FAIRFIELD, Calif. – Police officers in Northern California stepped up to help some children cool off on a hot summer day.The Fairfield Police Department says some of its officers were responding to an area apartment complex when they noticed several kids playing outside in the heat.Unfortunately, police say the youngsters weren’t able to enjoy the community’s pool because of COVID-19 restrictions.Seeing this was no way to spend a hot summer afternoon, police say they came up with a plan to use their own money to purchase dozens of water guns and buckets of water balloons for the kids.When police returned, a water fight began, and the officers got in on the fun.“The ensuing water fight left a lot of soaked uniforms and plenty of smiling faces,” wrote police.The department posted video and photos of the interaction on social media, saying that their community is stronger together.“Transparency and trust in our community with regards to how we protect and serve you is our top priority – we understand that the more we are able to open our doors to you on all levels, the more we can connect, communicate, and work together,” wrote the department. 1166

(KGTV) - Escondido firefighters engineered a makeshift sling to save a horse stuck at the bottom of a ravine Thursday.The fire department got a call about the horse stuck near Via Conejo near Lake Hodges in South Escondido about 4:30 p.m.Firefighters said the horse was on its side and could not stand due to rocks and steep terrain.A veterinarian and a San Diego Animals Services officer helped firefighters improvise a sling and bring the horse to level ground.The horse was able to walk back to its corral unharmed.No one was injured in the process of saving the animal. 609

ESPN host Jemele Hill's tweet calling President Trump a "white supremacist" earned a stinging rebuke from Trump's press secretary on Wednesday.From the White House podium, Sarah Sanders said Hill's criticism of the president was a "fireable offense by ESPN."It was a highly unusual moment -- a White House official seemingly recommending that a Trump critic be booted from a television network.Trump aides have pressured media executives about anti-Trump commentators in the past, but those complaints were made in private. FALLBROOK (CNS) - Authorities Saturday were continuing to seek a driver who was involved in a crash with another car in Fallbrook early Friday then fled, was pursued by the other car's driver and escaped when the other driver was involved in a second crash.Officers said the driver of the Mustang was in critical condition at a hospital as a result of the crash.The dangerous chain of events began shortly before 9:40 a.m. when a brown SUV, possibly a GMC Envoy, and a Ford Mustang collided on southbound South Mission Road at Stage Coach Lane, just west of Fallbrook High School, according to information from CHP Officer Mark Latulippe.The "involved vehicles began to chase each other," Latulippe said, and the two cars initially headed south, but later turned around and continued north on South Mission Road.As the cars approached the intersection with Stage Coach Lane -- the same area where the first collision occurred -- a Honda CRV was also nearing the signal, heading west on Stage Coach.The SUV made it through the intersection, but the Mustang was struck by the CRV, which was heading into the intersection with a green light, Latulippe said.Another two cars, a Toyota Tundra and a Volvo V60, were also struck by the Mustang after the impact with the CRV.The driver of the Mustang, a 19-year-old Fallbrook man, suffered "major injuries" and was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition Friday night, Latulippe said.A female passenger in the Mustang, also 19, was being treated at Sharp Memorial Hospital for injuries described as minor.Drivers and passengers in the other cars involved in the second crash had complaints of pain, but no other injuries, according to Latulippe.It is believed the car involved in the initial crash is possibly an early 2000s GMC Envoy driven my a man. Its driver continued north on South Mission Road after the collision, and was last seen near Rocky Crest Road.The intersection of South Mission Road and Stage Coach Lane was closed for about an hour-and-a-half on Friday while officers investigated. 2085

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego County’s largest ice-skating facility is closing for good.Officials with Ice-Plex Escondido announced Thursday that the facility, located on 555 N. Tulip St., is shutting down effective immediately.Since 1995, Ice-Plex was a destination for San Diegans looking for a place to ice skate or play hockey. The facility, with its two Olympic-sized ice rinks, offered classes and public ice skating sessions that ran 7 days a week.In a statement on their website, Ice-Plex officials said, “This was not an easy decision. Our hockey and skating communities have been strong partners to us throughout the years, and we have worked hard over the last few months to find an alternative way to keep the facility open. Unfortunately, that solution has not emerged.”Officials said the facility has been operating “at a substantial loss” in the past few years, and they’ve struggled to maintain the equipment and other systems needed to keep the facility running.The pandemic-related closure also affected the facility’s ability to stay afloat, and despite numerous efforts, officials could not find ways to keep the Ice-Plex open.“We close our doors with a heavy heart and would like to extend our deepest thanks to our athletes, customers, staff and volunteers, who have been responsible for creating a welcome and competitive environment at Ice-Plex.
