CAIRO, July 5 (Xinhua) -- A seminar aimed at improving the levels of trade between Egypt and China was held in Cairo late Monday.The two-hour forum was attended by about 60 officials and representatives from both Egyptian and Chinese companies. Cao Jiachang, commercial counselor at the Chinese embassy to Egypt and Mohamed Shafeek, chairman of Egypt's General Authority for Imports and Exports Control, joined the discussion.The forum discussed the pre-shipment inspection of Egypt's imported industrial products from China and other topics such as the improvement of trade structure between the two countries.In February 2009, China's top quality watchdog and Egypt's Ministry of Trade and Industry signed a memorandum of understanding for pre-shipment inspection of Chinese industrial products exported to Egypt.Trade and economic cooperation between China and Egypt have seen rapid development in recent years. In 2009, bilateral trade volume reached 5.86 billion U.S. dollars.

BEIJING, July 22 (Xinhua) -- China and Japan will on July 27 hold the first round of negotiation on the implementation of the principles of consensus concerning the East China Sea issue.The decision came after a meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and his Japanese counterpart, Okada Katsuya, on the sidelines of the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in Hanoi, according to Foreign Ministry press release Thursday.The decision was reached after consultations between the two nations' relevant departments, foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in the release.According to Qin, the two countries' foreign ministers expressed their satisfaction about the state of China-Japan relations in their meeting.

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) - Temperatures as high as 41 degrees Celsius continued to grill south China this week, but local Chinese are popping up with cool ways to cope with the heat.Every morning this summer, thousands of residents in the eastern Chinese city of Hanzhou rush to air-raid shelters, not to escape air attacks, but summer heat.In the capital of Zhejiang Province, many city dwellers have found their summer resorts in the city' s nine bomb shelters, which were dug beneath hummocks in the 1960s to defend against "American imperialist invaders" .In one shelter in southern Hanzhou, elders are watching swordsman TV opera or playing mahjong, while children play hide-and-seek in the labyrinth-like place.Temperatures inside the shelter were 22 degrees Celsius, compared to 38 degrees Celsius outdoors, according to a LED screen above one entrance."We old folks don' t like to be cooped up in air-conditioned rooms," said Ye Chulin, a local retiree. "Here the air is fresher and we can associate with many friends."The shelters, with benches, LCD TVs, and other newly installed comforts, were opened to the public free of charge and have apparently seen more visitors than back in the Cold War years.In fact, more than 3,000 residents frequent the shelters to find relief from the summer heat every day, said Cheng Zhiguo, an official with the municipal civil air defense administration.A resident surnamed Xu told Xinhua that spending his leisure time in the shelter could save him ten yuan (1.5 U.S. dollars) in air-conditioning costs per day."And this is not just about saving money, but it is also more environmentally friendly," added Xu.In the neighboring province of Jiangxi, residents are swarming into free, air-conditioned libraries to stay cool, and to learn!In the Jiangxi Provincial Library, chairs in all reading rooms are fully occupied. BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- The Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Monday approved an education reform plan for the next decade, which aims for greater education investment and fairer distribution of resources.Presided over by the CPC Central Committee General Secretary Hu Jintao,a meeting of the Politburo approved the final version of the Medium- and Long-term National Educational Reform and Development Plan (2010-2020).The Politburo, the CPC's top decision-making body, said in a statement that education was the fundamental cause for the revitalization of China and social progress in the future.China had established the largest education system in the world since the founding of the People's Republic, which ensured education rights for millions of people, the statement said.The government promote educational fairness as a basic policy and increase education investment in rural, remote and ethnic minority areas, the Politburo agreed.According to the plan, government investment will increase steadily to support the education sector, with the ratio of education expenditure in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) to be 4 percent by 2012.In 2008, the ratio stood at 3.48 percent, compared with the average international level of 4.5 percent.The plan, released at the end of February for public scrutiny, was seen as setting the tone for the development of the education sector in China, which has long suffered from funding shortages and unbalanced development in rural and urban areas.The plan said giving students fairer access to quality education would be a "fundamental policy," with more public education resources for rural, impoverished and ethnic areas.The reforms would also encourage private organizations and individuals to play a greater role in the education system, said the statement.The plan took one year and nine months to draw up, during which public submissions were invited on two separate occasions.
