John Sherer is the organist and director of music at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, Illinois. “Being a musician is a true calling, because through music you can touch people, you can heal people, you can connect to people in a much, much deeper way, than just through words,” he says. "I feel like God is right here and is right next to me."Sherer discovered his calling to be a musician early in life, and he’s a big reason why a very special organ in Chicago exists today.“This is the largest pipe organ in Chicago, with well over 8,000 pipes,” Sherer explains. “You’ve heard the phrase ‘pulling out all the stops’, well this is where it really comes from. You pull out all the stops, you’re going all the way, you’re going to get a big, big sound.” The creation of pipe organ took 10 years. Designed by John Michael Quimby, a consultant from New York, the instrument was completed in 2016.“It’s really like having a whole orchestra right under your fingertips," he says. "You’ve got English horn and French horn and flutes and strings and trumpets and trombones, and no two organs are alike.”It takes your entire body to play the instrument, and the intricate details are what make each organ one-of-a-kind. It also provides a full spectrum of sound. “Mozart himself said it was the king of instruments.”The organ is capable of the lowest frequencies any instrument can make, and the highest frequencies any human ear can hear.“The smaller the pipe, the higher the sound. That is the highest note in the organ, so that pipe’s about the sound of my little finger,” he says.To appreciate the instrumental wonder, you have to go inside.“The organ starts in the basement where the blower is located," Sherer says. "The air from the blower goes through massive tubes up to the pipes, and the pipes go all the way up to the ceiling. It’s like being in a tree house at this point, because you’re surrounded by so many different sections of the organ.”Sherer says the pipes are located in the front of the church, in the back of the church and on the sides of the church. The whole building becomes part of the instrument from basement to ceiling, front to back and side to side.The pipes in the back help create a surround sound so everyone can feel connected to the music. The finished product is a beautiful amalgamation of sight and sound.“When people walk into Fourth Presbyterian Church, their eyes make them go ‘ahhhh’ and when they hear the organ, their ears make them go ‘ooooh.’”Sherer explains it as an out-of-body experience as you’re aware of the whole space around you. “I hope that when people hear this organ, they feel comfort and healing, and that they are inspired and lifted up," he says. "And I hope that when they experience the sound of this organ, they realize that there’s something in the universe that’s larger than them.” 3184

Kia is joining its affiliate Hyundai in recalling thousands of vehicles in the U.S. because water can get into a brake computer, cause an electrical short and possibly a fire.The Kia recall covers nearly 229,000 Sedona minivans from the 2006 through 2010 model years. Also covered are Sorento SUVs from 2007 through 2009. Kia is telling owners to park their vehicles outside and away from structures and other vehicles until the problem can be fixed.The company says in documents posted Thursday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that moisture can get into the antilock brake control computer and cause an electrical short and possible fires. Kia has reports of seven fires, but no injuries. The problem can happen even if the engine is turned off.The recall is another in a series of problems that the South Korean automakers have had with engine fires during the past few years. Past problems have triggered investigations by the U.S. road safety agency.Dealers will install a relay in the main electrical junction box to stop power from going to the brake computer when the engine is off. The recall is expected to start April 10.Earlier this month, Hyundai recalled nearly 430,000 small cars due to the same problem. That recall covered certain 2006 through 2011 Elantra and 2007 through 2011 Elantra Touring vehicles. Both companies said the rate of fires is low, but Hyundai is not recommending that the cars be parked outside.Hyundai said in documents that it has three reports of fires and no related injuries. Last April, NHTSA opened two new investigations into fires involving Hyundai and Kia vehicles after getting complaints of more than 3,100 fires and 103 injuries.The agency granted a petition seeking the investigations by the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety, a consumer advocacy group.The investigations, one for Hyundai and the other for Kia, cover noncrash fires in almost 3 million vehicles from the affiliated automakers. The probes cover the 2011 through 2014 Hyundai Sonata and Santa Fe, the 2011 through 2014 Kia Optima and Sorento, and the 2010 through 2015 Kia Soul. The complaints came from consumers and from data provided by both automakers.NHTSA had previously said it would incorporate the noncrash fires into a 2017 investigation that examined recalls of Hyundai and Kia vehicles for engine failures. Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens says an active-duty solider at Fort Leavenworth helped stop an active shooter Wednesday on the Centennial Bridge over the Missouri River.In a news conference, Kitchens said the incident started on the Kansas side of the bridge.That's when a 34-year-old soldier from nearby Ft. Leavenworth stepped in and "saved the day" by striking the suspect with his vehicle, according to Kitchens."He saved countless people," Kitchens said.Kitchens said the suspect, described as a Platte County, Missouri man, was armed with at least a handgun and a semi-automatic rifle and was firing seemingly at random at cars on the bridge after getting out of his car.The suspect was injured in the crash with the soldier and was taken to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries.Another active-duty solider from Fort Leavenworth, was struck by the suspect's fire.That soldier's injuries were also not life-threatening.The soldier that stopped the shooter was not injured.Initially, police responded to the bridge around 11 a.m. on a possible road rage incident.The shooting incident was contained to the bridge and all parties have been detained.The Missouri Department of Transportation said the Centennial Bridge, which connects Leavenworth with Platte City, Missouri, has been closed for the investigation. 1348

In a press conference updating media members on the events of the Aug. 4 mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, police chief Richard Biehl said the Dayton police department was updating the casualty count of those injured or killed by gunshots to 26.Previously, police had said that nine people were killed and 14 people were injured by gunshot wounds. Police now say 17 suffered gunshot injuries.The count does not include those who suffered injuries while trying to escape the gunman.During Tuesday's press conference Biehl walked media members through an updated timeline of the shooting.
