jose Villarreal, commissioner general of the U.S. exhibition. In all, about 50 corporations became sponsors of the U.S. Pavilion. Deloitte's CEO of Federal Government Services Robin Lineberger said becoming a sponsor can help raise the company's profile.Destination management company Pacific World's North America President Jane Schuldt said the company is providing logistics services for the exhibition and all other sponsors, and as its major clients in the American business world go to the Expo, it went too. When the company "had an opportunity to stand up and support the USA Pavilion ... it seemed exactly the appropriate step to take and support to be given," she said.

BEIJING, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Suspected criminals found innocent or those whose cases prosecutors drop after excessive long periods of detention should be compensated by the state, according to a law amendment discussed by lawmakers Monday. The draft amendments to the State Compensation Law were submitted for their fourth reading to a four-day session of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, or the top legislature.According to the Criminal Procedure Law, police can detain those committing crimes or suspected of crimes. The first plenary of the 14th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), is held in Beijing, capital of China, on April 26, 2010.The Criminal Procedure Law says police should limit detention to three days and bring cases to prosecutors within those three days. The period could be prolonged by one to four days "in special cases," and to a maximum of 30 days for extremely serious crimes.Members of the NPC Standing Committee say the draft amendments should explicitly stipulate that those who have been detained illegally are entitled to compensation. Those who have been detained beyond the legally permitted period should be entitled to state compensation, the members said.Hong Hu, vice chairman of the NPC Law Committee, briefed lawmakers on the draft amendments.According to the NPC, the amendments aim to better defend people's rights from being violated by the State. It is hoped the amendments will enhance protection of detainees' rights. The current law took effect in 1995.State laws or amendments usually go through at least three readings before being adopted by China's top legislature.Top legislator Wu Bangguo presided over the session which opened Monday.

SIRTE, Libya, March 27 (Xinhua) -- China expects that the Arab summit in Libya can coordinate the inter-Arab relations and make achievements in the Palestinian cause, a senior Chinese diplomat said here on Saturday."We hope the Arab countries could coordinate internal relations and achieve positive results in reconciliation among Palestinian factions as well as the resumption of Palestinian-Israeli talks at the summit," said China's Special Envoy to Middle East Wu Sike in an interview with Xinhua on the sidelines of the 22nd Arab Summit in the Libyan city of Sirte. As a special representative of Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Wu attended the opening ceremony of the summit at the invitation of the Arab League Secretariat. He transmitted a letter of Chinese President Hu Jintao to the Arab leaders."I will convey a strong message of China that we attach great importance to relations with the Arab world, and wish to promote further developments of such relations in the future," Wu said.Wu said China and the Arab world have a long history of friendly relationship. Since the founding of the China-Arab Cooperation Forum, the two sides have seen considerable progress made in the fields of political, economical and cultural exchanges as well as energy and environmental cooperation, and more than 10 mechanisms on exchange and cooperation have been established."China-Arab Cooperation Forum has become a successful brand," said Wu.Wu said before coming to Libya, he participated in a reception in Beijing together with Arab diplomats to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the establishment of the Arab League. LOS ANGELES, June 4 (Xinhua) -- U.S.-China relations are improving on the back of their need for mutual support after undergoing a rocky period earlier this year, U.S. Congressman Adam Schiff said here Friday. The bilateral relationship came under pressure due to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, the ** Lama's U.S. visit and tensions in the Korean Peninsula, but the overall situation was good and the bilateral cooperation was at a very high level, the Democratic congressman from California told a Chinese press club luncheon.Schiff said he didn't think the current tensions on the Korean Peninsula would have a serious impact on U.S. relations with China. He said both countries needed each other's support in forums such as the six-party talks to resolve the issue of nuclear proliferation on the peninsular. The United States also needed China's cooperation in developing alternative and green energy. The two nations could not simply compete with each other on this front, but needed to learn from each other, he said.Schiff sponsored the Nuclear Forensics and Attribution Act to strengthen the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's efforts in developing techniques for "fingerprinting" nuclear material and encouraged U.S. President Barack Obama to negotiate international agreements to govern international nuclear forensics activities.Schiff is also leading the effort to combat intellectual property theft. He is a co-chair of the Congressional International Anti-Piracy Caucus, a bipartisan group of House and Senate lawmakers dedicated to working with America's international trading partners to secure the enactment of strong copyright laws as well as their vigilant enforcement.Schiff said Hollywood movies are popular in China and the movie industry is one of the few sectors enjoying a trade surplus. He said it was important for the U.S. to strengthen its efforts to fight piracy, admitting that in this field, the United States and China had many concerns.
