SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Almost 2,000 people gathered in San Diego to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Friday at the 38th annual Human Dignity Award breakfast in Mission Valley. “He fought and gave his life not just for African Americans but for everyone,” said Dee Sanford, this year’s honoree. Sanford stared a telecommunications business in 1994, was an adjunct professor at colleges, and created public access television and radio stations. “You don't do it for honor but when someone remembers and acknowledges your work, it’s really a humbling experience,” she said. My father was part of the civil rights movement. He was our king,” said Sanford. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A Scripps Ranch man left for the storm ravaged Caribbean Island of St. Maarten Monday. RELATED: 70 percent of St. Maarten homes badly damaged, as Jose prepares to hitDrew Goodwin is volunteering his time and equipment to help recovery crews with his drones.Irma pounded the islands when it made landfall there last week.“I know (military personnel) are going to help restore order and make things safer so people can get in to start recovery,” Goodwin said.Goodwin is with Emergency Response Drones, a nonprofit that provides drone services to agencies.  He’s assisted with search and rescue efforts locally.He raised money so he can fly himself and his equipment to the island.“I have the support and resources, and if I didn’t do it, I would be ashamed of myself,” Goodwin said. 822

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A search was underway Friday for eight service members who disappeared in the waters off San Clemente Island after a training exercise involving an amphibious assault vehicle (AAV).One Marine died following the training accident and two were in critical condition at a hospital.The accident is the third time in less than 10 years that someone has been injured or died in an AAV during training. Colonel with a background in intelligence and amphibious reconnaissance, says one of the most difficult operations in the military is amphibious operations."There is an inherent danger because every once in a while those things will take on water and if they do you've got a lot of marines trapped in a vehicle and it's going to be very difficult to get everyone out safely," Kempfer said.In 2017, 15 Marines were injured during a training exercise when an AAV caught fire. In 2011, a Marine was killed when an AAV sank off the coast near Camp Pendleton."It does happen, that when you go into the water things will leak. There's hatches all over the vehicle on top, in back the crew has hatches," Kempfer says.Injuries during training exercises aren't specific to amphibious assault vehicles. In 2015, one Marine was killed and 18 others were injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash.Kemper says they are horrific events when they happen."We train like we fight an obviously like its very nature the armed forces is a very dangerous business that's what we do," said Kemper. 1721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman who shot through her neighbors’ apartment in Clairemont Mesa after they complained about noise was convicted Tuesday.Brittany Lefler, 37, is facing up to 36 years in prison after being convicted of assault with a semiautomatic firearm among other charges.The prosecutor in the case argued that Lefler was drinking and was “out of control” and “verbally abusive” when Erik Morales called police around 1 a.m. on December 29, 2016 at her apartment on Beadnell Way. RELATED: Topless standoff suspect pleads not guilty in courtMorales and her roommates told police Lefler kept banging on the wall and screaming inside her apartment. When officers arrived, Lefler wanted to know who called police on her. Morales’ 19-year-old son said that, at one point, he went outside and asked Lefler to “keep it down.”That’s when Lefler reached into her boot and pulled out what appeared to be a gun. "She (Lefler) said, `C'mon outside, I'll bust a cap in you,"' Henry Molina testified.Molina said he heard Lefler telling police she kept a gun for “things like this.” Deputy District Attorney Michael Reilly told the jury that around 5 a.m., Lefler pointed her gun at the people inside Morales’ apartment before pulling the trigger."She (Lefler) did it on purpose," the prosecutor said. "In a moment of anger and fury, she shot through that front door. Ms. Lefler sent a message with a bullet through that front door. She can't do that!"Deputy Alternate Public Defender Gilson Gray told the jury Lefler called 911 several times that night but police didn’t help her.Gray said Lefler was home alone, scared and outnumbered by her complaining neighbors. Gray also told the jury that Lefler had been practicing pole dancing.Gray said both sides were yelling at each other when Lefler fired a shot accidentally when a door suddenly slammed. 1860

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego-based U.S. Coast Guard crew rescued a man having a heart attack on board a tanker off Point Loma Tuesday morning.The Chembulk New York, a 525-foot tanker vessel, radioed the Coast Guard for help Monday at 4:15 p.m. At the time, the ship was 370 miles southwest of San Diego, Coast Guard officials reported.A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter left San Diego at 10:45 p.m. to rendezvous with the ship, which changed course to facilitate the medical evacuation.At 1:30 a.m., the helicopter crew arrived and hoisted the man on board. The crew flew him to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.The man was reported to be in stable condition, according to the Coast Guard. 708
