STILLWATER, Okla. — At Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, officials on Monday confirmed 23 positive cases of COVID-19 at an off-campus sorority house.All of the students living in the house were placed in isolation and are prohibited from leaving the facility, the university said in a statement.“Due to the nature of this situation, the entire chapter house is in isolation or quarantine and will be prohibited from leaving the facility,” the university wrote. “One member of the sorority who lives elsewhere is among those who tested positive and will also remain in isolation.”All involved are being monitored by OSU and the Payne County Health Department. The school says contact tracing is also being conducted to further protect the community.The confirmed cases come after a video was widely circulated over the weekend, showing dozens of maskless students packed into a nightclub in the college town.“As a student, I’m frustrated as hell,” said Ryan Novozinsky, an OSU junior from Allentown, New Jersey, and the editor of the student newspaper. “These are people I have to interact with.OSU has a combination of in-person and online courses, and students, staff and faculty are required to wear masks indoors and outdoors where social distancing isn’t possible. 1283

Texas students will return to public schools in person this fall, Gov. Greg Abbott told state lawmakers Thursday morning.The state's top education officials confirmed the plans in a statement to The Texas Tribune."It will be safe for Texas public school students, teachers, and staff to return to school campuses for in-person instruction this fall. But there will also be flexibility for families with health concerns so that their children can be educated remotely if the parent so chooses," said Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath.When students return, school districts will not be required to mandate students to wear masks or test them for COVID-19 symptoms, said Frank Ward, a spokesperson for the Texas Education Agency.The TEA is expected to release additional guidance for school districts next Tuesday. Abbott has long said his intention is for students to return in-person this fall, saying this week that there will "definitely be higher safety standards in place than when they opened last year.""I will tell you that my goal is to see students back in classrooms in seats interacting personally with teachers as well as other students," he told KLBK TV in Lubbock on Monday. That could pose a financial risk to districts, which receive state funding based on student attendance. Already, many districts are planning for hybrid programs, with some students learning virtually and some learning in person, allowing them to keep class sizes small.This year, Texas used federal stimulus dollars to fund school districts through this year's mandated school closures, as long as they offered some type of remote education. But state officials have not yet said whether they will continue to fund them for students who do not show up in person in the fall.With budget deadlines approaching at the end of the month, some districts are making tentative plans without clear state guidance. Fort Bend Independent School District announced earlier this week that its elementary and middle school students will return to their classrooms with adjusted schedules in the fall.District officials are working to develop a plan for older students that combines virtual classes and classroom instruction. The Big Ten Conference, comprised of 14 universities spanning from the east coast to midwest, will only play in-conference matches this fall.In a statement released Thursday afternoon, the conference said “if the Conference is able to participate in fall sports (men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball) based on medical advice, it will move to Conference-only schedules in those sports.”The conference made it clear all summer athletic activities (practices, etc.) are voluntary. They also said any athlete who chooses not to participate in their sport at any time during the summer or 2020/2021 academic year because of COVID-19 concerns will continue to have their scholarship honored by their school and will remain in good standing with the team.
