SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of San Diego has a new challenge that promotes bike riding, exploring the community and supporting local businesses. The Better by Bike blog is website that features everything from bike routes, to bike repair tips, to features on local bike riders.Part of the new program is a scavenger hunt that takes riders through the mid-city area. It ends Aug. 30 and is a competition to see who can get the most points after visiting local businesses and answering questions. The challenges range from taking pictures of specific spots to describing murals painted by local artists. It uses the Scavify application. Winners will then be awarded prizes, including gift cards to local restaurants.Anisha Gianchandani is the Climate Advisor for the City of San Diego and said this is part of a bigger-picture project to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and make San Diego more livable.“So it’s really just a fun way to get outside safely, enjoy your neighborhood and support small local businesses,” she said, later adding that “when you slow down, you get to see so many parts of your neighborhood that you normally wouldn’t see in a car.”It also helps local businesses. Stores and restaurants had the chance to submit their locations to be part of the scavenger hunt, which brings foot traffic to the area.Juan Pablo Sanchez’s family owns Super Cocina, one of the stops on the scavenger hunt. They had a local artist paint a mural on their wall outside, and their question pertains to that art.“We want to encourage you to use these streets, to go through us, to see our culture, to see the people that live here,” said Sanchez.Rudy Vargas, a native to the City Heights area, has embraced the challenge, heading up the leaderboard. He said even though he is familiar with his home, he’s still learned new facts about his neighborhood.“It was a good way to revisit some of my favorite places in City Heights but also visit some places I didn’t even know existed,” said Vargas.Vargas said he first picked up a passion for riding bikes when commuting to SDSU as a student, and has since kept up the passion.“My hope is that we continue this culture change and we step away from our vehicles because like I said there’s no other feeling like it,” he said. 2286

SAN DIEGO — A lawsuit was announced Monday over the death of Roxsana Hernandez, a transgender woman who died in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody earlier this year as she sought asylum at the border.Hernandez arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border in San Ysidro in May from her native Honduras, but Transgender Law Center Director Lynly Egyes said Hernandez “came to the U.S. seeking protection and instead was met with torture.”"An independent autopsy report reveals that Roxsana was shackled for a long time and very tightly, enough to cause deep bruising on her wrists. She also had deep bruising Injuries consistent with physical abuse with a baton or asp while she was handcuffed, according to an examination of the tissue by an independent expert board-certified forensic pathologist," Egyes said.According to attorneys, Hernandez died from dehydration after being denied water and medical care.Hernandez, who was HIV positive, became very ill as she was transferred from California to Texas, back to California, and then to New Mexico, where she died.Hernandez’s family is hoping the wrongful death lawsuit will provide answers as to what happened. The suit was filed against the state of New Mexico.With many LGBTQ migrants arriving in Tijuana to seek asylum, many advocates hope the lawsuit announcement serves as a reminder that they will be watching as LGBTQ migrants present themselves at various ports of entry along the U.S.-Mexico border."Her death was entirely preventable," Egyes said. 1525

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Two families are devastated after their pets go missing. After days of searching, they find out their dogs were adopted from local shelters.“I would give anything to have him back,” says Valeria Mega?a. The Spring Valley family’s poodle mix, named Cookie, has been missing since Halloween. “Its been really hard. Life is not the same without him.”After searching day and night, the family got word cookie was placed at the El Cajon Animal Shelter. When Mega?a checked, she was told Cookie had already been adopted.A similar situation happened to a family in City Heights. Nora Avila says she was out of town when her dog Mocha, who was staying with a neighbor, got out. By the time she made it to the San Diego Humane Society, he had already been adopted.“We pleaded with them to let the family know… that we loved him. He was never abandoned,” says Avila.The El Cajon Animal Shelter and the San Diego Humane Society have holding periods four days for animals with no identification.Cookie and Mocha were not microchipped. “One in three pets in their lifetime is missing at some point, that’s why for us again, it is so important that people microchip their pets,” says Jennifer Brehler, with the San Diego Humane Society.Both shelters tell 10News they have notified the adopters but they have decided to not return the animals.The families are hoping they will have a change of heart. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Realtors say all the signs point to a busy spring and summer in San Diego."It's heating up a little bit," says Markus Feldmann, with the Pacific Real Estate Center. "We see a very active market again."Home prices have come down from their record peak in August of 2018. That month, CoreLogic reported that San Diego's median home price was 3,000. In December, it had dropped to 0,000 (see chart above). According to their numbers, homes in San Diego sold for ,000 more in that period than other times of the year.
