The Department of Homeland Security is on heightened alert, watching for any election security issues. In the last week of October, hackers targeted at least six states, attempting to get into their voter databases and election security systems, according to the Boston Globe. Some states reported they had to block more than 50,000 log-in attempts that came from foreign countries.“The worst-case scenario is somehow a system is slowed down or brought down, or perhaps there’s some problems on election day, where voters have to wait longer,” says John Fortier, with the Bipartisan Policy Center. “But there are backup procedures and there are ways of recovering from this.”On Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security reassured voters that their ballots are safe.“We have no indication of compromise of our nation’s election infrastructure that would prevent voting, change vote counts, or disrupt the ability to tally votes,” said their statement in part.“At this stage in the election, we’re not expecting it, certainly not to effect votes, and secondly there are lots of procedures to recover from this,” Fortier explains. “If there is a problem, there is a backup, both for voters and election administrators.”For now, the bigger concern has become misinformation online, including attempts to cause chaos and manipulate public opinion.Read the joint statement released by the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice in its entirety below:“Our agencies have been working in unprecedented ways to combat influence efforts and to support state and local officials in securing our elections, including efforts to harden election infrastructure against interference. Our goal is clear: ensure every vote is counted and counted correctly. At this time we have no indication of compromise of our nation’s election infrastructure that would prevent voting, change vote counts, or disrupt the ability to tally votes.”“But Americans should be aware that foreign actors – and Russia in particular – continue to try to influence public sentiment and voter perceptions through actions intended to sow discord. They can do this by spreading false information about political processes and candidates, lying about their own interference activities, disseminating propaganda on social media, and through other tactics. The American public can mitigate these efforts by remaining informed, reporting suspicious activity, and being vigilant consumers of information, as discussed below.”“The United States will not tolerate foreign interference in our elections from Russia, China, Iran, or other nations. As noted in a joint statement on October 19, 2018, such actions are a threat to our democracy, and identifying and preventing this interference is one of our highest priorities. On September 12, President Trump signed an executive order that makes clear the U.S. government will not hesitate to defend our electoral processes or punish those who attempt to undermine them.” “Our agencies have been making preparations for nearly two years in advance of these elections and are closely engaged with officials on the ground to help them ensure the voting process is secure. Americans can rest assured that we will continue to stay focused on this mission long after polls have closed.” 3337

The Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization on Tuesday to a rapid at-home coronavirus test, the first of its kind to receive such an approval. The Lucira COVID-19 All-In-One Test Kit tests can be administered at home via nasal swab. Within 30 minutes, a test display will light up to give the patient’s results. The FDA says that those who receive a negative COVID-19 test but display symptoms should continue to quarantine as a negative test does not preclude someone from having the virus. Those ages 14 and over can self-administer the test at home. Juveniles must have the test administered by a health care professional.“The FDA continues to demonstrate its unprecedented speed in response to the pandemic. While COVID-19 diagnostic tests have been authorized for at-home collection, this is the first that can be fully self-administered and provide results at home. This new testing option is an important diagnostic advancement to address the pandemic and reduce the public burden of disease transmission,” said FDA Commissioner Stephen M. Hahn, M.D. “Today’s action underscores the FDA’s ongoing commitment to expand access to COVID-19 testing.”Previously, the only at-home tests for the coronavirus required samples to be sent to a lab, which meant the time to get results was significantly delayed. 1342
The Daily Mail released leaked footage of the fatal Memorial Day arrest of George Floyd, who died while in the custody of Minneapolis Police. The Daily Mail did not indicate how it received the leaked body worn camera videos of the arrest. Prosecutors told CNN they are working to find the source of the leak. Several media outlets have sued prosecutors in order to gain access to the body-worn camera footage from the officers."The prosecution team is not the source of the leak. We will continue to take the strictest precautions to ensure a fair trial," Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said. The Daily Mail said the footage was taken from the body cameras of Thomas Lane and Alex Kueng. Lane and Kueng along with Derek Chauvin and Tou Thao were fired as officers and criminally charged for Floyd’s death. Chauvin is facing the most serious charges, which include second-degree murder. The other three former officers are being charged with aiding and abetting a second degree murder. Chauvin was the officer that held a knee to Floyd’s neck for several minutes, leading to his death. The footage shows officers pointing weapons at Floyd in order to get him to exit his vehicle and put up his hands. The video then shows Floyd pleading with officers not to shoot him.“I'm not going to shoot you,” Lane says. The footage showed Floyd in an apparent struggle with officers as officers repeatedly asked Floyd to sit.As Chauvin laid on Floyd’s neck, Floyd could be heard telling officers, “Tell my kids I love them. I'm dead.”To view the full video, click here. 1572
The flower fields have been around for 50 years. The Flower Fields are owned and operated by the Ecke Family, the onsite grower and floral sales is handled by Mellano and Company. They share their passion for beauty and expertise inthe flower business, with a combined experience of 100 years. The Flowers Fields are known all over the world. There is no other place like it with over 50 acres of ranunculus flowers in 13 different colors. The flowers are delicate, its seed is tiny, paper thin, and smaller than an oat flake. The seed has to be mixed with water and sand, then it is placed in a cooler for two weeks to trick the seed into thinking it had a winter. Ranunculus do best in temperate climate. Morning fog, cool mornings, and temperatures in the 50s and 60s help the flower production. The flower fields are ecofriendly, they use a drip irrigation system. It places water exactly where the seed is, using the water needed and not more than that.Extreme temperatures can be costly and one of the biggest threats to the crop. Winter warm ups are less than ideal but too much rain is also bad. The team at the Flower Fields has learned to tackle the weather, but every year presents new challenges. This year they are expecting the best season yet, you can visit the Flower Fields through Mother’s Day weekend. Next year expect a new color to be added to the already beautiful fields. 1402
