Facebook announced Wednesday it is imposing stricter disclosure and transparency standards on political ads in the United States after, the social networking platform said, it caught some advertisers trying to game the system by misleading users about who was funding the ads.But the tighter rules still leave some holes that could be easily exploited.Under the new system there are two ways for groups or individuals to verify their identity: A stricter method under which advertisers Facebook has verified will receive a special "Confirmed Organization" label on their ads, and a second method indicating less confidence in the advertiser's identity. To obtain a "Confirmed Organization" label, advertisers will need to provide a US address, phone number, business email, business website and one of the following: a tax-registered organization identification number, a government website domain that matches an email ending in .gov or .mil, or a Federal Election Commission identification number.Advertisers who don't have or don't want to submit such credentials will be able to alternatively submit some basic information about their organization like addresses, emails and website, or rely solely on the page administrator's legal name, though the organization will be ineligible to use a registered organization name in their disclaimers or to receive a "Confirmed Organization" label. The new policies are aimed at curbing political advertisers' attempts to mask their identities or impersonate others. In some cases, Facebook told CNN Business, it saw advertisers identifying themselves merely as "concerned citizen" instead of using their organization's name or registered ID.Last year, Vice News 1717

Could the switch to streaming TV be finally slowing down?Millions of cable customers have been cutting the cord the past 5 years. But with many streaming services raising prices in 2019, going cable-free may not mean lower monthly fees. With the average cable bill now more than 0 a month (and bills including home phone and internet approaching 0), many are curious about Apple's upcoming TV service, just announced this week.It is expected to provide 25 streaming channels for between to a month (though Apple was curiously silent on pricing during its rollout this week).HBO is also unveiling a streaming service for a month.Add in Sling TV, Sony's Playstation VUE, and Hulu Plus and Netflix, and there are plenty of options.Costs add up fastBut 778

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Four defendants accused in thousands of lawsuits over the opioid epidemic reached a settlement Monday, averting a high-profile trial that was just hours away from starting. The settlement was reached between four pharmaceutical companies -- McKesson Corp., Cardinal Health Inc, AmerisourceBergen Corp. and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. -- and two counties in Ohio, Summit and Cuyahoga counties.McKesson Corp., Cardinal Health Inc. and AmerisourceBergen Corp. will pay out a combined 5 million immediately, and Teva Pharmaceutical will pay million, officials said at a press conference Monday. The deal was struck between midnight and 1 a.m. Monday, and the case was dismissed with prejudice, US District Court Judge Dan Polster said. The defendants were supposed to appear in a Cleveland court Monday in the first federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) trial involving the opioid epidemic.MDL is similar to class-action lawsuits in the sense that both consolidate plaintiffs' pretrial proceedings, for the sake of efficiency. But unlike with class-action lawsuits, each plaintiff in an MDL case can get a different verdict or award. The plaintiffs in this MDL case -- Summit and Cuyahoga counties -- were the first among more than 2,700 plaintiff communities to head to trial.Attorneys general from four states -- North Carolina, Tennessee, Pennsylvania and Texas -- lauded Monday's settlement as "an important step" in combating the opioid epidemic."People in every corner of the country have been hurt by this crisis, and it is critical that settlement funds be distributed fairly across states, cities, and counties and used wisely to combat the crisis," the attorneys general said in a joint statement."The global resolution we are working to finalize will accomplish those goals while also ensuring that these companies change their business practices to prevent a public health crisis like this from ever happening again."Both 1972

CAYCE, S.C. — Authorities in South Carolina say a 6-year-old girl who disappeared from her front yard after school was strangled by a neighbor who then killed himself. Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher told reporters Tuesday that Faye Marie Swetlik died from asphyxiation just a few hours after she was abducted on Feb. 10. On Feb. 13, Swetlik’s body was found in the woods nearby moments before 30-year-old neighbor Coty Scott Taylor was found dead in his home.Investigators also found clues about her disappearance in Taylor's trash can. Fisher said that investigators determined Swetlik’s death didn’t occur at the location where her body was discovered and her body had only been at that location for a short time, 738
