TULSA, Okla. — An Oklahoma woman has faced terrifying health scares over the last year from a tick bite. Nancy Phelps' tongue and face have swollen up many times. She has also spent countless hours in the hospital because she could not breathe. She learned it is all because she was bit by a Lonestar Tick while she was playing with her grandkids in her yard in the spring of 2017."They fall off trees," Phelps said. "They're out in the grass." She started seeing symptoms lke rashes and having stomach problems early on. Phelps thought it was random.Then in the fall, she started going into anaphylactic shock, meaning she could not breathe because of an allergic reaction. "Within about a week time, I was in the emergency room with anaphylaxis eight different times," Phelps said. Several doctors later, Phelps learned that tick bite gave her the Alpha Gal Allergy. It causes an allergic reaction to all mammal-based products."They could feed on an infected animal, get a parasite that then when they feed on a human that human could be infected," said Luisa Krug, the epidemiology supervisor for the Tulsa County Health Department. The CDC said this week that diseases caused by infected ticks, fleas and mosquitoes have tripled in the last 13 years. More than 640,000 cases have been reported. When Phelps consumes mammal bi-products or is around them, she has a severe allergic reaction. Her face and tongue start swelling up. She said she has to inject herself with an Epi-Pen once every one to two weeks. "Anything boxed, in cans, anything you would typically buy off the shelf," Phelps listed what she cannot eat. "Pizza...I didn't realize I liked pizza so much, but those kinds of things are non-existent anymore."Her allergy is so bad that she even has to worry about cross-contamination. Phelp said she bought all new pots for her home. Eating out is nearly impossible now. She has to show restaurants a document she keeps on her phone that lists what she can and cannot consume. Phelps can no longer take gel cap pills, because they are made with animal bi-products. Make up, toiletries, laundry and dishwashing soaps and certain clothing are also a problem.Phelps wants others to take note of her story and take serious precautions. "It's avoidance and being aware of our surroundings," Phelps said.The health department suggests wearing long sleeves and pants outside to avoid being bitten by bugs. (KGTV) - As the dual-threat of wildfires and climate change grows, one company says an old method of home building could be the answer to both problems.Rebecca Tasker is the CEO of Simple Construct. Her company builds homes out of straw bales.And, yes, she's heard all of the jokes."I've heard every single 'Three Little Pigs' joke you can think of," Tasker says. "Some good ones, some not so good ones."But the idea of straw bale homes is serious to Tasker."These homes, once they're plastered, are more fire-resistant than conventional homes," she says.The secret is in the construction. Tasker uses high-grade straw bales that are packed solid. She says that makes them like phone books, so they smolder instead of igniting in flames. Also, the plaster her company uses to cover the walls is made from dirt, clay, and more straw. The mixture gives the homes a 1-2 hour fire-resistance rating. Most homes only get a 30-minute rating."The oxygen can't get in to burn," Tasker says.In addition to the fire resistance, Tasker says the homes are environmentally friendly. The thick bales provide a two-foot layer of natural insulation. That blocks sound to 50 decibels. It also keeps the warmth in during the winter and the heat out during the summer."We're actually sequestering carbon in the walls," she says of the process. "We're helping to reverse climate change with these buildings. And as people start to put those two things together, we're getting a lot of business."Tasker says straw homes have been around for more than 100 years and came to California in 1996. Now, she estimates more than 60 are in use in San Diego County.She says the size of the bales can be a drawback, as it takes up valuable square footage on smaller lots. She also doesn't recommend building any higher than two stories.As for bugs or rodents, Tasker says they can't get into the walls because of how densely packed the bales are.Even the interior walls, which are typically made from traditional wood and studs, are packed with the straw/clay mixture.The construction price is comparable to conventional homes with similar insulation and efficiency ratings. Tasker thinks the idea will catch on as more people become more aware of the way these homes can help the planet.As for the little pigs jokes, she wrote a book called "The Story of the Fourth Little Pig." Uber has agreed to pay 56 current and former employees about ,900 each, or .9 million, to settle their claims of gender discrimination, harassment and hostile work environment.On Monday, lawyers for the plaintiffs filed paperwork in a Northern California district court that outlined how a million settlement announced in April would be divvied up. In addition to the .9 million, another .1 million will be divided among more than 480 workers, including the 56 who are receiving the other payouts.The lawsuit was filed against Uber in October 2017 by three Latina engineers who alleged they were paid less than their white or Asian male colleagues. The women claimed Uber used a discriminatory "stack ranking" system, alleging "female employees and employees of color are systematically undervalued ... because [they] receive, on average, lower rankings despite equal or better performance."Those stack rankings were then used, in part, to determine promotions, according to the lawsuit. Uber also set employee pay based on their past compensation, which inherently disadvantages women.Fifty-six workers came forward to describe their experiences with discrimination and harassment at Uber.
