TIANJIN, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations' chief climate change negotiator applauded China on Monday for its efforts in dealing with the challenge of climate change, saying she was impressed by the determination of the Chinese people and their government.Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC), made the remarks in China's northern city of Tianjin at a welcoming reception held by the Chinese government.A new round of UN climate talks is being held in the port city on Oct. 4-9 in preparation for the year-end Cancun summit in Mexico."Here in Tianjin, I have seen much evidence of determination," said Figueres."(I saw the) determination of the government of China to reduce their CO2 emissions per unit of GDP by up to 45 percent by 2020, (and the) determination of the people of China to turn China into the world's leader in renewable energy technology and to find a visionary balance among economic development, poverty eradication and climate protection."Figueres also praised the host city, saying, "(I saw the) determination of the government of Tianjin, China's fourth-largest city, to be a model city for the circular economy, a pilot city for low-carbon growth and an exemplary city for sustainable development.""A striking example is the Tianjin Eco-City project between Singapore and China and with significant private sector investment, which will provide eco-friendly housing for some 350,000 people," she added.More than 3,000 delegates from 177 parties and observer states and over 200 non-governmental organizations are attending the Tianjin gathering, the final one prior to the United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held in Cancun at the end of this year.Figueres concluded her speech at the reception with a Chinese proverb, "Zhong Zhi Cheng Cheng," which means "With everyone's determination, we can do anything." She also urged all the participants to make concerted efforts to reach a consensus during the climate talks.  

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday voiced its hope that the upcoming summit of the Group of 20 largest economies (G20) will help achieve positive efforts that include the efforts to strengthen the institution building, enhance market confidence around the world and accelerate the recovery of the world economy.The statement came as Li Baodong, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, was speaking at the informal meeting of the UN General Assembly on the upcoming G20 summit in Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea (ROK)."China hopes that the Seoul summit will, in the spirit of mutual benefit and win-win outcome on the basis of implementation of the outcomes of previous G20 summit, achieve the following positive results: First, strengthen the institution building of the G20, enhance market confidence around the world, and accelerate the recovery of the world economy," Li said."Second, complete the IMF's share reform before the summit and fulfill the commitments made by the G20 leaders," he said. "Third, address the imbalance in development issues, so as to provide political support to the early realization of the MDGs," the eight anti-poverty targets to be reached by 2015. IMF stands for the International Monetary Fund, a Bretton Woods institute.A one more positive results that China hopes to see at the end of the coming G20 summit is to "facilitate the achievement of a comprehensive and balanced outcome at the Doha Round and the fulfillment of the Development Round objectives," he said."China stands ready to work with all parties concerned to ensure that the G20 summit continue to develop in line with the common interests of the international community," he said.Meanwhile, the senior Chinese diplomat also voiced his support to the UN involvement in the G20 summit."China supports the initiative of the G20 to invite, as it did in the past, representatives of the United Nations to participate in the summit and its preparations," he said."China welcomes the effort of the (UN) secretary-general to gather the views and proposals of the member states and bring these inputs to the summit in Seoul," Li said."The G20 summit has played a significant and positive role in coordinating global response to the international financial crisis and in promoting the recovery of the world economy. LONDON, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Some western commentators' critical comments concerning China's burgeoning relationship with Africa are "largely misplaced," says a Financial Times editorial.Wednesday's editorial - "China's new scramble for Africa" - said Western-led development strategies, however well meaning, did not break the cycle of under-development in Africa. Chinese investments, made for sound business reasons and boosting employment and growth, offer new hope and an alternative way forward, the editorial said.The infrastructure that the Chinese are building will also have positive spin-off effects for industries outside of natural resources. Chinese traders have brought cheap consumer goods to Africa. And, as labor costs rise at home, Chinese manufacturers may look at Africa with new interest, as a base for production, the editorial said.To the Western countries that uphold the spirit of competition, there's no reason to complain about China's strengthening its relationship with Africa, the editorial said.One reason that African governments often love doing business with the Chinese is that they are much less likely to condition their investments on improvements in government, and the pragmatic attitude of the Chinese government should be appreciated, the editorial said.

MUSCAT, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- A top Chinese delegation will sign agreements on two-way investment and personnel training with Oman amid efforts to deepen the cooperation between China and the Gulf oil-rich Sultanate, Chinese ambassador to Oman Pan Weifang said Friday.Jia Qinglin, China's top political advisor, will pay a three- day good-will visit to Oman starting from Saturday. This is a visit of the highest level in 11 years in the history of bilateral relations, ambassador Pan told Xinhua ahead of the visit.The delegation will meet Omani Sultan Qabus bin Said al-Said, deputy prime minister and other ministers and sign the important agreements during the visit, he said."I am very pleased to see that the senior Chinese leader will meet with His Majesty Sultan Qabus as the friendly Omani people are celebrating the 40th National Day," Pan said. KUNMING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 people were injured and more than 7,300 houses damaged in an earthquake that jolted Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in southwest China Sunday.The earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale occurred at 8:53 a.m., hitting an area bordering the two provinces.The epicenter, with a depth of about 10 kilometers, was located at 27.1 degrees north latitude and 102.9 degrees longitude, according to the earthquake network center in Sichuan.Thirteen people were injured in the latest earthquake, and 7,354 houses were destroyed in the quake, including 122 houses being toppled, plus road cave-ins in Qiaojia County of Yunnan, according to Zhou Yingbin, deputy head of the county government.Another person was slightly injured in Ningnan County of Sichuan, local officials said, who added that nobody was reported dead or missing in the quake.
