SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Thursday that several more shoreline park areas and piers and boardwalks would be reopened this week amid the COVID-19 pandemic.Mayor Faulconer says the following will be reopened in June and July:June 8: East and West Mission Bay Parks will be open for park and water use, including parking lots at 100% capacity.June 8: Fiesta Island opens to pedestrians, dogs, and cyclists only.June 9: All piers and boardwalks within city limits reopen.June 12: Balboa Park Central Mesa reopens and all Balboa Park parking lots open at 100% capacity.July 6: Fiesta Island opens to vehicles.Gatherings are still prohibited and social distancing is still required at beaches and parks. Mayor Faulconer said active sports at the beach are still banned as well."We're continuing to make meaningful progress as we continue to reopen across San Diego," Faulconer said.This week, county beaches allowed visitors to sit, sunbathe, and relax on the sand, in addition to passive activities like walking and running.Ocean activities, like swimming, surfing, kayaking, and paddle-boarding continue to be allowed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego City Council leaders Tuesday voted to approve a plan to fund three temporary housing shelters for the city's homeless.Council leaders voted 8-1 to approve the plan. Councilman David Alvarez was the only "no" vote.The largest shelter at 16th and Newton is scheduled to open by Dec. 1. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are investigating the death of a man they say appeared to have been in an altercation right before his death.SDPD officers responded to a medical distress call just after 2 p.m. Tuesday inside a home at 6600 Springfield Street in Encanto. When police arrived, San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were already there performing CPR on a man.Police say the man was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.Homicide detectives arrived and began investigating. Wednesday, police said investigators learned that the man was involved in a physical altercation and injured before his death. They add that the man had difficulty breathing and collapsed.The 45-year-old man, identified Thursday as Antoine Deonte Dorsey, was a resident of the home and has been identified, but his name is being withheld at this time, police say.Police are now trying to locate witnesses of the altercation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County reported a record new 1,802 coronavirus cases on Friday, bringing the region's total to 78,159 cases thus far.The new cases resulted in an 8% positive rate out of 21,671 reported tests for the county's daily tally. No new deaths were reported on Friday, as the death toll sits at 996.The new case totals come as public and federal health officials urge the public to keep gatherings limited and small this Thanksgiving and not to travel.Hospitalizations in the county remained at 580 on Friday, while ICU cases rose slightly from 166 to 173 — both of which have nearly doubled since a month earlier, according to the county's data.There were 82 community outbreaks in San Diego County as of Friday.
