BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares advanced to a five-month high Friday on the gains of gold producers and nonferrous metals.The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 3.13 percent, or 83.09points, to close at 2,738.74.The Shenzhen Component Index gained 3.86 percent, or 442.83 points, to end at 11,911.37.Combined turnover stood at 283.42 billion yuan (42.43 billion U.S. dollars), up from 183 billion yuan the previous trading day.Gainers outnumbered losers by 814 to 41 in Shanghai and 1,025 to 47 in Shenzhen.Most Chinese stocks proved resilient Friday after the stock markets were closed from Oct. 1 to 7 for the annual National Day holiday.Gold producers rallied Friday after international gold prices hit a record during the Chinese holiday as investors sought an alternative investment to the U.S. dollar, which slid to an eight-month low against the euro on Thursday.Zijin Mining Group, China's largest gold producer, surged by the 10- percent daily trading limit to end at 8 yuan per share. Shandong Gold Mining, a big producer of gold based in east China's Shandong Province, rose by the daily limit of 10 percent to 61.46 yuan in Shanghai.Nonferrous metals also posted widespread gains after copper rose to 8,326 U.S. dollars per metric ton on the London Metal Exchange on Wednesday, the highest level since July 2008.Jiangxi Copper Co., the country's leading copper producer, jumped 9.9percent to 34.23 yuan per share while Yunnan Copper Co. gained 9 percent to 24.52 yuan per share.Other energy and raw materials stocks also rebounded Friday because of international commodity gains during the weeklong holiday.China Shenhua Energy Co., China's biggest coal producer, climbed 9.28 percent to 25.8 yuan. BEIJING, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese trawler captain Zhan Qixiong arrived safely in Fuzhou, capital of southeast China's Fujian Province early Saturday morning by a chartered plane after he was illegally detained by Japan.Crowds gathered at the captain's home in Gangfu Village, Jinjiang City of Fujian Province while the his wife and son left for Fuzhou, the provincial capital for family reunion."I was so happy when I was told that my brother would soon return," said Zhan Yuehong, a sister of the captain. "After all these sleepless nights, I can finally have a good rest now."The sister said she is preparing a bowl of noodles with eggs for her brother, a local tradition to keep off bad spirits when a family member returns from an ordeal.Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement after the captain's return that the Chinese government expressed "strong protest" against Japan, whose detention, investigation or any form of judiciary measures for the Chinese trawler and fishermen are unlawful and invalid.China asked the Japanese side to make apology and compensation for the incident, the statement said. It also said the two sides should resolve the problems of Sino-Japanese relationship through dialogue and consultation.On Sept. 7, two Japan Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler collided in waters off China's Diaoyu Islands. On the following day, the Japan Coast Guard illegally seized the Chinese trawler and detained the trawler's captain and 14 fishermen on board, drawing strong protests from the Chinese government and people.The Japanese side freed the 14 fishermen and the boat on Sept. 15, but continued to hold the captain. A Japanese court announced on Sept. 19 the trawler captain's detention would be extended by another 10 days.China has repeatedly urged Japan to unconditionally release the Chinese captain to avoid further damaging bilateral ties, warning "strong counter measures" if Japan failed to do so.China has already halted bilateral exchanges at and above the provincial and ministerial levels. BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese farmers have begun to reap crops as autumn drew to a close, and the nation is expecting a good harvest this year, China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) said here Tuesday in a statement on its website.The forecast is based upon higher average yields and an estimate that China's planting area for autumn crops rose by 10 million Mu (about 667,000 hectares) from one year ago, said the ministry.According to figures from the MOA, a total of 386 million mu of crops had been harvested by Sept. 27, accounting for 33.3 percent of the total.In a break down of the harvest, 130 million mu of rice, or nearly 50 percent of the total rice planted, had been reaped, while 140 million mu of corn and 60.7 million mu of soybean were harvested, accounting for 28.5 percent and 46.5 percent of the total, respectively, said the MOA.The ministry also arranged for 29 million sets of farm equipment to help with the autumn harvest, it said.China's grain output reached 530.8 million tonnes in 2009, the sixth consecutive year of growth in grain yield.In the wake of a severe drought in China's southwestern regions earlier in the year, summer grain output this year stood at 123.1 million tons, down 0.3 percent from one year ago.
