SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man is dead after a hit-and-run driver struck him on Interstate 5 near Old Town overnight.Officers said the man was found lying dead in the middle of the highway at about 2:45 a.m. Saturday, prompting a closure of I-5 lanes for several hours.Only a bumper was found near the man, officers said. The man was not immediately identified.The suspected car, a 2004 Honda Accord, was located nearby at a gas station off the highway. Officer said they have the vehicle's license plate as well.The driver has yet to be located. 568

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new camera system along the west coast helps firefighters pinpoint wildfires faster. ALERTWildfire has officially launched the first 70 cameras in Southern California including 15 here in San Diego. There are 160 total cameras along the west coast in Washington, Oregon, Nevada and California. UCSD Geosciences Professor Neal Driscoll has worked for two years as the co-developer for ALERTWildfire. Driscoll tells 10News, "they form this network, we can triangulate and we can actually locate the fire so we can give this ignition point to the first responders". Driscoll hopes to see ten times the number of cameras installed in five years. For him, it's more than just new technology, Driscoll says it's a faster way to protect buildings and people caught in wildfires, "in the old days wed have to send out engines or aircraft". Now, fire crews will be able look at the cameras online to see how sever the flames are before calling rigs to the scene. "We can scale our response up or down from the information on the camera". ALERTWildfire is funded by utility companies including SDG&E as well as Southern California Edison. 1162

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man from El Salvador has been granted asylum in the United States after having been sent back to Mexico to await his trial.According to his attorney, Narciso Cruz, the man is only the second person to receive asylum who had been sent back to Mexico due to the Trump administration’s Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP.)“This individual is a bit of a rarity,” said Cruz, referring to his client’s success in court.But his story is not a rarity.Marcos fled violence in El Salvador and did no want to use his full name for this story, still fearing the gang he fled in El Salvador.“They’re a terrorist group,” said Marcos.He became targeted earlier this year after he tried to help his cousin who was being recruited by the gang. After he interfered, he started receiving death threats.“They will kill you and your entire family,” he said.He traveled to the United States, crossing the border on June 25 somewhere near Tecate.He said he wandered in the desert for five days before he was eventually picked up by Border Patrol agents and taken to a holding facility. Within a day he said he was sent back across the border to Mexico where he would wait for his case to be heard.The Trump Administration implemented the MPP in January. Despite some pushback from the courts, the policy, also called “remain in Mexico,” was allowed to go forward.As of September 1, the U.S government has sent 42,000 asylum seekers to Mexico, according to the Department of Homeland Security.As for Marcos, his case is not officially done yet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man claimed four off-duty San Diego Police officers beat up him outside of a local bar.“I have a laceration on the back of my head, three staples, a lot of bruises a lot of cuts on the face,” said Jonathan Felix.Standing in his attorney’s office, Jonathan Felix described a November night he’ll never forget."All I remember is waking up in my own pool of blood a few times,” Felix told 10News.Felix said that after working a shift at a restaurant in the Gaslamp Quarter, he stopped by a Mission Valley bar for a drink.He said he lives nearby and uses its parking lot because parking in the area is scarce.According to Felix, before he headed home for the night, he saw four men standing near his car. He said he didn’t know them, but wanted to make sure the valuables he had in his vehicle were safe.He said after a few interactions with the guys, they didn't leave and appeared to be intoxicated.He claimed the men never identified themselves as San Diego Police officers."I felt threatened for my life,” Felix said.Felix's attorney said at some point, Jonathan Felix pulled a gun and held it at his side. The officers surrounded him, and the situation escalated.The San Diego Police department saw it differently, calling the off-duty officers victims of assault with a deadly weapon.
