State officials said it appeared a tornado had hit the residence.In Indiana, a 4-year-old boy is missing after strong currents from heavy rains swept him away in Delphi, Indiana.The child, Owen Jones, was playing in Deer Creek on Thursday when he was swept away by fast currents.Heatwave in the southeast, cold in the westAs the stormy weather continues in some parts of the country, the holiday weekend is set to herald in the informal start of summer with record high temperatures forecast around the southeastern US.CNN meteorologist Allison Chinchar said new records could be set for high temperatures in dozens of cities, in states from Louisiana to Virginia, setting the stage for potentially deadly conditions.Anyone who spends time outdoors this weekend should keep hydrated, wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, and try to stay in the shade, she said.Several cities could see triple-digit temperatures. The once mighty brands of Sears and Kmart are continuing to slowly disappear as Sears announced on Thursday the closure of 96 additional stores. The 96 locations, which are a mixture of Kmart and Sears branded stores, are set to close by February. The closing locations will have going out of business sales starting on Dec. 2. The footprint of Sears and Kmart will further shrink by one third with this round of closures, leaving fewer than 200 total locations nationally between the two brands. This announcement comes less than a year after more than 200 Sears and Kmart locations closed. While other retailers in recent years, such as Toys 'R' Us and RadioShack have faded away, Sears' demise would mark the end of an industry titan. The company was at one time the nation's largest retailer, selling items as small as earrings, to as big as houses. The announcement does not impact the nearly 400 locations that operate as Sears Hometown or Sears Outlet locations, which feature appliances and electronics. The biggest post-holiday scams out there hit gift cards to specific stores like Starbucks or Best Buy and even generic Visa or MasterCard debit gift cards. They usually target when people go to check their balance online, according to the Better Business Bureau. They often lead you to a fake website, either from an internet search or a fake email that popped into your inbox. The fake website, which often looks like the real website, asks for the gift card number and the pin/security code. Once you click submit on the fake site, the scammers have all the information and can start using it and your gift money is gone. But this year's scams don't just affect gift cards. As technology gets smarter, like our computers and smart TVs, scammers are turning into hackers to get to your personal information. Before you even start using that new smart TV, computer or other piece of technology, make sure you update it. The prompts will usually appear on the screen or you can find them inside the "settings" or "about" windows on the device. Also, make sure you register the device to your email address. That won't just help with the warranty, it will also make sure you get email updates if there are security breaches. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday that they have increased the number of cases of lung injury and deaths associated with e-cigarette product use to 805. Of those 805 cases, there have been 12 fatalities. The 12 fatal cases have been reported in 10 states, including two in both California and Kansas. Two weeks ago, the CDC opened its Emergency Operations Center after 380 confirmed cases of lung damage caused from vaping. Given recent reports of deaths tied to smoking electronic cigarettes, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Monday it is activating its Emergency Operations Center.The CDC said that activating the Emergency Operations Center "allows the agency to provide increased operational support for the response to meet the outbreak’s evolving challenges. Agency subject matter experts will continue to lead the CDC response with enhanced support from additional CDC and EOC staff."The CDC has stressed that it does not know exactly what is causing an outbreak of lung disease among those who vape. The CDC said that its investigation has not identified any specific e-cigarette or vaping product (devices, liquids, refill pods, and/or cartridges) or substance that is linked to all cases.“CDC has made it a priority to find out what is causing this outbreak of e-cigarette or vaping-related injuries and deaths,” said CDC Director Robert Redfield, M.D. “Activation of CDC’s Emergency Operations Center allows us to enhance operations and provide additional support to CDC staff working to protect our Nation from this serious health threat.” 1615
