VIENNA (AP) — Eliud Kipchoge sent shockwaves through the world of sport by becoming the first athlete to break the two-hour barrier for a marathon, although it will not count as a record.The Olympic champion and world record holder from Kenya clocked 1 hour, 59 minutes and 40.2 seconds at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge on Saturday, an event set up for the attempt.Kipchoge, who compared his attempt earlier to a man landing on the moon, twice punched his chest in celebration and smiled when he finished."That was the best moment of my life," he said before adding that he trained four-and-a-half months for his extraordinary race against the clock. "The pressure was very big on my shoulders. I got a phone call from the President of Kenya."Starting at 8:15 a.m., Kipchoge was supported by 36 pacemakers who accompanied him in alternating groups, one of the reasons the IAAF governing body will not ratify the time as a world record.The groups were also helped by a pace car with a laser beam, projecting the ideal position on the road, and they received drinks handed over by cyclists and other runners to prevent them from having to slow down."It is a great feeling to make history in sport after Sir Roger Bannister," Kipchoge said in reference to the late Briton's first sub four-minute mile in 1954. "I am the happiest man in the world to be the first human to run under two hours and I can tell people that no human is limited. (KGTV) - The Vista Unified School District's school board on Tuesday passed new rules for its middle and high schools seeing cases of COVID-19In a special meeting, the school board discussed a staffing issue that’s occurred since reopening for in-person learning last week.There have been at least four confirmed COVID-19 cases within the district. As a result, teachers are being quarantined and school officials say they’re having difficulty finding substitute teachers to fill in.The board unanimously approved a plan that would allow in-person learning to continue as the district addresses the staffing issue. The plan is to use a threshold system to close down some of its middle schools and high schools with positive COVID-19 cases.The details have yet to be hashed out, but in principle, the district's board agreed the new rules would be:-- If one school has two positive cases in a specific time, the whole school would have to switch to virtual learning for 14 days-- If three secondary schools see one case each within a certain period, all three would have to go virtual for two weeksMission Vista High School already has two positive COVID-19 cases, so the district plans to close the school on Thursday and transition students and staff to virtual learning. They plan to notify families and faculty on Wednesday.The new threshold system does not apply to elementary schools.There is one reported case each at Roosevelt Middle Schoo, Alamosa Park Elementary School, Mission Meadows Elementary, and Alta Vista High.In light of the positive cases, at least 400 students and nearly two dozen staff members have been ordered to quarantine. 1672

Warning: Video attached is disturbingLAFAYETTE, La. -- Louisiana State Police are investigating after a Black man was shot and killed by officers in Lafayette, Louisiana, on Friday.State police say shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday, the Lafayette Police Department responded to a disturbance involving a person armed with a knife at a convenience store. Officers encountered 31-year-old Trayford Pellerin of Lafayette in the parking lot of the convenience store on NE Evangeline Thruway. As officers tried to apprehend Pellerin, troopers say he fled the scene and a foot pursuit ensued. Officers deployed Tasers as they pursued Pellerin, but they were ineffective.Pellerin, who was still armed with a knife, attempted to enter an occupied convenience store along the NW Evangeline Thruway. Officers discharged their weapons and Pellerin was struck by gunfire.Pellerin was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. No officers were injured.The officers have been placed on administrative leave, according to the spokesperson for the Lafayette Police Department.The investigation is active and ongoing. Investigators with the state police will be reviewing body cam video from Lafayette police.Video being widely shared on Facebook shows a man with what witnesses said was a knife in his hand walking away from police toward a convenience store.
