BRISTOL, Wis. — The heaviest pumpkin weighed in Wisconsin this year so far is 2,015 pounds. At one point during its peak growth stage, it was growing 52 pounds a day and the vines grew nearly a foot a day.The honor of most gargantuan gourd belongs to Jim Ford, who has been growing preposterous pumpkins for more than 20 years."I've always loved pumpkins. Pumpkins do something to me - I don’t know the little boy in me. I love growing things. I love growing pumpkins. I love growing all types of produce: tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, so it just takes a passion of mine growing things and turning it into a sport," he said. 632

Bills are mounting for many Americans and another one being added to the pile for some on unemployment is a bill to pay back the money they were given.“This is a massive financial hardship,” said Michele Evermore with the National Employment Law Project (NELP).Evermore explained the notice to pay back unemployment is most often due to an error somewhere in the application process or when an applicant filed for continued benefits each week."Either the agency made a mistake, or someone clicked the wrong button on a form somewhere and now are being informed that they have been overpaid for months and now have to payback tens of thousands of dollars,” she added. In some cases, when an error was found on one week, the agency disqualified people for the entire time they were unemployed.“That is a lot of money and it is money that people spent on housing and food and they have no way to get it back,” said Evermore. It is unclear on a national level just how many people are getting notices of overpayment. That’s, in part, because states are just starting to look into this and report. However, so far, states like Texas reported it is seeking refunds from 260,000 people, Ohio announced it overpaid at least 160,000 people, and in Virginia, the number of people overpaid is at least 35,000.“We are going to hear a lot more of this happening in a lot more states, and we are going to hear a lot more horror stories if this legislation isn’t passed,” explained Evermore. In its stimulus package, the House of Representatives has included legislation that would waive the unemployment overpayments as long as they aren’t considered fraudulent activity. However, the package is unpopular with the Senate. NELP believes the forgiveness is critical to those on unemployment and our economy.“It was estimated during the last recession that every dollar spent on unemployment insurance generated .61 in local economic activity,” said Evermore. "So, imagine that in reverse, imagine that money getting sucked out of communities as we are still in very rough economic times.”Without federal waivers, that could be a reality. NELP added that people in a situation where they have received a notice of overpayment have two options to consider, if they cannot afford to repay the benefit. In some states, you can file for a waiver, especially if the mistake was made on the part of the states’ unemployment system. If you do not qualify for a waiver, you can seek an appeal and review of your particular case. 2511

BRADFORD, England – An intensive care unit doctor in England ran about 22 miles in a mask to show people that face coverings won’t hinder their oxygen levels.Dr. Tom Lawton says he was upset about the misinformation going around about oxygen levels and masks, so he wanted to demonstrate how safe it is himself."I was frustrated because I've seen some photos where people who sat at a desk wearing a mask and claimed that the oxygen levels dropped just simply wearing a mask," Lawton told CNN in an interview Sunday.During his run to and from work, Lawton used a pulse oximeter to measure his oxygen levels, which he says were “stubbornly” 98% every time he checked, and his mask never came off.The mask didn't come off at all (no food or drink) - and oxygen levels were stubbornly 98% every time I checked. Please feel free to cite this when anyone suggests they're bad for you, and stay safe - and COVID-free.Thanks! https://t.co/ApgpoOTZCz (n/n)— Tom Lawton (@LawtonTri) July 20, 2020 In an interview with CTV News, Lawton said any oxygen level above 95% would be considered normal and safe.Lawton admits that wearing the mask wasn’t always comfortable during his journey, but he argues that it’s worth it to keep yourself and those around you safe.Lawton told CNN that he doesn’t think masks alone are going to solve the COVID-19 pandemic, but they should be worn in public, we should practice social distancing and we should practice good hand hygiene to help stop the spread of the novel coronavirus. As if spreading the message about mask wearing wasn’t enough, Lawton is also using his media attention to raise money for Trussel Trust, which operates food banks in the U.K. 1688

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Vice President Mike Pence insisted schools should reopen to in-person instruction for students in a visit to Louisiana. The state has reemerged as one of the nation's hot spots for the coronavirus only months after signs pointed to a successful outbreak response. The Republican vice president appeared at Louisiana State University with Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards and other state leaders. Pence described the nation as "in a much better position today to deal with the pandemic" even as virus cases surge across much of the country. Louisiana isn't taking the wide-open approach sought by Pence. Schools are planning a mix of online and in-person learning this fall. 705
