There are now more than 8 million positive cases of COVID-19 in the US since the beginning of the pandemic, according to Johns Hopkins University.There are more than 218,000 deaths in the country from the coronavirus.Cases are climbing around the country, as some states report numbers of daily new positive cases as large as they saw earlier this summer.Two states on Friday, Illinois and North Carolina, reported their highest daily COVID-19 positive case count ever. Several states are reporting a low number of available hospital beds in their ICUs, including Michigan and North Dakota.Across the country, there have been more than 53,000 new daily cases each day for the last week. That represents an increase of more than 55 percent in just over a month, according to CNN.Health experts worry this surge of cases could indicate a tough winter ahead. They remind people to take precautions: wash hands, wear a mask, avoid crowds, and remain socially distant from others."They sound very simple, but people are not doing that and that's why we have an uptick in cases," Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, told CBS News this week. He also shared earlier this week that his family will not be getting together for Thanksgiving to stay safe this winter. “Don't assume that because you're in your own home with your own family that you're not going to spread infection,” he said.There are more than 39.2 million positive cases of COVID-19 recorded around the world, according to Johns Hopkins. 1555

Travelers might be wise to check for flight delays before heading to the airport this week, especially if you have a flight to the Gulf Coast, Georgia or the Carolinas as Hurricane Michael disrupts air traffic. As of Tuesday evening, several commercial airports in Florida have announced closures in advance of the hurricane's landfall. Panama City Airport announced all flights for American, Delta, Southwest and United Airlines are canceled until at least Thursday morning. The airport says it anticipates a Thursday start-up, pending a post-storm assessment. Destin-Ft. Walton Beach Airport announced it will close at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday and remained closed until further notice. At Tallahassee International Airport, all commercial flights have been canceled for Wednesday with an expected resumption of 8 a.m. on Thursday. Pensacola Airport is also shutting down operations at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday until further notice. Delta said it is ferrying its fleet from the affected airports to Atlanta during the hurricane. Tim Hortons is offering up a safe alternative to trick-or-treat this year amid the coronavirus pandemic.The fast-food chain said in a press release that customers can trick-or-treat in the drive-thru this Halloween.If you wear a costume, you'll receive a free Halloween donut, the company said.The Canadian doughnut chain says the donut is covered with chocolate fondant and topped with orange sprinkles.If you don't feel like wearing a costume, you can purchase the specialty treat for 99 cents.Tim Hortons says the limited-time offer is only available at its U.S. locations. 584

Thursday marks National Coming Out Day — an LGBTQ holiday that encourages young queer people to be comfortable with their sexuality and live an open lifestyle.2018 marks the 30th anniversary of the first National Coming Out Day, first celebrated in 1988. According to the Human Rights Campaign, the day was started by gay activists Robert Eichberg and Jean O'Leary. Recognized by all 50 states, the day is celebrated each year on the anniversary of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, which took place on Oct. 11, 1987.As a psychologist, Eichberg wrote extensively on the act of "coming out" to friends, family and coworkers. in 1978, he established "The Experience," a community workshop in Los Angeles that encouraged young  LGBTQ people to live an openly gay lifestyle among friends and family.According to Eichberg, when LGBTQ people lived an open lifestyle it made their friends and family more likely to be accepting of queer lifestyles.
