Delaware has made history as the first state in the nation to ban child marriage under all circumstances.Democratic Gov. John Carney signed a bill this week making it illegal for anyone under age 18 to get married, even with parental consent.Before this, minors in Delaware could get married at any age with parental consent and a judge's approval, officials said.Despite most US state laws setting the age of marital consent at 18, every other state and the District of Columbia have loopholes for minors seeking marriage licenses, experts say. Texas and Virginia, for instance last year enacted new laws limiting marriage to those 18 and older, but they made narrow exceptions for minors granted adult rights by the courts."Most US states set the minimum age at 18," Human Rights Watch said in a statement. "But except for Delaware, all still allow exceptions, most of which are very broad -- for example with parental permission, or for pregnancy. DALLAS (KTNV) — Charley Pride, whose rich baritone voice and impeccable song-sense altered American culture, died Dec. 12 in Dallas of complications from COVID-19 at age 86.Born a sharecropper’s son in Sledge, Mississippi, on March 18, 1934, Pride emerged from Southern cotton fields to become country music’s first Black superstar and the first Black member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.“No person of color had ever done what he has done,” said Darius Rucker in the PBS American Masters film Charley Pride: I’m Just Me.Pride was a gifted athlete who at first thought baseball would be his path from poverty, labor, and strife.But his musical acumen was more impressive than his pitching arm or his hitting skills, and he emerged as one of the most significant artists at RCA Records, with chart-topping hits including “Kiss An Angel Good Mornin’,” “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone,” and “Mountain of Love.”He won the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year award in 1971, its top male vocalist prize in 1971 and 1972, and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.His final performance came on November 11, 2020, when he sang “Kiss An Angel Good Mornin’” during the CMA Awards show at Nashville’s Music City Center with Jimmie Allen, a modern-day hitmaker who counts Pride among his heroes. 1310

Despite a prenatal condition that left him without a hand, Shaquem Griffin has always dreamed of playing in the NFL. On Saturday the Seattle Seahawks made that dream a reality — and gave Griffin the unique opportunity to play alongside his twin brother.Griffin was born a few minutes after his brother in 1995 with amniotic band syndrome. The condition left him with an underdeveloped hand that caused him severe pain, and Griffin later had his entire left hand amputated.Despite the setback, Griffin took up football and still routinely dominated opponents at Lakewood High School in St. Petersburg. When he signed to play collegiately at Central Florida in 2013, recruiting service Rivals listed him as a 3-star prospect.Griffin and his brother, Shaquill Griffin, continued stellar play together in college. Shaquill left UCF a year early and was drafted by the Seahawks in 2017. While Shaquill played in the NFL, Shaquem stayed behind and lead the Knights to an undefeated season at linebacker, recording 74 tackles, an interception and a fumble return for a touchdown.At the NFL Combine earlier this year, Shaquem stunned scouts by bench pressing 225 pounds 20 times while wearing a prosthetic hand. Decades of underinvestment has left tens of thousands of schools across the country with inadequate ventilation systems, a problem that is now front and center in the debate to reopen schools during the pandemic.Nationally, 90 percent of schools fail to meet minimum ventilation standards. It’s an issue Dr. Joseph Allen has been sounding the alarm about since COVID-19 first shut down schools earlier this year.“We’ve chronically underinvested in our schools’ buildings,” said Dr. Allen who serves as the director of the Healthy Buildings program at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health.Dr. Allen and his colleagues have spent months analyzing school buildings, and back in June, they released a detailed 60-page report that school districts could follow in order to safely bring kids back into the classroom.In order to keep COVID-19 from spreading in schools, two things have to happen: everyone in the buildings must be wearing masks and school districts need to ensure buildings have proper ventilation, the report found.“If air is being recirculated and not filtered, all of that air that’s coming from one space and going to another could be potentially contaminated and spread the virus,” Dr. Allen said.But replacing decades-old ventilation systems that may not work properly is expensive and time-consuming. Because of that, Dr. Allen is recommending school districts also consider portable air cleaners for classrooms.Through his research, Dr. Allen found that if you can change the air in a classroom five times per hour, it cleans the air in that space every 12 minutes. However, the air cleaners must be equipped with a HEPPA filter in order to be effective.Even something as simple as opening windows could reduce the transmission of the virus.“If you look at the cases of spread in school right now, they all share common traits; it’s no mask-wearing and low to no ventilation. When we do that, we can guarantee there will be more cases,” he explained.Last week, the Healthy Buildings program also released a detailed portable air cleaner calculator. The tool allows school administrators to input the size of the classroom, even ceiling height, and then determine the kind of air cleaner that would most effectively keep COVID-19 from spreading.“It is critically important that we get kids back into in-person learning and we haven’t treated it as this national priority that it needs to be,” Dr. Allen added. 2438
