FUZHOU, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- China has begun efforts to build the largest regional cooperation platform, covering a geographical area that produces around one-third of the country's GDP.As key to this effort, on Friday, the 6th Pan Pearl River Delta (PPRD) Regional Cooperation and Development Forum opened in Fuzhou, capital of southeast China's Fujian Province.The forum, scheduled to run from Aug. 27-31, is celebrated the theme of "deepening cooperation and seeking common development". It has attracted more than 10,000 participants, including officials, entrepreneurs and celebrities from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, as well as Taiwan.The forum, begun in 2004, seeks to stimulate the economy within the pan-Pearl River Delta region, which covers Hainan, Yunnan, Hunan, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Fujian, Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangxi, as well as Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions.This move would help enhance regional cooperation, encourage labor mobility and accelerate the relocation of industry from China's well-off coastal region to the comparatively underdeveloped western region, said Xu Shangwu, secretary general of the Organizing Committee of the forum.This would improve the comprehensive economic strength and global competitiveness of the entire region, he said.During the previous five PPRD forums, more than 14,000 cooperative projects have been agreed, with their total investments exceeding 1.8 trillion yuan (264.71 billion U.S. dollars), according to government statistics.The GDP of the nine provincial regions in the Chinese mainland totaled 10.5 trillion yuan last year, up 11.8 percent from one year earlier. The growth rate was higher than the national GDP increase.In addition to boosting the growth and cooperation in the pan-Pearl River Delta, China is also accelerating regional development in the northeastern region, Yangtze River Delta region, Bohai rim region, as well as the pan-Beibu Gulf Economic Zone.

HAIKOU, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- More than 130,000 people were evacuated after more than 550 villages were submerged by floods by Wednesday afternoon in southern China's island province of Hainan, local authorities said late Wednesday.The torrential rains are the heaviest in Hainan since 1961, a spokesman for the provincial government said.Water levels at five reservoirs are now in danger of crossing their limits because of heavy rains across the island. Rescuers are working to reinforce them, the official added.The floods have damaged two highways, two national routes, eight provincial routes along with several other roads.So far, no casualties have been reported among tourists, the official said.Torrential rains have battered many areas of Hainan for six days. Several cities, including the provincial capital of Haikou and the beach resort of Sanya, have also suffered flooding. The four cities of Qionghai, Wanning, Ding'an and Haikou were most seriously hit. Parts of the island received an average 324.7 mm of rainfall.Hainan Island is a famous tropical tourist resort and attracts millions of visitors every year. However, tourist numbers were reported to be down by nearly 50 percent Wednesday, the sixth day of the one-week holiday celebrating National Day on Oct. 1.The rains are expected to weaken but continue until the end of the seven-day holiday, an official at the provincial meteorological observatory said Wednesday.

BRUSSELS, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- China expected France to take new steps in pushing the European Union (EU) for positive policies toward China, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Monday.The relations between China and France were of important influence to China's links with the EU, said Wen during a meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy on the sidelines of an Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit in Brussels.China attached great importance to developing ties with France and appreciated France's willingness to enhance cooperation with China, said Wen. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (L) meets with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Brussels, Belgium, Oct. 4, 2010. BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- China and South Africa pledged Friday to step up legislative cooperation to cement the bilateral strategic partnership.The pledge came out of the meeting between Chinese President Hu Jintao and Speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa Max Sisulu in Beijing.Hu said growing China-South Africa relations require stronger collaboration between the legislatures of the two countries.Hu hoped the two legislatures could launch their regular exchange mechanism at an appropriate time and work to improve such mechanism.Sisulu said the the National Assembly of South Africa hoped to make a new contribution to boosting cooperation between the two countries.On China-South Africa relations, Hu said bilateral relations have "reaped good harvests" since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1998.Sisulu agreed with Hu's comments, saying China's remarkable progress contributes to world peace and development and inspires South Africa and other African countries.Also Friday, Wu Bangguo, chairman of China's National People's Congress(NPC) Standing Committee, held hour-long talks with Sisulu at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.Wu said the NPC and the National Assembly of South Africa have a good foundation for cooperation, and urged the two legislatures to maintain exchanges at a high level.While calling for the two legislatures to work more closely in regional and international legislative organizations, Wu said a regular exchange mechanism should be launched as early as possible so as to improve ties between the legislatures of the two countries.Sisulu said the National Assembly of South Africa and the NPC of China should strengthen bilateral exchanges and seek closer cooperation in multilateral legislative organizations.As South Africa is a big country in Africa and an important emerging economy, China hopes to communicate more and coordinate with South Africa over Sino-African cooperation so as to advance China-Africa relations and South-South cooperation, Wu said.The visit to China was Sisulu's first since he was elected to the position of speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa in May 2009.Apart from Beijing, Sisulu will also visit the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest water control project, on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, China's longest.
