BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- On the last trading day of 2010, the Chinese currency, the yuan, strengthened to a record high for a second consecutive day, at 6.6227 per U.S. dollar, after 11 consecutive days of gains.The central parity rate of the currency, also known as the renminbi (RMB), was set two basis points stronger than Thursday's 6.6229, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trading system.China's central bank announced on June 19 it would further reform the formation mechanism of the yuan exchange rate to improve its flexibility.

BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- China National Offshore Oil Company Limited (CNOOC) said Sunday Bridas Corporation, a joint-venture equally-owned by CNOOC International Limited and Argentina-based Bridas Energy Holdings (BEH), will acquire a 60 percent equity interest in Pan American Energy (PAE) from BP for approximately 7.06 billion U.S. dollars.The acquisition excludes PAE's assets in Bolivia, according to a statement on the website of CNOOC, China's largest offshore oil and gas producer.CNOOC International, a wholly owned subsidiary of the company, and BEH have agreed to contribute about 4.94 billion U.S. dollars to Bridas to finance 70 percent of the proposed acquisition. The contribution will be made in equal amounts of approximately 2.47 billion U.S. dollars by CNOOC International and BEH.The remaining 30 percent, or approximately 2.12 billion U.S. dollars, will be satisfied by third party loans to be arranged by Bridas and additional contributions from CNOOC International and BEH.Completion of the acquisition is conditional on, among others factors, all necessary government and regulatory approvals, and is expected to take place in the first half of 2011.In the first half of 2010, CNOOC International and BEH completed the formation of a half-half joint venture in Bridas.

MADRID, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Li Keqiang's visit to Spain will vigorously boost the development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Spain, and turn a new chapter of bilateral trade and economic cooperation, a Chinese official said here on Wednesday.Gao Hucheng, China's international trade representative and vice minister of commerce, told reporters in Madrid that Li's ongoing Europe tour is the first foreign trip by Chinese leaders in 2011 and the choice of Spain as the first leg demonstrates the importance that China has attached to its ties with Spain and its strong will to promote cooperation with Spain.Li arrived here Tuesday for a three-day official visit to Spain. WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Friday rejected a zero-sum formula on U.S.-China relationship, saying that the two countries have much more to gain from cooperation than from conflict.Delivering a speech on the future relations between the U.S. and China at the State Department, Clinton said it does not make sense to apply zero-sum 19th-century theories of how major powers interact in the 21st century."We reject those views," she said, referring to views which depict China's growth as a "threat" or U.S. policy on China as " containment."The State Department described the speech, delivered to inaugurate an annual forum dedicated to veteran U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke, as setting stage for a state visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao next week.Clinton said that the world is moving through uncharted territory and needs new ways of understanding the shifting dynamics of the international landscape, a landscape marked by emerging centers of influence, but also by nontraditional, even non-state actors and the unprecedented challenges and opportunities created by globalization.This is a fact that is especially applicable to the U.S.-China relationship, she said, noting that the engagement between the two countries can only be understood in the context of this new and more complicated landscape."We are in the same boat.
