More than 30 states are reporting increases in opioid related overdoses and those from other drugs during the pandemic, particularly involving fentanyl, according to the American Medical Association.The government has taken steps to curb deaths during the pandemic by allowing for more flexibility in prescribing medications for opioid use disorder and lifting other restrictions on pain medications.Meanwhile, the National Safety Council is calling on businesses to get ready for an increase in substance misuse in the workplace.“Employers not only have a responsibility, they have a call to arms here to make sure as they bring employees back to work, that they are directly addressing their mental health and providing them the resources that they need to be able to navigate,” said Lorraine Martin, President of the National Safety Council. “It’s just as important as the PPE and sanitization for hygiene that we will all need to have when we come back to work.”Martin recognizes mental health and substance misuse are often interconnected.Now, with the additional stress and unrest related to George Floyd’s death on top of COVID-19, people may be self-medicating even more.The National Safety Council put out resources and tools to help businesses help struggling employees, but they believe the most important thing leaders can do is talk about it.“The most mature companies are addressing this head on,” said Martin. “We know that substance misuse is a disease, not a decision, and if you can come at it with that attitude and make sure you create that safe space for your employees, that can make all the difference.”Not addressing substance misuse is a serious threat to worker safety and costs a lot of money in terms of productivity, absenteeism and workers compensation claims.On the other hand, employees that work through these issues with their employer often come out on the other side more loyal and productive. 1937

More than 300 medical professionals boarded a U.S. Air Force aircraft and went to Orlando ahead of Hurricane Irma to provide help in the State of Florida.It took three C-17s to get them there, flying out of Joint Base Charleston in South Carolina and Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, according to WFTV in Orlando. MILWAUKEE — Protesters marched the 38 miles between Kenosha, Wisconsin, and Milwaukee on Tuesday to call for justice for Jacob Blake and encourage early voting.The Jacob Blake “Rally for Justice” began just after midnight in Kenosha, and the marchers wound its way through the streets of southeastern Wisconsin more than 30 miles to downtown Milwaukee nearly 18 hours later.Organizers hope the energy from the march will carry voters to the ballot boxes this month, as early voting gets underway in Wisconsin.Tanya McClean, the executive director of Leaders of Kenosha, led the group on the march.“We’re going to continue fighting for Jacob and all the families that have lost love ones to police brutality,” McClean said.Jacob Blake’s uncle says the support for his nephew is appreciated.“These people walked 38 miles baby, that’s commitment for justice for little Jake,” Justin Blake said.Justin Blake also demanded that Kenosha Police Officer Rusten Sheskey be fired, indicted, and convicted. Sheskey shot Jacob Blake seven times in the back in August, leaving him paralyzed.Justin Blake said the family would ask local elected officials to make a pledge against systemic racism.“We’re going to ask you to sign a document to tell us where you stand on the shooting that you saw and the whole world saw. So that people can vote consciously about where you stand on systemic racism” Justin Blake said.Justin Blake says his nephew remains paralyzed from the waist down in an Illinois rehabilitation center, working on his upper body strength.The investigation into the shooting has been handed over to an independent consultant. MURRIETA, Calif. (KGTV) – Cal Fire is working to knock down a large fire near Murrieta with a rapid rate of spread Wednesday afternoon. According to Cal Fire, the blaze dubbed the Tenaja Fire started around 4 p.m. near Tenaja Road and Clinton Keith Road. The Riverside County Fire Department reports that the fire is burning in an area with heavy fuels with a rapid rate of spread. As of 7:45 p.m. Wednesday night, Cal Fire said the blaze had so far scorched 250 acres and is 5 percent contained. MIRAMAR, Calif. (KGTV) - Marine Corps Air Station Miramar unleashed the potential of their renewable energy powered grid Tuesday to support San Diego during a heat wave."We've reached a point where we really need to take action to conserve," Jessica Packard, Communications Manager at SDG&E, said. The California Independent System Operator issued a Flex Alert spanning Sunday through Wednesday, which forced SDG&E to begin hour long rotating black outs across the county.Mick Wasco, Installation Energy Manager at MCAS Miramar, said they have a great relationship with SDG&E and heard over the weekend the power grid was at maximum capacity.Wasco said they took action, "although not entirely ready we did whatever we could to get our system online and help support as soon as possible."Wasco said the base has been working on a microgrid for more than a decade. It is powered by three sources: solar, landfill gas in partnership with Fortistar, and a power plant that uses natural gas and diesel, created in partnership with Schneider Electric and Black and Veatch.Wasco said the power plant works smarter, "these are not backup generators, these are generators with the best equipment possible to clean the emissions."The system succeeded Tuesday, eliminating six megawatts of usage from San Diego's grid. That saved about 2,000 homes from going dark."I don't know that everybody knows what we're capable of doing at Miramar and I think the goal is over the next couple years is to demonstrate that," Wasco said.The system has won multiple awards, including the 2019 Secretary of Defense Environmental Award for Sustainability and the Environmental Protection Agency's National Award for Energy in 2015."I think this is only the beginning and we can greatly improve our abilities in the coming years," Wasco said he wants to continue working with businesses and the community to utilize the system the most efficient and beneficial way possible.The system was initially needed to power the base during a disaster. The Navy calls for bases to be able to power themselves for two weeks. MCAS Miramar can power themselves without extra supplies for three weeks.Wasco said if they did get supplies, like diesel, they could potentially power themselves indefinitely. 2280
