SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some San Diego salon owners say the regulations released by the state may not be enough to help save their businesses.Like other business owners around San Diego and across California, salon owner Season McKesson has been trying to navigate through the many changes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.Through the pandemic, she and other business owners have had to deal with closures, implementing safety precautions, and obtaining personal protective equipment.RELATED: New guidance issued for hair/nail salons, barbershops to move outdoorsOn Monday, the state announced updated guidelines for hair salons and barbershops to operate outdoors.McKesson was prepared to reopen her salon to operate outside until she read the regulations thoroughly. According to the state’s guidelines, salons can reopen but they cannot offer any chemical-related treatments and cannot shampoo customers.“At first, I was trying to be optimistic; you know, giving our industry a way out to come back … but after they dropped the bomb that it’s only haircuts. Reality sets in, and there’s absolutely no way people are going to make ends meet,” she said.McKesson told ABC 10News the guidelines cuts what she believes are essential to the salon experience. She added, “You go to a salon for a certain experience and you’re going to sit and get sprayed down in 100-degree weather. There’s no way.”McKesson is also concerned about the space to operate outdoors, saying not many salons have patios and would have to move into parking spaces. She is similarly worried about the cleanliness of working outside.“It’s not sanitary. It’s not a controlled environment; sitting behind a chair is a controlled environment. I know it’s being cleaned and I know what’s being touched,” McKesson said.Several other salon owners around San Diego County told ABC 10News they are leaning towards not reopening because of the rules, which puts them in an already tough financial situation as they try to keep their businesses alive. 2021

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Shanna Ben-Moshe says the Torrey Pines Glider Port is one of her favorite places in San Diego. But on a visit last month, she saw something that ruined the trip.“I didn’t really know what to do because I was so shocked to see that in a place that I go to all the time," Ben-Moshe said. She's talking about a remote control plane - with a Nazi swastika painted on the rudder.“My great-grandma is a holocaust survivor,” Ben-Moshe said. “She was in Auschwitz for a long time. She lost all her family.”Ben-Moshe took a picture of the plane just before she left. She shared it with Brian Blacher, who co-runs a nonprofit group called Shield of David, which fights anti-Semitism.Blacher went back to the gliderport to investigate. The plane wasn't there, but a different pilot explained that it's common for people to fly German replica warplanes.“It's hurtful," Blacher said. "We've got a big Jewish community, we've got holocaust survivors living here. He's like, 'it's a plane, what are you so upset about', kind of deal."It's unclear who flew the remote control plane, and there wasn't anyone flying those kinds of planes when ABC 10News went to the gliderport on Wednesday. Robin Marien, the flight director at the gliderport, declined to comment on the swastika plane. He noted, however, that radio control pilots do tend to fly planes with vintage design.Ben-Moshe, now back in college in Wisconsin, says this won't stop her from going back to the gliderport. “It's a place that I love," she said, "and I don’t want anything to take away from that." 1575

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo biologists are part of a team of researchers that have rescued the last remaining southwestern pond turtles from an area ravaged by the Bobcat Fire. The researchers spend the last couple of weeks finding and recovering the reptiles from the San Gabriel Mountains. The area, which was scorched by the Bobcat Fire, from Sept. 6 until early November, is now at risk of mudslides and debris flows from rain, which could impact the turtles."Our role as conservationists is to provide refuge and care for wildlife in trouble," said Kim Gray, curator of herpetology and ichthyology, San Diego Zoo Global. "We are happy to make a home for these pond turtles until their home in the mountains can be made safe for them and their offspring."The southwestern pond turtle is now rare in Southern California and faces risks to its survival, including habitat loss, invasive nonnative predators and competitors.Over the two weeks, researchers rescued eight southwestern pond turtles. The turtles will be cared for at the San Diego Zoo until their habitat is made after this year’s rainy season. When their habitat is secure, they will be returned. 1173
