SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – As hospitals across San Diego prepare to distribute the COVID-19 vaccine to front line workers, questions have been raised about whether receiving the vaccine will be mandated for healthcare employees.“We will not make the vaccine mandatory. We do not make the normal flu vaccine mandatory. We do, however, require our staff to continue to wear masks throughout the entire flu season if they chose to not get the flu vaccine,” Palomar Health CEO Diane Hansen told ABC10 News. She said that Palomar Health’s policy will be no different with the COVID-19 vaccine. On Monday, ABC10 News spoke to hospital representatives at Sharp Healthcare, Scripps Health and Kaiser Permanente. They echoed Palomar Health's policy in that the COVID-19 vaccine will not be mandated but workers who decline to get it must wear PPE.San Diego employment attorney and legal analyst Dan Eaton told ABC10 News on Monday that hospitals can impose a mandate but so far that hasn't happened. “Employers generally have the legal right to mandate vaccination in the private workplace, subject to accommodations for medical conditions and religious objections, but there is a broader ethical question about whether they ought to mandate vaccination,” he said. He explained that the concern becomes whether mandating a resistant population creates a morale problem. “[The question is] whether, at the end of the day, you're acting in a nurturing fashion toward your employees if you mandate a vaccination that they don't want or they don't trust.”Eaton said it may be that at some point the state or federal legislature steps in in some form or fashion with respect to mandatory vaccination, but that's not the current case. 1718

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As the unofficial start of summer came and went, one thing that many San Diegans were without was the use of community pools.Reopening community and apartment pools is listed in San Diego County's pilot program to phase into California's Stage 3 of reopening early. The county has submitted a letter petitioning the state to be allowed to enter the pilot program, but has yet to hear back.RELATED: Is it safe to swim in pools this summer amid COVID-19? CDC offers guidanceWhile Memorial Day weekend say many Americans looking to cool off, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention offered new guidance on community pools. The agency says currently, "there is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, spas, or water play areas. Proper operation and maintenance (including disinfection with chlorine and bromine) of these facilities should inactivate the virus in the water."But for San Diego County, health officials are leaning on the state for the go ahead on pools. Sarah Sweeney, communications officer with the county's Health & Human Services Agency, says the risks go beyond pool chemicals.RELATED: Gov. Newsom: Reopening guidelines for California gyms, fitness businesses coming soon"In the case of pools, it’s not the water that’s the concern. It’s the gathering of individuals across different households for extended periods," says Sweeney. The county's public health orders allow for water activity in the ocean, bays, and lakes. But health officials says it's unlikely that large groups will swim together in the ocean and people aren't expected to wear facial coverings while engaged in active water sports. 1722

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As President Donald Trump threatens to shutdown the U.S.-Mexico Border, San Diego leaders are in Mexico City to strengthen economic ties and talk binational business.Five mayors and nearly 100 elected officials, business and community leaders from San Diego and Baja California left for Mexico Sunday for the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce’s 14th annual Binational Delegation to Mexico City.San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said the top two issues up for discussion are the continuing Mexican sewage runoff problems that impact our beaches and the free trade relationship between the U.S. and Mexico.Monday, Mexican officials said 70 percent of trade with the U.S. is by trucks, and the Mexican Government is ready to collaborate with the U.S. to ensure border safety and that trade flows efficiently.“Free trade is incredibly important to our region here in San Diego,” said Faulconer. "We have over 100,000 jobs that are dependent upon trade with Mexico.”Faulconer said the goal is to create a safe, secure and functioning border. He is also calling for the approval of the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA.The Chamber also said advancing USMCA is a key priority of this week's meeting.Monday the delegation will discuss the U.S. Mexico trade relationship, including the border, immigration and economic development. On Tuesday the delegation will discuss the U.S. Mexico water policy.Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina has been pushing for the Mexican government to rebuild basic sewage infrastructure. The sewage runoff from the Tijuana River Valley flows into some of our local beaches, shutting them down for days and sometimes even months.Dedina said he hopes to come back to San Diego with new solutions to resolve the ongoing, decades-old issue.“Will be really pressing really hard with high-level officials to really move this forward so we can continue to have clean beaches,” he said Sunday. The leaders will wrap up their trip to Mexico on Wednesday. 2016

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — At least three large sharks were spotted off the coast of Torrey Pines State Beach swimming close to surfers in the water on Thursday.California State Parks Lifeguards say they received reports of five sharks swimming about 50 feet from shore and 100 to 200 yards from Lifeguards Tower 1 at about 12 p.m. The sharks were seen specifically gliding around the Flat Rock area, located north of Black's Beach and south of Torrey Pines State Beach, according to a State Parks spokesperson.Sky10 was overhead as the sharks swam nearby surfers who were just offshore of Torrey Pines:Officials say the largest of the sharks, which may have been great white sharks, was about 10 feet in length."The sharks did not interact with any beachgoers during this time. The shark actions are considered non-aggressive and consistent with normal white shark behavior," a State Parks spokesperson said.A San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard made announcements to people in the water about the sighting. Announcements were being made in the area up to one mile south of Bathtub Rock, SDFD spokeswoman Monica Mu?oz said.Shark sighting signs would remain up in the area for 24 hours, officials said. 1198

But in February, her life changed.“It’s stressful, I guess, to be in the hospital,” said Renata.Renata was diagnosed with cancer, causing her to lose her vision and forcing her out of her regular ballet class. That’s when she turned to a class called Ballet for Me.“It’s just so fun to do,” said Renata.Ballet for Me is a tuition-waved class that is designed for kids with unique physical needs. Each student in the class gets paired up with a mentor to help guide them through each movement.“It just makes me so happy when I get to see students feel happy and free in class,” said Kerri DeNies instructor and creator of the class. This dance class helps the kids feel whole again. And all year they rehearse for their moment to shine and perform in front of a packed audience where they feel a little more joy and beam with confidence. 1213
