SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Too many young military families in San Diego are finding themselves trapped in mountains of debt, not knowing where to turn.It's a devastating problem that the nonprofit Support the Enlisted Project (STEP) is working to tackle."It's a real challenge, and I think we are setting these families up for failure a lot of the times," said Tony Teravainen, CEO and Co-founder of STEP. "Their wage with all their allowances, E4 and below, 100% of them are below HUD's low-income level."RELATED: San Diego woman climbs out of 3,000 debt holeTeravainen says families often don't ask for help until things have gotten really bad. STEP helps prevent roughly seven evictions each month for young military families. "As a country, we don't have great financial habits. And what we see is when families enter the military we put additional burdens on them, and a lot of times this pulls them further, further into debt. We ask them to move their houses every two to three years; service members can be deployed at least a third of the time."The goal is to get as many families in need into their Emergency Financial Assistance (EFA) Program.RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Millennials outpace Generation X in both total debt and long-term savingsThe EFA Program is a unique social-work and change-management based program that was specifically designed to move military and veteran families from a financial crisis to a lifetime of financial self-sufficiency. Each family gets a social worker who helps them create a budget and set goals for the future.Teravainen says 4,500 families have come through the program since it was created in 2012 and they have a 90% success rate."A success story to me is a family that can change their behaviors," said Teravainen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Windmill Farms Community Market in Del Cerro is asking for the public's help locating their stolen trailer.The family-owned grocery store has been serving San Diego since 2003 with a mission to provide healthy, organic foods at affordable prices. Surveillance video from the early morning hours on Sunday captures a white SUV with black rims circling the market. At around 4:30 a.m. the SUV hauls off the trailer. “Just unbelievable," said Michael Villegas, produce manager and buyer. “That trailer was a big part of our business; everything we had for our events was in that trailer."Villegas is also in charge of the store's community events, like bringing food to the Lake Murray 4th of July Fireworks and bringing fresh produce to schools. “Schools depend on us to do the events, if we have to start over it’s going to be tough," said Villegas.The trailer held all their tents, tarps, tables, and BBQ's.Villegas estimates the loss at around ,000. “I just hope we can get it back, you know, that would be awesome if we could get it back, if anybody seen anything give us a call," said Villegas. A spokesperson for San Diego Police says a report was filed and a detective should get the case in a few days. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While Willy Wonka isn't expected to show up to San Diego Comic-Con, his famous promotion will appear before hungry fans.For the fourth year, the San Diego Convention Center has created its own chocolate bars that will be sold inside the center during Comic-Con, the center announced this week. A total of 3,800 chocolate bars will be made and sold near Ballroom 20 for each.But the real surprise comes underneath the wrapper for four lucky fans. 10NEWS' COMIC-CON CENTRALThe convention center has hidden four "golden tickets" inside the bars, according to the center. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two people are dead after a car and semi-truck collided during a Border Patrol pursuit in Otay Mesa Tuesday night, agents say. According to Border Patrol, two people were seen crossing over the border into the United States early Tuesday night. Agents described them as a man and a woman.The agency told 10News a getaway car was waiting for the pair. The driver of the car led agents on a high-speed chase reaching speeds of more than 100 miles per hour. RELATED: Three hospitalized after Border Patrol chase leads to crash in CampoThe pursuit lasted for about a quarter of a mile before the driver reportedly lost control and crashed into the back of a semi-truck, forcing the car beneath the truck and into a ditch. Two of the men inside the vehicle died while the woman was taken to the hospital and, as of Tuesday night, was listed in critical condition. The identity of the victims hasn’t been released. 937
