Severe weather plagued several states throughout the Midwest over the weekend, killing one person and damaging at least one building.Vickie Darnel, 64, died from drowning Sunday after she drove into a flooded creek crossing in Le Flore County, Oklahoma, according to Lt. Kera Philippi, spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.Philippi says that Darnel's vehicle was swept off the roadway around 4:30 a.m. Sunday near the border of Arkansas.The area saw a number of flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings from the National Weather Service over the weekend.The National Weather Service is sending an assessment team to South Bend, Indiana, after a tornado touched down in the area and destroyed at least one building.The building was the site of Growing Kids daycare facility, according to Aaron Miller, dispatch supervisor for St. Joseph County Public Safety Communication Center.Miller told CNN that the building suffered extensive damage and there were several reports of trees down throughout St. Joseph County.Missouri State Highway Patrol along with the Missouri Department of Conservation and several local agencies performed multiple water rescues Sunday for people whose vehicles were in the water.They also rescued people who were stranded by high water due to heavy rainfall, according to the Missouri Department of Public Safety.A subdivision in Neosho, Missouri, and parts of Roaring River State Park had to be evacuated, although it was unclear how many people had to leave, the Missouri Department of Public Safety said.The band of weather that caused all of this chaos is called a frontal boundary and it acts as a cold front but doesn't actually have any cold air behind it.The mixture of the boundary layer is slightly cooler dry air and hot humid air which can cause intense storms. 1821

TAMPA, Florida — A Tampa firefighter is back to work after being electrocuted and then brought back to life in December. Wesley Stevens enjoys wood working as a hobby. He got into a process called fractal burning, which is a technique that electrically burns unique branch like designs into wood. Stevens says he built a machine with his father and had done the process a few times before, but this time something went wrong. A 2,000 volt electric shock was sent through his body. "I was pulseless in the driveway and the friend that was with me she began CPR after calling 911,” he said. Hillsborough County Sheriffs Deputy Ernie Foster was on another call down the street and was able to get to his house within one minute. Because of his quick response, he was able to start CPR on Stevens right away. That most likely saved his life. They say the typical response time is around three to four minutes. According to paramedics, Stevens' heart stopped beating for 17 minutes. He was technically dead. "Dead is no pulse, not breathing and he was there. Without intervention, he was not going to survive whatsoever,” said Lt. Ryan Anusbigian, with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue. The CPR kept the blood flowing, which also kept his brain going. "It is a very long time and I would say it’s extremely unusual because most cardiac arrests are not witnessed, it was the CPR that really did him good,” said Lt. Anusbigian. "If you imagine holding your breath for four minutes versus holding your breath for 60 seconds, and that was really the difference there." Stevens woke up in the hospital two days later. Just a few days after that, he and his wife welcomed their baby boy Morgan into the world. "That was a big reason I was fighting to come back,” said Stevens. Nearly 10-weeks-old now, Morgan is happy and healthy — and so is his father. He says fractal burning is a process he will never do again. "It’s just not worth it, especially with Morgan here now I just don’t need it,” he said. Stevens is now back to work full time. As a thank you for saving his life, Stevens designed special firefighter wooden flags for the crew that responded. 2157

SURPRISE, Ariz. — LaRissa Waln's been waiting for the day she'd get to walk across the stage and receive her high school diploma, but she might not get the chance. The 17-year-old attends Valley Vista High School in Surprise, Arizona, and says she started decorating her cap for the ceremony more than a week ago. But just this week, school administrators said caps had to remain blank. "If I do wear it, I won't be able to walk," Waln said. Her cap though has a special meaning. Waln's father helped create the design, a tribute to their Native American culture. The cap is adorned with intricate beadwork that represents the Wahpeton Sioux tribe. "It means everything to me, to be a part of it in any way possible," she added. "We did pay for the cap and gown out of our own pockets, and we should have the right to decorate it." Administrators said it wasn't a school policy though; it's enforced district-wide. Here's Dysart Unified School District's full statement: “The Dysart Unified School District understands that graduation is an exciting time for students, and our goal is to ensure each student is appropriately recognized for successfully graduating high school. We respect the formality of our graduations and believe that decorated caps take away from the purpose of the ceremony, calling unnecessary attention to individual students.
