EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - The owner of a bike shop came upon a heartbreaking scene: glass everywhere and pricey, custom bikes stolen. "You just feel violated right away," said Jason Guthrie, owner of Chainline Bikes on Pioneer Way.On Sunday morning, he went to his shop to fetch a bike for a ride. "Came around and saw the cable had been pulled through the window. All the glass was here. My heart dropped. It was on the floor with the glass," said Guthrie.The intruder had tossed a large rock, smashing a side glass door. The alarm didn't go off. Once inside, the intruder sliced the security cable."There were four empty slots in the rack," said Guthrie.Four mountain bikes - three of them custom made - were missing, worth about ,000."For a small shop, a couple thousand dollars worth makes a huge difference ... keeps our lights on for the next month," said Guthrie.Among the bikes that vanished is "Mary." "Everybody knew the bike by name," said Guthrie.Painted by the shop, the bike became well known in the mountain biking community and the shop's mascot."Whenever I would go to bike parks from here up to Whistler, Canada, they would know my bike and not necessarily me," said Guthrie.Guthrie says one of the bikes had actually sold online the night it was stolen. (KGTV) — El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells said he plans to call for a special City Council meeting on Friday to discuss instructing local police officers not to enforce coronavirus-related regulations."The people of El Cajon are suffering and it is highly unfair and nonsensical that big box stores, grocery stores, club stores and now even schools are open while nail salons, restaurants, churches, and other businesses and organizations are shuttered," Wells wrote on Facebook. "My people are suffering from not only financial ruin, but many are enduring severe depression, anxiety, isolation, and many other emotional, spiritual and sociological deprivations as a result of this stunning governmental overreach."Wells wrote that he will propose that the El Cajon Police Department stop enforcing mask, non-essential business, and social distancing laws.Speaking with ABC 10News, Wells said that he understands that the county and state may continue to hand out fines or criminal charges on businesses despite the stance. He added that he takes the virus extremely seriously but the mental health issues surrounding restrictions are too much."I don't enjoy taking a stand like this, this isn't going to be any fun. But I think my responsibility to the people are more important than my comfort," Wells, a mental health professional, said. "I want to emphasize I'm not telling people not to wear masks. (KGTV) - An El Cajon man says a new spinal procedure changed his life, but the Army veteran is now locked in a battle with his military health insurance plan which refuses to cover it.Ronald Maddern says he can't understand why TRICARE, his secondary insurance, would deny coverage of the procedure after his primary insurance, Medicare, agreed to cover 80 percent of the cost. Both insurance plans are run by the federal government."Makes me feel like a second-rate citizen after I served in the military for so many years," he said.The denial by TRICARE left him with a bill of ,756.Maddern had the Vertiflex procedure in 2017 to treat spinal stenosis, which had largely confined him to a wheelchair for 17 years. Maddern is now able to walk with help from a cane for balance."It was a drastic success," said the 71-year-old. "My quality of life now is very, very good."The procedure, developed by a Carlsbad company, was approved by the FDA in 2015. It has been performed thousands of times across the country, said Maddern's surgeon Dr. Michael Verdolin."It is extremely frustrating that one arm of the government says yes and the other portion, really the pinky, says no," he said.In a letter of denial, TRICARE argued Vertiflex is an "unproven procedure," despite its FDA approval."There have been 15,000 cases across the US. It's been cleared for use," Verdolin said. "There is no question to be asked about its efficacy."TRICARE did not immediately respond to requests for comment by 10News.Ronald Maddern's insurance case is now before an administrative law judge. EDINBURG, Texas - A bizarre incident during a high school playoff game in Texas on Thursday left a referee with injuries after being attacked by a player he had just ejected.Edinburg High School defensive end Emmanuel Duron was penalized for shoving another player to the ground and attempting to tackle the opposing team's quarterback after a play was over The Monitor reports.Referee Fred Garcia ejected Duron from the game for the two unsportsmanlike penalties.After Garcia announced the ejection, Duron charged back onto the field and slammed into the referee, causing him to fly back into the artificial turf.Duron's teammates and coaches held the player back while crews attended to Garcia. Four off-duty police officers escorted Duron out of the stadium and away from the premises.Garcia was able to walk off the field on his own and was evaluated in an ambulance outside the stadium. He was reported to have suffered a concussion and a shoulder injury.After the delay, the game resumed and Edinburg ended up defeating Pharr-San Juan-Alamo 35-21 to advance to the playoffs, The Associated Press reported. But on Friday, the team was removed from the playoffs by the school district, the district announced in a statement."The district has decided to remove the Edinburg High School football team from the playoffs after an unexpected incident involving a student that occurred during a football game on December 3, 2020," the district said. "We extend a sincere apology to the referee and his family. On behalf of the Edinburg CISD Board of Trustees and administration, we apologize to the athletes, staff, and our school community. We will take the appropriate disciplinary action once we understand the facts and circumstances underlining this incident. EAST COUNTY (CNS) - One vehicle overturned and another one ended up in a ditch in a collision today in Jacumba Hot Springs, the California Highway Patrol said.The two-car collision happened at 12:22 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 8 near Carrizo Gorge Road, the CHP said.A gray Chevy Silverado and a black Lexus sedan collided and landed in the center divider. The Silverado overturned but all of the occupants got out of the vehicle, according to a CHP incident log.Tow trucks were called to the scene.
