SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 19-year-old man was behind bars Friday on suspicion of fatally shooting an acquaintance at a San Ysidro motel.Customs officers who recognized Jonathan Orduno of Chula Vista from a be-on-the-lookout bulletin took him into custody at the San Ysidro Point of Entry on Thursday night in connection with the death last week of 22-year-old Adrian Torres-Garcia, according to San Diego police.A housekeeper found Torres-Garcia dead in a rented room at a motel in the 100 block of Calle Primera shortly before noon March 18, homicide Lt. Matt Dobbs said. The victim, a South Bay native with no known permanent address, died of at least one gunshot to his upper body.RELATED: San Diego police investigate death of man at San Ysidro motelDobbs declined to disclose a suspected motive for the shooting or release details on what led investigators to identify Orduno as the alleged killer. The lieutenant also would not say if the suspect was trying to leave the country or was re-entering the United States at the time of his arrest.Police have not recovered the gun that killed Torres-Garcia, Dobbs said.Orduno was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of first- degree murder. He was being held without bail pending arraignment, tentatively scheduled for April 6. 1292

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A convicted sex offender will be released from a state hospital and placed at a sheriff's facility in Jacumba Hot Springs, where he will continue treatment in a conditional release program, a San Diego judge ruled Monday. Alan Earl James, 56, was convicted in 1981 and 1986 of numerous sex-related felonies involving several minor victims -- who included younger family members -- and sentenced to 28 years in state prison. James, who is classified as a ``sexually violent predator,'' was committed to Coalinga State Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment ``for an indeterminate term'' until he petitioned for a monitored conditional release last summer, prosecutors said. By April 25, James will be placed at 45612 Old Highway 80 in Jacumba Hot Springs. RELATED: San Diego County Supervisor asks state to look into placement of sexually violent predatorsPlacement at the facility was proposed by the California Department of State Hospitals. San Diego County Superior Court Judge Albert Harutunian -- who recommended James' integration into the conditional release program last fall based upon the evaluation of psychiatric experts -- ruled that the Jacumba Hot Springs facility meets the criteria for placement. James' impending release was met with opposition last week during another hearing in Harutunian's courtroom, which drew a crowd that included his former victims, county Supervisor Dianne Jacob and members of the community. Harutunian told attendees that he understood their opposition to James' release, but said citizens would be better suited directing their concerns towards the legislature, which determines sentencing guidelines and penalties for offenders. RELATED: Hearing held to determine placement of convicted 'sexually violent predator' in San DiegoRobert N., who now lives on the East Coast, said he flew 3,000 miles to make his voice heard regarding James' release. He said James held a butterknife to his neck and threatened to kill him if he told anyone about the abuse, which happened to him and his siblings more than 30 years ago. ``My biggest fear is that this time, he'll end up killing a kid,'' he said. ``I understand that he's going to be monitored and all that, but eventually, there's going to come to a point where someone's going to turn their head or something and not be paying attention and that's where he's going to end up striking.'' Robert N.'s sister, who went by L.N. while speaking to the court, said James assaulted her when she was 4 years old, and urged Harutunian to have James placed in a facility apart from communities where children and families live. RELATED: Dianne Jacob slams proposed placement of predator: 'He has no place in our community'``I feel he will re-offend given the opportunity,'' she said. Following his conviction and release for abuse committed against her and her siblings, L.N. said James assaulted another girl and was convicted again. ``I understand he has to be released. However, he just does not need to be in the community of San Diego,'' she said. ``I no longer live in San Diego. However, I still have family here, family that are children, as well as adults, and will all be impacted by this. I just fear that he will hurt another child and I don't want that to ever happen again.'' RELATED: San Diego's newsmakers: Supervisor Dianne JacobJacob, whose district includes Jacumba Hot Springs, said the rural communities of eastern San Diego County have experienced ``an over-concentration'' of sexually violent predator placements and have become ``easy pickins'' for the placement of sex offenders. According to Jacob, nine sexually violent predators have been placed in Jacumba Hot Springs, Campo and Boulevard. ``There are not the resources, there are not the services out there (in the East County) in order to support the ongoing treatment of sexually violent predators, yet the state has chosen to place nine of these in these communities anyway, and I believe it's wrong and enough is enough,'' Jacob said.Editors note: This story has been corrected to show that the placement of Alan James was the responsibility of the California Department of State Hospitals, not the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. 4237

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Prosecutors said Monday that a California man killed his business partner and his family out of greed, according to the Associated Press. Prosecutor Sean Daugherty told jurors that Charles Ray Merritt wrote checks totaling more than ,000 on his partner’s QuickBooks account after the family disappeared. The comments came during opening statements in the trial for the alleged murders of Joseph McStay, Summer McStay and their three and four-year-old sons. Prosecutors also say that, while being questioned about the family’s disappearance just days after they went missing, Merritt kept referring to Joseph in the past tense.Outside the courtroom, defense attorney Rajan Maline said Merritt’s livelihood depended on McStay being alive. The McStays disappeared from their Fallbrook home in early February 2010. Days after they were last seen, the family’s SUV was found abandoned at a strip mall parking lot in San Ysidro.RELATED: Trial set to begin in McStay family murder caseIn 2013, the bodies of the family members were found in the Mojave Desert, near Victorville. Prosecutors said the family died from blunt-force trauma to their heads. Authorities found a sledgehammer, believed to be the murder weapon, in one of the graves.According to court documents, investigators believe Summer McStay may have been raped before she was killed. Merritt was arrested in connection with the killings in November 2014 after sufficient evidence linking him to the case, including DNA, was discovered.Authorities alleged Merritt killed the family members inside their home and then buried them in the desert. Merritt also tried to paint over the crime scene, according to authorities.During Monday’s opening statements, jurors in the San Bernardino County courtroom are expected to hear a tape of Merritt being questioned by investigators.Merritt, 61, has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and is being held without bail.Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the case. 2017

SAN DIEGO — The main stretch of Avenida de la Playa in the La Jolla Shores area is closing to vehicles through September so restaurants can set up tables out on the asphalt.Restaurants began setting up Wednesday for the outdoor service, which will run through Sept. 27. The change comes in response to a new round of Coronavirus related restrictions that make it illegal for restaurant to serve food indoors. Avenida de la Playa will close to cars from El Paseo Grande to Calle de la Plata. Restaurants will be setting up in the part of the street that was reserved for parking spaces. There will be a 20-foot wide walkway down the center of the road for pedestrians to pass. The move will allow restaurants that lost capacity due to restrictions a chance to add tables. Piatti, for instance, will get 16 additional tables by moving outside, creating 35 new shifts for its workers."I've been here 29 years and I've been able to tell people I'll have something in an hour, I'll be able to seat you in 90 minutes. Those are extreme wait times. and now I'm actually saying for the first time ever, I don't have anything tonight," said Piatti General Manager Tom Spano. The lunch and dinner service will run from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. 1236
